Good Hobbies for Kids

Updated on May 25, 2011

Character Building Hobbies for Children

A hobby you develop as a child has a profound impact on your life even as an adult. Hobbies can be the first teachers for many of life's lessons. If you are collecting something as a hobby, it may be coins, stamps or whatever else interests you, you learn many things along the way.

You learn to see where new stock is available. Then you learn to bargain for a good price that fits in with your meager resources. You learn to trade duplicates by negotiating well for them. A number of skills which will come in handy if you should choose to make a career in the corporate world.

So what are the most beneficial hobbies for kids?

Reading

The book is capable of improving the child's vocabulary, general knowledge and overall awareness of the world. Many studies have established that readers do better than non readers in school work and exams.

Arts and Crafts

Drawing, sketching and painting are great for a child to explore his creativity. The blank page can be an inspiration for many a creative genius. Woodwork and crafts are also a great way for teaching kids the importance of using your own hands to create something from nothing.

Collections

Be it stamps, coins, baseball cards, model cars, ships, action figures, dolls, or what ever else interests your child, a collection is a great way to learn about people and places. Important events and even all the social skills I mentioned earlier.

Music

This may not be ideal for all kids as some people are naturally more musical than others. Yet if you kid enjoys singing or dancing, they can become great hobbies. Even learning a musical instrument is an option. This is also a good way to reinforce the discipline and commitment needed to complete the hobby.

Sports and Games

Outdoor sports and indoor games are equally good for the complete development of a child's personality. While speed, skill and teamwork are needed in one set, alertness, intelligence and quick thinking are practised with the other. A good hobby for any kid.

I suppose it is, given that it fosters hard work and team spirit, we don't have it in our schools in India though.

A very useful hub. I personally think reading is a great hobby and it should be nurtured from childhood. Believing in this thought has made me write a hub titled: Book Reading- A Hobby to Cherish.

My children enjoy reading. They take a lot of their free time reading and painting. They also enjoy listening to stories. Here in the local library we have a story teller once a week, that is a real treat for my little ones!

Thanks Ratna. These days with the schools taking up so much of the kids time, hobbies get delegated to summer holidays.

The Great Hub for bringing up our children. They all indeed need these kind of hobbies to get interest in their school life.

when i was young i was into reading. it is a hobby my kids got into also. but because school activities and assignments are demanding much of their time, the reading time was reduced.

One of the best I think is coin/stamp collection. They will learn a lot of history behind the item and history of their country. Great Hub.

Great ideas,. My hobbies were music and art. I managed to turn both into a career. BTW, music for kids is a great idea. They don't really have to have a great talent to play an instument. Most kids can learn to play pretty well. Same with singing and dancing. I was a music teacher, and I know that there were some pretty good performers among those who thought they wouldn't be good at it. A lot of people are more musical than they realize. Besides, if it's only going to be a hobby, who cares how much talent you have.
