Gaming for A Great Cause! Extra-Life Playathon

Updated on March 4, 2012

What is Extra-Life?

Hello my fellow gamers TheBeast02 here, I have a simple request from you all that is for an amazing cause. Have you ever wanted to help a charity, but simply did not have the money to do so? Extra-Life is giving us that opportunity to help out sick children by participating in a "playathon" of sorts, where people can donate money to your cause and you show your support and dedication by logging as many hours into your favorite games on Saturday, October 15 as you possibly can. This event is a 24 hour play-till-you-drop event. Teams from around the country are signing up to create competition out of it and to see who can gather the most donations for a great cause. Some of the sponsors of this event include G4TV, Playstation Network, RIFT, and Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

The event is a yearly one. Giving everyone ample time to prepare for this digital marathon of epic proportions. As a hardcore gamer, this is an excellent opportunity. You have the ability to give back to the world, by doing something that you love to do (and would probably be doing anyway.) Platforms that are able to participate in the event are: Playstation3, Xbox 360, and PC games on STEAM. Even some phone and Facebook games count! When you register, you simply put in your gamer-tag for whatever platform you will be playing on, and it will automatically log your hours on Saturday. Viewers of your page can see how long you have been playing and donate accordingly or at their leisure. Donations can be made anytime throughout the year, but your game time will only be logged on the specified date.

Why Should I Care?

About a year and a half ago, I would have looked right over this event. But at that time my younger brother, 12 at the time, was diagnosed with Childhood Diabetes (the kind where you have to take insulin shots several times a day, and prick your finger constantly for the rest of your life). After seeing what he had to go through, almost a week at the hospital, it opened my eyes to the wonderful people who work in these hospitals and really do care about the children that they work with each and every day. Lets do what we can to support them and show them that gaming can be used for good. Just look at that donation goal as one more boss that you have to take down!

Please keep in mind, I am in no way a representative for this event. Simply a participant who though that the gaming community here at HubPages would be interested in it and I might be able to get a few more takers. Also this hub is not commercial, so I will not be making any HP or Adsense revenue off of it.

It should be a great time. I play with a group of people just about every night, so we are all going to try to log as many hours as we can. We are even doing a competition within our group, giving away a free game to the person who gets the most donations in the 24 hour period.

another great hub, and for a good cause aswell. its good to see a sponsered oppertunity for gamers to give something back to bigger picture. I've found that due to most of the things like fund collecting that are done there aren't many gaming events like this out there, and i wish i could join the cause.

a year or so back i found a charity called child's play ( who i've often thought of doing an event for at some point in time but sadly haven't had my chance yet.
