Eve Online: Anti-gank Barge fits

Saarith has been playing Eve Online since 2004 and has touched upon most aspects of the game.

Why a Special Anti-gank Barge fit?

Ganking miners is a common pastime of such entities as CODE and Goonswarm. While being a perfectly acceptable gameplay in Eve Online it can cause some emotional stress to the otherwise relaxed gaming style of the common miner.

It is important to remember that high sec ganking of miners can never be completely eradicated unless CCP intervenes directly by changing the game rules. There are however ways to reduce this by clever play-style and proper fitting of the mining vessel.

High sec ganking is mostly a numbers game, if you have a stronger tank and are more aware of your surroundings than the next player, you are less likely to become prey to the gankers and that "next" player gets ganked instead. Reason being that it takes more effort to gank a stronger tank with more ISK lost in the attempt. As a general principle a ships EHP (effective hit points) is the most important factor when tanking against high sec ganking attempts. You are simply trying to survive until Concord gets there and a regenerating tank just doesn't have the time to be effective.

Bear in mind that should you annoy someone enough there is no tanking fit in the game that can protect you perfectly. Remember that gankers can gank entire freighters in 1.0 sec systems, so what chances does a small barge have in comparison.

The best mining ship to fly for tanking purposes is the Skiff, followed by the Procurer, after that comes the Mackinaw and then Retriever, however I strongly urge you to use the SKiff or Procurer as they have a much greater tankability while still having decent mining yields. The fits I give are a mixture of tanking ability and mining efficiency. The Skiff and Procurer get much higher EHP for almost no difference in mining efficiency. The Mackinaw and Retriever have a much better ore hold to compensate. The Covetor and Hulk have the best ore yield per hour but rubbish tanking ability and should be avoided in high sec.

With max skills, Tech 2 mods and Tech 1 rigs this setup gives EHP of 86.6k and mines 2.9K m3 every cycle. You can increase the tank at the expense of mining rate by swapping out the mining laser upgrades for armor membranes and vice versa, although by having an EHP of 86k that's hardly needed.

With max skills and Tech 2 mods this setup gives EHP of 47.8k and mines 2.9k m3 every cycle. As with the Skiff you can increase the tank at the expense of mining rate by swapping out the mining laser upgrades for armor membranes and vice versa.

With max skills and Tech 2 mods this setup gives EHP of 16.1k and mines 2.9 K m3 every cycle. Like before you can increase the tank at the expense of mining rate by swapping out the mining laser upgrades for armor membranes. You should keep in mind that an EHP of 16.1K is barely enough to protect against a single destroyer ganker in the 0.5-0.7 security zones. This setup is better suited for 0.8 security and above.

Other Ways to Avoid Ganking

There are also other things you can do to reduce the chance of getting ganked. Following these four tips will reduce your ganking chances regardless of what fitting you have on your mining ship.

First of all donot to leave your mining ship unattended in space (AFK). If you notice a few destroyers or a single battleship creeping up on you in a high sec belt it's almost certainly a gank attempt and you should try to warp back to your station.

Secondly, if you try to mine in an system with small traffic, preferably a dead end system which is far from a trade hub, you are much less likely to get ganked, As I said before, most gankers will go for the first easy kill the spot which is usually close to a trade hub. reason being that they need to get new ships and modules after each attempt which are most often conveniently located at the nearest trade hub.

Thirdly, you can add known ganking organizations to your contact lists. That way you can quickly see in the local chat channel if anyone from those groups is precent in your system.

And finally, you should try to stay away from ore anomalies as they tend to attract the gankers attention.

What's your favorite mining ship?

hull tank a retriever to 25khp, hypnosis ecm midslot, 4 ecm drones 1 light combat- might survive a 6 man cheap fit catalyst gank fleet in .7 space . you can also hull tank a proc put on afterburner/tackle/web or some 4 ecms for catalysts to protect other miners and save the day

Sure, but having named modules on your mining ship will make it a gank magnet.

The skiff can reach much higher ehp then that. Depending on your disposable isk, you can reach as high as 210k ehp and still have a strip miner 2

    working
