"Grand Theft Auto" Movie Candidates

Updated on November 20, 2011

Grand Theft Auto, the game that made in-game carjacking a famous pastime for people everywhere, is an open world, multi-award winning video game series, set in fictional locations that are often modeled after American cities.

It was rumored in April of 2007 via Variety Video Game Blog that a Grand Theft Auto movie was on the brink of approval with one of six major movie studios. The movie never came to fruition, and it’s likely that the rumors were false or misleading, but being a GTA fan, attentively awaiting the release of GTA V, the thought intrigued me. If a Grand Theft Auto movie was made, who would take on the lead acting role? And, who would be the antagonist in such a movie? I compiled a list of actors, who would be worthy of such a role. Who would make the ultimate Grand Theft Auto character, in a GTA inspired movie? You decide by participating in the poll!

Who would make the ultimate Grand Theft Auto character, in a GTA inspired movie?

The "Lead Role" Candidates

My criteria for selecting these "possible" lead characters, was that each one had to be recognizable enough to fit in with the fast paced scenario of underground street crime, that involved unlawfully nabbing cars, robbing banks, the police chases that would follow, and doing business with mobsters. And yet, still be likeable enough to play the robin-hoodesque good guy.

GTA Worthy Films
Vin Diesel
The Fast & The Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift , Fast & Furious, Fast Five
He played Dominic Toretto in the series of Fast & Furious movies, a clever car thief, auto mechanic, and top street racer. He is a tough, but loyal leader to his crew of street-racing renegades. He also had a religious side, and always put his family first.
Jason Statham
The Transporter, Death Race
In Deathrace, he played an innocent convict, who was sent to a "prison of sorts" after being framed for his wife's murder. He is informed, by a corrupt warden, that the only way to "win his freedom back" is to win a deadly street race. In The Transporter, he is a former Special Forces officer, and highly skilled professional driver, who can hold his own in a fight.
Dwayne Johnson
Fast Five, Faster
In Fast Five, he plays Luke Hobbs a highly skilled federal agent who is good behind the wheel. In Faster, he is referred to as "Driver" and plays an ex-con who has a strong desire to avenge his brother's murder. It's not hard to imagine him expertly handling an escape car or holding his own against criminals, ultimately defeating them with brute strength and silver tongued one-liners.
Paul Walker
The Fast & The Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Fast & Furious, Fast Five
He played Brian O'Conner in the series of Fast & Furious movies, an elite street racer, and a former F.B.I agent turned rogue. Whether he is hot wiring a car, or fast talking his way out of a difficult situation, he makes it all look good.
Stephen Dorff
Carjacked, Public Enemies
He is in the upcoming thriller "Carjacked," a film that will, assumedly push him into the realm of GTA worthy contestants. In Public Enemies, he played Homer "Wane" Van Meter, a Criminal, and bank robber, widely known as a criminal associate of John Dillinger.

Who would be the best GTA Movie "Bad Guy"?

The "Bad Guys"

So, you've seen my top pics for "lead role" actors in a GTA inspired movie. But who would make the best "bad guy" in a GTA movie? The following is a quick selection of a few actors that I can see as potential GTA antagonists.

Daniel Craig, a critically acclaimed actor, strikes me as the sort of actor that would make a great Crime Boss. He is currently the poster boy for James Bond.

I can see Jet Li playing a major villain, he has the flair for it, and is an action movie veteran. In a few of the past Grand Theft Auto games there were Chinese crime families called Triads, I think it would be cool if he was the Triad boss.

In the past Dolph Lundgren has had quite a few good guy roles, but I think he did a better job in films where he was the bad guy. I picture Dolph’s on screen character as the ultimate villain, with that said I think he would do a great job being the boss of a Russian criminal organization.

Feel free to drop a note in the comments, and share your opinion as to who you think would make the best GTA movie lead or antagonist, and don't forget to vote in the polls!

Thanks, I love the series too, and have likewise spent years playing it. I hadn't thought of Benicio del Toro, but great idea!

Great Ideas for a GTA Movie. I love this series and have wasted many years of my life playing it. But How about Benicio del Toro playing the lead? I would use the storyline from GTA 3. Voted Up !
