Neverwinter is an MMORPG that was originally a PC only title. It was released on Xbox One as a free to play digital download title on March 31, 2015.

Starting is simple, there is no sign up required, it simply associates your Xbox Live account and uses it as login credentials. No landing page or login screen to slow you down from playing the game.

Creating Your Hero

Before getting a chance to create your first hero, you are introduced with an impressive CG cinematic detailing a siege on the city of Neverwinter by an undead horde.

The game allows you to choose male or female for all the races. There are 8 races to choose from:

  • Human
  • Half-Orc
  • Wood Elf
  • Sun Elf
  • Dwarf
  • Halfling
  • Half-Elf
  • Tiefling

There are 7 classes to choose from:

  • Trickster Rogue
  • Devoted Cleric
  • Control Wizard
  • Hunter Ranger
  • Scourge Warlock
  • Great Weapon Fighter
  • Guardian Fighter

Each race and class has unique passive abilities as well as class specific weapons, armor and abilities. A class' primary ability is what determines their effectiveness. A Devoted Cleric, for example, uses Wisdom as their primary ability.

Determining Ability Scores is ruled in traditional Dungeons & Dragons system involving rolled scores that can be rerolled as desired. A racial ability bonus is then selected from two options.

Customize Appearance

Appearance is everything in any MMORPG. Being able to stand out and look unique is important to a lot of people that play MMORPGs. Neverwinter provides us with an impressive selection of appearance options including; head and skin color, hair and hair color, eyes and eye color, eyebrows, tattoos and tattoo color, scars, face scaling, body shape and body scaling.

After customizing your character, you are presented with Deity and Background options before selecting a name.

The graphics in Neverwinter aren't too remarkable, but they aren't monumentally grotesque. The game looks better on PC and run at a much better frame rate.

The UI is very user friendly and easy to tolerate after a short time playing. The introductory tutorial does a very good job of making the player understand what is what.

Animations are comparable to the graphics in terms of excellence. They aren't going to make you cringe but it's not going to blow you away like a God of War game.

The dialogue in this game is simply atrocious. It feels as if the voice actors were instructed to intentionally provide zero emotion in their lines.

  • Impressive character customization
  • Impressive selection of races and classes
  • Meaty and gratifying combat
