SPICY is really hot
Colorful Culinairy Festival in Maasmechelen
Oh yes..."SPICY"...is indeed "hot" in Maasmechelen (village in north-eastern part of Belgium), where the group "Maasmechelen Leisure Valley" organizes this event yearly, already for the third time in a row. It is always somewhere at the end of august or beginning of september, some kind of celebrating the end of summer vacation. This year, it was in september 7th-9th, in the Village Festival Area. More than 10,000 visitors enjoy this "tastiest and most enjoyable festival" in the valley of the "Meuse" (Maas), the border area with the Netherlands.
Several local restaurant owners, but also different associations present small culinary snacks. During all those days, there is also a varied cultural program of dance and music groups. In all the stands you can taste various delicacies, presented by top gastronomic restaurants, but also by different cultural groups, living in this community. My "Slovenian community" is also participating every year. In fact, there are two Slovenian Communities (Slomsek, and Sv. Barbara), so both are participating together. For this year they invited the Folklore Group Skofja Loka from Slovenia, to participate in the cultural program and to represent the Slovenian culture (dance folklore). It's one of the most "coziest" festivals in this region. Many tastes - many cultures - many colors.
Gastronomy and International Cuisine
All those years, "the Ambassador" of this culinary festival is: top masterchef Alex Clevers (restaurant Vivendum). He is presenting on this festival top dishes in cooperation with different local restaurants, and promoting local specialties.
But also different cultural associations, living and integrated in this village already for decades, are presenting their best dishes from mothers kitchen: Turkey, Poland, Italy, Spain, Greece, Slovenia...
So during this 3-day-tasty-festival, you can also enjoy a cultural program with several performing groups. The whole-day programs are also filled by different cultural groups, representing music, folklore, dance from their mother country. The Slovenian Group invited for this occasion the Slovenian Folklore Group from Skofja Loka.
So if you put the question, "what is happening NOW" in this local community of Maasmechelen? today? This is it. It isn't just happening NOW, this festival. But it "happened" in the beginning of September this year. But it is a fact. It is happening "every day". We live already for many generations all together in "peace", as loyal local citizens, as brothers. And yes. Maasmechelen (about 35,000 residents), is counting more then 20 nationalities, and 75% have some foreign blood in their vains. So, we are a "mixed community". And just THIS is happening NOW. Every day. And I'm proud to be "one" of them.
