Gone Home
Gone Home

Gone Home is an unusual game. You don’t fight evil or complete generic quests here. Instead, you explore a house to get to know more about a family who lives there. Some places can tell a beautiful story, and the Greenbrair’s house is one of them. There is a story behind everything you see in the house. From faded photographs, written notes, to a dent in the wall, everything uncovers more about this family. It’s when you put all these stories together, you find out how beautiful and intimate Gone Home really is.

The only shortcoming of Gone Home is that it’s not a very long game which leaves you begging for more. So it’s only fitting to look for some games like Gone Home once you are done with it. If you are looking for other epic adventure games like this one, you have landed on the right place as I have created a list of some must play games like Gone Home.

Dear Esther
Dear Esther

Dear Esther

Dear Esther is not a video game. It’s more like a 2 hour long interactive movie. If you are going to spend your 10 bucks on Dead Esther expecting it to be a traditional adventure game, you are going to be disappointed.

It doesn’t matter whether Dear Esther is considered as a video game or not (there has been a lot of debate about it); the only thing matters is what it has to offer. With a haunting tale and a lonely island to explore, Dead Esther, apparently, has a lot to offer for as little as $10.

Talking more about the story and setting is going to spoil it for you. You definitely want to boot up Dead Esther not knowing what to expect. What I can tell you right now, though, despite being a short game, the multi-layered content is good enough to support multiple playthorughs. There are hints, hidden areas and subtle references you are bound to miss in your first sitting. It’s definitely worth playing more than once. Put simply, it’s one of the best adventure games like Gone Home.

Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons
Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - One Of The Best Indie Games Like Gone Home

A dying father sends his two young sons to find a cure for his illness that can only be found in wilderness. You must guide them through the treacherous paths in a beautiful world full of challenges and mind-bending puzzles.

These puzzles require you to think out of box. While the smaller brother can squeeze through narrow gaps, the lager one’s sheer strength is can be used to do more laborious work. Sometimes, you’d have to split them up to solve a puzzle.

The beauty of environment never ceased to amaze me. Though you embark upon your journey in a village full of people, you’ll soon make your way to frozen lakes, rivers flowing with blood and battlefields. The way Brothers: A Tale of Two continues to take you from one setting to another seamlessly is quite fascinating.

The only downside is brevity. These brothers don’t communicate with each other at all during the whole journey. Don’t let it stop you from embarking upon a sweet and emotional journey.

The Stanley Parable

The Stanley Parable - One Of The Best Games like Gone Home With Multiple Endings

I just finished Stanley Parable for the 8th time. It didn’t take me long, but I indeed came across something new that I had completely missed in my previous 7 playthroughs. It’s not a very long game by any means, but It’s certainly a broad one.

Origionally launched as a free Half Life 2 mod, The Stanley Parable was released as a full-fledged adventure game on October, 2013. Apparently, it’s smarter, funnier and broader than the initial release.

The game puts you in the shoes of Stanely, a regular guy in his late 30s. He was working on his mundane job one day when his colleagues disappeared all of a sudden. So he decides to take a look around which leads him to the darkest places around his office.

You are not alone is the journey though. There is a disembodied voice narrating Stanley’s tale. When he says “Stanely gets up from the chair, you get up from chair. When he says Stanely walks through the hall, you walk through the hall. When he says Stanley takes a right turn, you…….wait. It’s around that time you realize that you can turn left is you want and take a risk of not following his version of the story. There is a sense of rebellion and satisfaction in disregarding what he says. That’s when the story starts to branch out. You can disobey him if you ant to. When you disobey him again later on, the story branches again and then again. Are you ready to face the petty consequences of not following what the narrator says?

The Stanley Parable is frequently surprising and hilarious. You’d always want to know what would have happened if you had taken another way. If you are looking for some games like Gone Home, TSP certainly ticks all the boxes in terms of what you are looking for.

Proteus - An Indie Game Like Gone Home

Proteus is an adventure explorer where you don’t have anything else to do than just walk. This is the only thing you are going to do throughout the game. There is certain beauty in the way Proteus confidently sets its own identity as an exploration game and venture way off the gaming’s usual beaten path.

Some people refuse to call it a game, but does it matter? While it’s directionless with no objectives, this is the real hook of Proteus. The lack of traditional action is actually like a breath of fresh air.

If you are looking for games like Gone Home, but with something new to offer, Proteus has a lot going for it that you’d love.

Slender: The Arrival - One Of The Best Indie Horror Games Like Gone Home

It doesn’t take long for things to go awry for her as a tall, ghostly dude starts lurking around her. You can run away all you want only for him to appear behind you all of a sudden. He is not the only one should be wary of though. There are a few nerve-wrecking surprises waiting for you later on!

Overall, Slender: The Arrival is an unnerving and chilling experience, especially with headphones on. You certainly don’t want to miss out on it.

Anna

Anna - A Home Exploration Adventure Game

Anna is a creepy little story about an amnesiac man who has been haunted by a sawmill near his house in his dreams. Intrigued and puzzled, he finally decides to pay a visit to that place. Everything is not what it looks like though. The house suddenly becomes alive as it starts uncovering his dark past and which reminds him of a relationship he had with a woman named Anna, something he had forgotten a long time ago.

You need to have your thinking cap on while playing this game. The story can be a bit confusing for some people, but as you explore more, the confusing pieces start falling into place. Depending on how deep you go with exploration, you will experience one of the 3 possible ending in Anna. The more you explore, the more enriched game’s ending is going to be.

Despite its flaws, Anna: Extended Edition is one of the best slow-burn games like Gone Home with a really dark tone and some startles.

The Path

The Path

Which path are you going to choose? One which is safe, but tantamount to failure? Or the treacherous one full of promises? The Path drops you into a similar situation and tells you not to wander away from safe route. You mustn’t do what you are told!

You start with choosing any one of the 6 sisters ranging from 9 to 19 years with a goal to reach their grandmother’s house. Like I said, you have two options. You can always go for the safer one, but when you reach grandmother’s house, the game tells you that you have failed. You’d return to the starting point with the character you chose. They tell you to stay safe, but want you to completely disregard it and take a wander in the woods.

The Path takes some time to unfold and pick up the pace, but don’t let the slow-burn experience stop you from playing one of the best adventure games like Gone Home.

Among The Sleep - Be A Toddler

If you are like me, you probably don’t even remember the time when you were 2 years old. Have you ever wondered what’s it’s like for a toddler to experience something traumatic? Among The Sleep, the first ever game from Krillbite Studios, let’s you experience the horror from a toddler’s perspective.

You play as a toddler who wakes up in the middle of the night to find his mother missing. As you crawl out of the home in the wilderness, the reality begins to unfold. You are just a kid, but bad things can happen to you. If you let these unnatural beings see you, they will defiantly put an end to everything and send you back to the start of your most recent checkpoint. You are tiny, weak and helpless, and the game makes sure that you know it by constantly throwing you into environments which loom over you.

He may be weak and powerless, but incredibly smart for a 2 year old kid. He uses chairs to unlock towering doors, knows how to sneak past monsters lurking around, and most importantly, how to complete an objective.

Among the Sleep is going to take you to some truly unsettling places where you confront your darkest childhood fears. Its unique vision of horror is truly haunting.

The only thing that goes against it is it’s a bit on the shorter side. While you may find yourself taking breaks frequently due to overwhelming scares, it can still be completed within a few hours. Nevertheless, Among the Sleep is a must play horror adventure game like Gone Home which will make it hard to sleep at nights without lights on for the next few days.

Miasmata - A Great Adventure Game

Miasmata is a game about exploration, survival and fear. If you are the type of person who loves realistic survival scenarios, you are going to love the slow-burn experience Miasmata has to offer.

While exploration is necessary for finding a cure, it can prove fatal if you are not careful. For example, dropping more than a few feet onto is a surefire way to die. Scratches

Scratches - An Adventure Game Set In A Victorian Era Mansion

Psychologists have been trying to prove for decades that there is nothing to fear from the dark. If you are not scared of the things that you can see in the light, why should you be scared when you can’t see them in dark?

This logic is certainly flawed though. What if there is someone in the dark who is just messing with you? What if doesn’t want to make his presence known to you in the light? Do you ignore your gut feelings that someone is out there or do you try to find out what’s behind those noises? Scratches, a horror game developed by Nucleosys, proves that when you try to find out more about those weird noises you were hearing in the dark, things tend to go awry.

The game puts you in shoes of Michael Arthate, a horror novelist who is looking to find an inspiration or finishing his latest piece. What else could be better than buying an old Victorian house in England? He brought one of those houses to spend some time alone over there.

Things are not quite what it seems in the first glance though. There is something strange and bizarre happening here that haunted previous owners of this house. Revealing anything else would spoil it and believe me, you don’t want that. If you are looking for some great adventure explorer games like Gone Home, exploring a sprawling Victorian mansion should be on top of your list.
