Games Like Spore - Evolution, Simulation And More

Find the very best games like Spore on this page. Want something with evolution? Creature creation? Space exploration? I've collected some games that cover all these elements and more on this page.

Spore is one of those games I find myself returning to over and over again as I want to take another species from a tiny cell organism to a large space empire (usually of the aggressive kind for myself). This adventure is something no game has really captured since unfortunately (although I'll keep crossing my fingers).

The games like Spore here provide other opportunities for you to take part in elements of the Spore series. I've tried to include options for everyone's tastes and each stage in a Spore game. I'm always on the hunt for other games to play so I welcome reader suggestions at the bottom of the page, I'd love to hear from you!

Flow

If you're on the hunt for some relaxing games like Spore that play out like the cell stage then Flow is an obvious choice. It's a simple indie game that you can play for free (online) but there is also a paid version for your PlayStation devices that does boost the mechanics and visuals. If your after a game that represents on of the other stages in Spore you'll want to skip ahead to one of the other games that I've featured below.

So what do you do in Flow? It's a simple game where you'll guide your little organism on a 2D plane as you gain in size. Everybody can make a game that simple though so what does Flow bring over other simple options. Your multi segmented worm will grow steadily and have to fight off aggressive creatures to advance. As you glide around the place you can see the other layers of the game to see exactly what awaits you as you grow in a very similar mechanic to Spore.

Most notably is the difficulty balance system that actually dynamically adjusts the difficulty for each game that you play. So what does this dynamic adjustment actually mean? In simple terms if you're being aggressive and moving quickly from one food source to the next the pacing of the game will match that and give you an intense game. If you decide to float around casually then the game will also slow itself down and provide less enemies to avoid to create something more relaxing.

Darkspore

If you're the kind of gamer that liked the customisation and creature editing elements of Spore but also want it combined with some action gameplay then Darkspore is is going to the option of choice on this games like Spore page here. As someone who loved making wacky combinations in Spore, the action RPG genre (Diablo) and science fiction settings the game was almost my ideal game.

Released just a few years after Spore in 2011 the game also has multiplayer that comes with various forms (PvP or co-operative), which is another element that really pulled me in. In terms of plot your goal is to rid the universe of the mutations known as Darkspore that have been created through genetic manipulation. These creatures are now weapons in a battle for the fate of the galaxy and it's up to in order to build a a squad of powerful creatures.

These hero creatures slowly evolve and change up your squad during the adventure so the game stays fresh from start to end in my opinion. The game isn't as popular as I make it out to be here though there are a few issues holding it back from other reviewer perspectives but I encourage you to look beyond those because you'll be missing out on something great.

Thrive

Thrive is one of the games like Spore that is still in the works and plenty of distance to go before completion. It's an open source project so it's a game that will probably take some time to reach a final stage of completion but I do feel very much like it will be worth the wait in the end.

The game takes a lot of obvious inspiration from Spore and eventually aims to include all of the same mechanics that EA's hit game did. As someone who fell in love with what Spore had to offer it's a very attractive promise and one that I hope it can live up to in the future.

Thrive does want to take a sidestep though by bringing the game more in line with the scientific merits that the game was originally meant to be based on to hopefully create something more realistic and less "cartoon like". This mostly likely will mean that the demographic for the game will be bumped up a few years as it attracts more intelligent gamers as a following looking for something that reflects our own real world.

Thrive will start you off in a microbe stage where you'll be controlling your single cell organism and struggling to survive as you collect the necessary nutrients to grow into something more complex. With the auto-evolution system you'll be guided with dynamic evolution. From these humble beginnings you'll go through a civilization, social mode and more which eventually leads you into space.

A lot of the game is still up in the air but everything looks like it will end up as an impressive game.

Species

Before reading on I do have to preface this overview of Species, it is not the next Spore or even a game like Spore but it does cover the evolution process which I really enjoyed to watch and influence. Think of it as an evolution simulator with a huge amount of options rather than an actual game.

The game is actually titled Species: Artificial Life, Real Evolution and is still pretty deep into its alpha phase but still gave me lots of gameplay hours out of it. You'll get to watch natural selection at it's best as you watch little species evolve and take over the landscape in front of you. You get to pod and poke this world to alter the results with options to grant favour on certain species by delivering them food sources and more.

As someone who has a scientific mind and likes to watch evolution happen the simulation game will offer exactly what you are after.

X3 Series

If your hunt is focused on games like Spore space stage then I'd have to throw the X3 series at you. It's all about space combat and trading and has over half a dozen games under its belt that started back in 1999. These days you aren't just getting a great game but also some superb graphics which you can see an example of below.

In the game you are free to roam around the world as you please as you do as you please. This free roam gameplay is very popular in other game genres and now the X3 series brings it into a sci-fi space setting. Battle other ships in fast paced battles, complete missions, build up an empire, trade and so much more in an entire galaxy of content.

With an entire universe in front of you and the freedom to take control of your character as you please it's just as deep as what the Spore space stage is.

except for thrive when its finished, there are no games that are actually like spore. i mean if it has multiple stages (creature, tribal, etc) and a creature creation system, only then will it be like spore.

Evolution II: Fighting for Survival is another evolution themed game coming out soon on PC and XBox Live Indie Games. All the species follow the rules of evolution (eat, grow, reproduce with random mutations) in the game.

Thanks for the comment, I actually really like Darkspore and didn't have too much issue at looking past the issues it had.

X-Rebirth was awful though but looking at the entire franchise it holds up quite well. I wish we'd get the Spore that we should have gotten for sure, but with EA's history that won't ever happen.

Darkspore was considered a huge flop, and it was buggy to no end.

X-Rebirth was considered to be even worse.

Unfortunately, Spore is the best game among these, and that's not saying much since it didn't live up to the promises that gamers were given. It was still a fun little game though.
