Planning a Successful Baby Shower

What makes a party a success? Happy, satisfied guests, of course! It is important to provide the right blend of food and entertainment to have a successful party.

Start the party with an Icebreaker

There are several cute ideas to get your party started. One popular idea is to have each guest pin on a diaper pin and tell them they cannot say "baby." If they hear someone say the word "baby", they can ask for their pin. At a pre-determined ending time, the person who has the most pins is the winner. Another fun starter is to hand each entering guest a roll of ribbon and a scissor. Ask them to guess how big the mommy's belly is by cutting the ribbon. No cheating! After everyone has gathered and the party is ready to begin, you can have the girls measure their yarn on the new mommy. This is a good opportunity for the guest of honor to greet her guests. The one who is the closest wins a prize!

A Sidenote about Parties

I recently attended two different parties with two different groups of friends. The first party was one of the best parties I've ever attended. The second party was, while not the worst, certainly down in the bottom ten. The amusing thing about this is that I was looking way more forward to the second party as all my closer friends were there! So what happened? Party "A" had all the elements of a great party:

  • A good blend of people.
  • Fun and tasty food.
  • Comfortable seating.
  • Well organized, timed games.
  • Fun prizes.

Party "B" had some of the elements:

  • A good blend of people.
  • Fun and tasty food.

Good friends and good food are not always enough to make a great party! It takes well-planned activities and seating arrangements to turn your party into a success.

Baby Showers are Multi-Generational

Baby showers are generally multi-generational. They are, traditionally held during the day and more often than not, a girl thing. They bring forth images of ladies in pastels and flowers, eating pastries and appetizers. They are laced with memories of punch bowls, lemonade pitchers and sunshine. They are parties where grandmothers and young women alike, chat, laugh and "ooh and ahh" together because they are there for only one purpose: To celebrate a miracle, a joyous occasion, the birth of a baby! To make your baby shower go as smoothly as intended, make sure you are prepared and well-planned and keep in mind that the there will be people in various age groups from many different walks of life.

Do you know how to throw a great party?

Five Fun Games for Baby Showers

When planning games, more is better. Unless, you have played a game many times with the same group of people, you don't always know how it will go over or exactly how much time it will take. You also can't control how much socializing will be going on during the game playing. What you can control, is the seating, the timing and offering of games.

When choosing games, I recommend a blend of active and passive games. Here is a list, in no particular order of 5 great games, all described in detail below:

  1. Dirty Diapers
  2. Baby sketch artists
  3. The Left, Right Game
  4. Sketchy Situation
  5. Guess what's in the Diaper Bag

What's in my Diaper Bag?

These are a few of the things you can include in the game. Open the packages and add a baby bottle and pacifier.

Guess What's in the Diaper bag

Put around 10 baby items inside a diaper bag. Include things like:

  • Rattle
  • Bottle
  • Teething ring
  • Bib
  • Disposable diaper
  • Cloth diaper
  • Baby lotion
  • Diaper rash cream
  • Pacifier
  • Mp3 player
  • Toy
  • Blankie

How to play:

Supply each guest with pen and paper. Pass around the diaper bag. Give each guest one minute to feel what's inside without taking anything out or looking. After they pass it to the next person, they can write down their guesses. The one who guesses the most items in the bag correctly, wins and the new mommy gets to take the filled bag home!

How to Prepare the Dirty Diaper Baby Shower Game

Story for The Left-Right Game.

Mr. WRIGHT prepared to take Mrs. WRIGHT RIGHT to the hospital as she just went into labor. As he LEFT in the car, he turned RIGHT out of the driveway. He had to go RIGHT back home because he LEFT Mrs. WRIGHT at home. They both got in the car on the LEFT side as the RIGHT side door wouldn't open. Mr. and Mrs. WRIGHT again LEFT for the hospital, turning RIGHT out of the driveway. An argument occurred about the RIGHT turn, as Mrs. WRIGHT said that Mr. WRIGHT should have turned LEFT. Mr. WRIGHT kept insisting that he was absolutely RIGHT, but Mrs. WRIGHT kept insisting that the hospital entrance was on the LEFT. Two blocks away after another LEFT turn they discovered they had LEFT Mrs. WRIGHT’s overnight bag at home. So they made a LEFT turn, then a RIGHT to go back home to where they had LEFT the bag. As they turned RIGHT on to their street, Mrs. WRIGHT said "Let's just go RIGHT to the hospital and send someone else RIGHT to the house for the fact that we LEFT the bag on the couch". They went LEFT at the next block and turned RIGHT back around. Finally at the hospital Mr. WRIGHT pulled up to the front where he LEFT his wife to go RIGHT in. Inside the hospital they wheeled Mrs. WRIGHT away. “Where is Mrs. WRIGHT? I only LEFT her for a minute!” Exclaimed Mr. WRIGHT. A nurse rushed him RIGHT down the hall, they made a LEFT turn, then a RIGHT, and a LEFT turn again. Mr. WRIGHT, found Mrs. WRIGHT already in delivery. But he then realized that he had LEFT the video camera in the car. RIGHT away he ran out of the room and back to the car. Not only had he LEFT the camera but he had LEFT the lights on too. Mr. WRIGHT wasted no time, her ran RIGHT back to his wife’s room. As Mr. WRIGHT walked in all he heard was screams from his wife because he had LEFT her room and was nowhere in sight. I’m sure you can guess what happened next. As Mrs. WRIGHT had the baby Mr. WRIGHT passed out on the floor. But when he came to he got a shock once more. For there he saw Mrs. WRIGHT embracing their new little bundles of joy. With two babies on her LEFT and one on the Right, Mrs. WRIGHT turned to her husband and said “there is one thing LEFT to do, I think we should name these WRIGHT babies, how about you?

The Left-Right Game

This game is played for one big prize. Have your prize all wrapped up in pretty paper and ribbons. the host reads an already prepared story that includes the words "left" and "right." Guests sit in a circle with the new mommy holding the gift. Every time the words left or right are said, the gift gets passed to the person in that direction. The last person holding the gift at the end of the story gets to keep it! You can write your own personalized story but I have included an example here. Because , we will be having about 30 people, I will be circulating 3 gifts. I want to keep everyone involved. You can decide how many gifts to circulate, depending on the number of guests.

I bought a Starbucks giftcard as my gift and put it in a bigger box.

Prizes for Your Baby Shower

In addition to the usual baby shower favors that you will be sending home with each guest, you will also need to have prizes for each of the games. Because you will have several winners for a couple of the games, I recommend something nice and simple like candles or scented soaps. For the Left-Right Game, you should have something a little bigger. I made a baby memory jar for a centerpiece and "hopes, dreams, wishes jar" as a gift. Giftcards that are wrapped in bigger boxes are a great prize, suitable for all your guests! We will also be putting diaper pins at various places. The recipients can choose our table decorations and centerpieces to take home with them.

Baby Sketch Artists

This is a fun and easy game. Give each guest a paper plate and a magic marker. Have them write their name on the back of their plate. Hold up an ultrasound picture of the baby.Tell them they are going to sketch him/her on the plate. The catch? The plate will be on the top of their head!

Picking a winner can be done in one of several ways.

  • If you have a place to display them, you can lay the plates out and have guests vote for their favorite by putting small "charms" that you have provided on their favorite plate. The plate that has the most charms is the winner.
  • If you want to do it with a minimum of fuss, you can have each person hold their plate up individually. The one that receives the loudest applause, wins! Or.....
  • You can have the new mommy vote for her favorite!

In this game, you may also want to reward prizes to the: funniest, scariest, silliest, etc.

Sketchy Situation

What you will need:

  1. Large sketch pads
  2. Markers
  3. A bowl
  4. Index cards
  5. Timer
  6. Something to keep score on

Divide into teams of about 6 people. Each team gets a large sketch pad and marker. Choose the first artist from each team to come to the front. One of them picks a "situation" to draw from a big bowl. All of the artists will be drawing the same thing. The first team that guesses correctly gets a point for that round. Take turns so everyone in the team gets to be the artist at least once. The team with the most points wins the game.

You can use words that have to do with baby equipment, food, books, etc. You will want to have a list of at least 20 things.

This is when you know a Hubber is dedicated to you, when he is sixty-four years old and has no chance of ever attending a baby shower. :) Good suggestions, Randi. I hope you had a great Easter.
