Great Nintendo 64 Games for a Nintendo Themed Party

Updated on March 10, 2008

Nintendo 64

For my brother's 13th birthday he decided on a Nintendo themed party. While I suppose you could have a Nintendo themed party without video game time, he had to have video game time since that is why he chose the theme. So instead of letting him play his favorite one player games while other watched, I helped give him some options for games on Nintendo systems that were great for multiple players. Below are the games I came up with for Nintendo 64 along with a description of each and ideas for prizes if you choose the game as a competition one. The good thing about choosing Nintendo 64 games is that they are often under $20 to buy if you do not already have them compared to the higher cost of Gamecube and Wii games. Pick a few and/or some of your other favorite multiplayer games and enjoy.

Mario Kart 64

This is a great multiplayer racing game. It features favorite Mario characters, several course, and can be played by up to four players at a time. There are two multiplayer modes. There is versus where you try to get the others to lose all their balloons before you lose yours. There is also a race each other mode. Either way you could choose a number of times someone has to win to win the competition for this game. A good prize is one of those small cars made by Hot Wheels.

Price: tends to sell between $15 and $20 on eBay w/o shipping included, usually same price or cheaper at local used game stores if you have one that still sells Nintendo 64 games and no shipping costs this way

Pokemon Stadium 2

Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Stadium 2

These are great multiplayer games for the Pokemon lover. You can do the competition by doing a round robin competition in 1 vs. 1 stadium mode. The other option is to do the champion mode of mini games. Either way a good prize is a Pokemon TCG booster pack.

Price: Pokemon Stadium tends to sell for as low as $1 on eBay without transfer pack, which you only need if you want to import Pokemon from Red, Blue, or Yellow, does not include shipping cost, Pokemon Stadium 2 tends to be around $15 not including shipping on eBay w/o transfer pack

The New Tetris

This is the perfect multiplayer for those that like puzzle games. It is not just normal Tetris. It has a cool feature of making gold and silver squares and getting bonus points when you clear them. There are a few different modes to play. You can pick one or do them all to crown the champion. A good prize might be those small plastic puzzle party favors.

Price: this usually sells for about $20 and sometimes more, so you may want to go with Pokemon Puzzle League described below if price is an issue and you want a puzzle game

Pokemon Puzzle League

Pokemon Puzzle League

This is a fun match three of the same type to clear the blocks type of puzzle game with a Pokemon them. There are different play modes. I have not played this in a long time, but from what I remember it only was for up to 2 players, so you probably need to do a round robin for this competition. Like Pokemon Stadium, a Pokemon booster pack makes a nice prize.

Price: this puzzle game tends to sell around $2 or less on eBay, make sure you pay attention and do not accidentally buy the game boy version of this game if the auction has no picture

Mario Party, Mario Party 2, Mario Party 3

It name implies that it is a party game and the variety of mini games and board game style of game play make it quite enjoyable. The version of the game you get does not really matter. Whatever you can find and if you find multiple ones go for one with the cheaper price. They are all fun. Pretty much anything you want can be the prize for the winner. I could not think of a good themed one to go with it that would be easy to get.

Price: Depending on the version the game tends to cost between $12 and $30 on eBay, while this can be an expensive party game and can also be the only one you need since it offers a good amount of game play time

Mario Golf

Mario Golf

In my opinion this is the best sports game in terms of multiplayer aspect. You can play up to four at a time and you can even do so with one controller. There are several ways to play including competing for the lowest score on different courses and mini golf. A good prize may be a golf ball with writing on it saying something like champion golfer at the person's party on whatever the day is.

Price: tends to cost about $10 not including shipping

Rugrats Scavenger Hunt

Rugrats Scavenger Hunt

This is a board game like game with different objectives depending on the board you play on. It is especially fun for younger kids and can be played by up to four at the same time. You can in some cases even play on teams. A good prize for the winner(s) might be a small puzzle.

Price: tends to cost less than $5 on eBay not including shipping
