Donkey Kong Country Returns - Review and Cheats

Updated on March 22, 2011

Donkey Kong Country is back!

Donkey Kong Country Returns is the first Donkey Kong Country video game to make an appearance on the Nintendo Wii console. It's one of the more innovative games on a system that is already known for its innovative control system.

Gameplay: Donkey Kong Country was originally a side-scroller in 2D. Donkey Kong Country Returns recognizes those roots and has many levels that are side scrollers, but it also shows off the abilities of the Nintendo Wii system with some levels that are fully in 3D with some amazing special effects. Some levels even appear in silhouette. It really is a original gaming experience. Everything you remember from the original franchise is still there, but there's also a new stuff that shows off what the Wii can do.

Multiplayer: Donkey Kong Country Returns features a two-player co-op mode that will have one person playing as Donkey Kong and the other playing as his little sidekick, Diddy Kong. The co-op mode is executed extremely well and is really great if you have a friend who would rather play than watch.

Graphics: Like most other games on the Wii system, Donkey Kong Country Returns cannot compare to the top games being sold on the Xbox 360 and PS3. That's alright, but the Wii isn't about graphics, it's about gameplay and fun. I can say that Donkey Kong has never looked better. You'll get to see him as you saw him in the retro games, but also in full 3D with awesome explosions. The graphics are smooth and not choppy at all, and when you're playing you won't notice at all that it the grass in this game doesn't look as good as the grass in Call of Duty Black Ops.

Overall review: 8.0 out of 10. If I were a child I'd probably rate this game a 9.0 or 9.5 out of 10, but I'm an adult and this game is great but perhaps not as great as some of the more adult (read: violent) video games available on other systems. The co-op is fun but it's not enough to make it a true party game, which is what I really enjoy about some of the other Wii games in my collection, such as Mario Kart.

Donkey Kong Country Returns Cheats: When your Wiimote has a low battery, resume a saved game. Cranky will warn you that your battery is low, and he'll kindly give you 3 extra lives.

When you are collecting your prize from the barrel at the end of a level hold your controller vertically and make a punching motion. You should get extra hits and extra rewards.
