Can we stop whining about Final Fantasy XIII?
In case you wanna try some of the games yourself.
I make it no secret that the Final Fantasy series is one of my favorite franchises. The first one I played was Final Fantasy VII, and it remains to this day my favorite game of all time, and is the game that actually first inspired me to start writing. And I will be ecstatic the day that Square Enix finally decides to bite the bullet and remake it. But a lot of people (both fans and critics alike) have argued that the series isn't what it once was, and is in danger of entering the same kind of self-destructive slump that nearly killed the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. These, eh, charming fans only got more vocal with the release of Final Fantasy XIII. And that hatred has only continued to grow. The closest thing I can compare this too is the irrational hatred that some people still have over the Star Wars prequels. , with one side hating them to the point of insanity, and the other side willing to fight to the death for it.
And I've just about had it up to my ears with it. Seriously, I'm bloody sick of it. I'm sick of the villainization of Square Enix, sick of hearing of how Lighting, Hope, and Snow ruined people's lives, sick of the idiotic comparisons of Final Fantasy to games like Skyrim and Dragon Age. I’m sick of the arguing, sick of the bitching, I'm sick of it all. Now I'm not saying that everyone has to like this game, they don't. It’s a fact of life that not everyone is going to like everything and honestly, that's fine. Diverse tastes are a good thing. But when I see people in their twenties and thirties go to war over it like five year olds, and then bully others who are in the middle to their way of thinking, it just pisses me off.
Why has this game so polarized its fan base anyway? There really isn't a right answer to that. But a part of it, I think, has to do with the general shift in taste from Japanese developed games (to which Final Fantasy belongs) to western developed ones, in North America and Europe at least. And another part of it certainly has to do with the darker side of internet culture where objective thinking is slowly but surely becoming extinct. But really, I think it boils down is one simple fact: Faced with the aforementioned shift in tastes and increasing competition in the ever expanding global economy: both Square Enix as a company and Final Fantasy as a franchise is trying to move on and stay relevant in the market place. And just like in comic book fandom, trying something new is enough for some to justify rioting in the streets.
Now look, I get it, change is a scary thing. But the sad fact of the matter is that the series is balanced on a very thin wire overlooking the abyss, and unless it moves forward, it’s going to die. No fan wants that. And the worst thing we can possibly do is try to hold it back. However, by the same token, we don't want it to go in the wild blue yonder and become unrecognizable or, God help us, become like Dragon Age. And Final Fantasy XIII is trying to find that balance. And I have no doubt that future titles will try to find it too.
So can we please stop acting like spoiled brats about it? Because in the grand scheme of things, Final Fantasy XIII isn't actually a bad of a game, it’s just not the game it could have been. And besides guys, what does it actually get you to remain bitter about it? It hasn't stopped good Final Fantasy related games from coming out or damaged the reputation of the older games. It hasn't stopped it from getting two direct sequels, the first of which was actually pretty good I might add. It hasn't stopped the development of Final Fantasy Verses XIII, or the rebuilding of Final Fantasy XIV.And it certainly hasn't stopped Square Enix from publishing great non-Final Fantasy games. And if you don't believe that, then go play the new , Tomb Raider,Neir, Dragon Quest IX, The World Ends with you,the list goes on. And if you don't like any of those then fine. But don't be a jerk about it. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
