FFXIV – Newbie Fishing Guide

FFXIV does a lot of new things, compared to FFXI, it’s a totally different game that looks and plays nothing like its predecessor. I almost feel wrong calling FFXI the predecessor of FFXIV since the only thing they really have in common are being of the Final Fantasy franchise and being very similar with their races and having 3 nations.

One new thing that they have done is the class system. You have Disciples of War (Fighting classes), Disciples of the Land(Gathering Classes), and Disciples of the Hand(Crafting Classes). The class system is tied to the new armory system which I’ll explain in a different hub.

Alright, back to the main course. Fishing is totally revamped from the FFXI version. At first it seems pretty scary, especially if you played in beta versions earlier than open beta but this Guide will teach you everything you need to know to start off successfully.

First, get your gear. No I’m serious. Get it. Get the rod, Get your lugworms (Ocean Fishing), and get the cool looking fishing hat if you want. The gig is optional if you know of a place to spearfish, more on that later.

Alright, first walk up to a body of water. Any fishable body of water will cause a blue exclamation mark to appear on the top middle of your screen if you have your fishing rod equipped. This is similar to Guildleves and other gathering exclamations. When you select to fish, the console will tell you the grade of the fish in that area and gathering will begin.

First you get to choose the depth of the water. There is no explanation on what this does, It probably affects the chances of what fish/items you get depending on the depth. (As with many things FF does, The community will have to figure it out. Ill update the hub when more info comes in). And then you select to wait.

Alright. You will get one of 3 messages. No fish, Nibble or Bite. On a nibble, you will want to jig and stop the orange ball on the outer edges, 50-50 chance; however on a bite, you will want to jig and stop the orange ball as close as you can to the middle. I have not failed on a bite and stopping dead center except for the un-common “You fail, no matter what” Scenario FF likes to add sometimes. This “Fail” Scenario will also randomly spring up when fighting the fish.

Assuming you have successfully hooked the fish. This is where the “Sweet Spot” game will begin. Somewhere on that Jig meter, is the “Sweet Spot” you need to hit. The remainder bar depletes randomly for each try. Average 2 to 3 tries per fish. The orange ball moves, it is your current try. The blue ball is where you stopped last.

As a Disciple of the Land, you will live or die by these "Sweet Spot" games.
As a Disciple of the Land, you will live or die by these "Sweet Spot" games.

Here are the possible scenarios during jigging… (It sounds so wrong…)

- The fish has taken a great deal of line = you are so far off from the mark that you might as well cry.

-The fish is taking line = Compared to your last try, you’re farther away!

-You take in some line = Compared to your last try, you’re getting closer!

-You take in a great deal of line = Your so close!

-The fish has tired but you still cannot reel it in = Your like, right on the border of catching that fish, one more jig a little further in the right direction and it’s yours.

-You catch the fish! = Pretty self explanatory...

Best case scenario, your initial jig to hook your nibbling/biting fish, is also the sweet spot.

Worst case scenario, your initial jig to hook your nibbling/biting fish is wrong, or you have a “Fail” scenario and lose the fish.

If you fail fishing, you gain some fishing experience. If you succeed, you gain both fishing experience and physical level experience. In Betas earlier than Open Beta, failure resulted in only Physical Experience, Which was similar to a slap in the face for failing since you could essentially level up your character’s physical level to max level by failing constantly at fishing and still be a level 1 fisherman… HMMMMMMM.Good thing that was fixed though :P

The easier way to fish is by using the fishing gig on fishable areas. That’s all I really need to say about that. Each gathering job has a secondary tool that auto gathers at a certain area. However gathering in this fashion is either hit or miss as opposed to having a higher chance by succeeding the mini-game. EDIT: Only the stats of the currently active tool are applied.

One last thing of note, as you gain fishing levels, you will also gain fishing skills. Gulleye allows you do discern the direction of different grades of fish. Dowse is similar to Gulleye but if you are 200(edited) or more units away, you get a pretty decent speed boost. Others are dodge bonuses vs certain oceanic enemies, ability to raise the number of gathering chances while gigging(so wrong…), to hit certain items and to increase chances of rare items.

Possible fighting skills may be added later.

UPDATE: It seems the extra skill points (Gathering, Output, Scanning, Perception, ect) do play some hand in crafting and gathering, at least confirmed by Square Enix... Although they still haven't explained what does what or how powerful that stat really is.

Stay tuned for more Guides and FFXIV Updates as we near release!

That you for your comment Fuji! I wish I could confirm or deny your #2, whether biting is more for middle and nibbling is for the outsides, i haven't failed to hook a fish yet...Assuming you still need to hook the fish or it's just a step that was removed...If that's the case, not sure what's up with the nibbles and bites though. It looks like there was a lot changed over from beta(with good reason).

And your right! That "fail" scenario was removed when hooking the fish(THANK GOODNESS). Although I have gotten random "The fish got away" type messages while I still have some remainder bar...remanding?(lol). So I don't know~

Thank you very much for the comment! I've edited a sentence or two to take in the new information :D

      Probably already addressed/known but:

      1) Hooks do not affect anything. They are a component used to craft different lures and fishing rods that (for some reason) is sold by the same NPC who sells bait.

      2) I personally did not see a difference in location of "sweet spot" on the nibble or the jig.... it's usually equally random. No notable difference in success/failure rate of nibble vs bite.

      3) you keep referring to the "insta-fail" which in the Beta was when you got the nibble/bite, moved to Jig, and did not get a blue "remainder bar" and simply failed. I don't think i've seen this scenario at all since release...only the "Nothing Bites" which is not exactly a "fail" as you do not lose bait (IMO).

Only the stats of the tool you are actively using are applied when crafting or gathering stuff.

I am too. Ive been trying to search on the different community sites to see if it has any real fishing use... buuuut, the only real use it seems to have is crafting Chocobo Fly.

I'm still curious as to how the fishing hook factors into it all. There doesn't seem to be any way to use it.

I enjoyed Runes of Magic, but I find it hard to compare the two. There are just too many differences, Guildleves, Classes, Leveling, Fatigue System, Gathering, Economy, Retainers... Hell, even battles aren't even the same. FFXIV uses a stamina bar :P. Thanks for the comment though ^_^ Always happy to receive one :D.

Nice article! Got more than an adequate fix for this type of MMO thanks to Runes of Magic though, so I doubt I'll be playing this game. With that said, it sounds pretty interesting. :)
