Determining Value Of Costume Jewelry

Caring For Vintage Rhinestone Jewelry

Condition is one of the most important factors when it comes to determining the value of any piece of rhinestone costume jewelry. Keeping your rhinestones in excellent condition is the best way to get the most out of them if and when you decide to sell them. Here are a few basic things to remember when caring for your rhinestone costume jewelry.

A true glass rhinestone has foil on the backside. This foil can become damaged when exposed to moisture. So when cleaning your rhinestones NEVER dip the piece in any sort of liquid. Instead lay the piece on a flat dry cloth or towel and then use a clean, dry cosmetic brush to dust off the piece.

If your rhinestones look a little cloudy and you have to use a gentle household cleaner on it then use a toothbrush to gently brush the stones making sure not to get any excess liquid into the rhinestones setting as this is how the foil on the back of your rhinestones becomes ruined and will eventually cause the rhinestone to lose its brilliance.

After carefully brushing the stones be sure and turn the piece upside down onto the dry cloth or towel and let it set for three to four hours until completely dry before putting them away.

Never spray perfumes, deodorants, or hairsprays around your rhinestone costume jewelry. These products will stick to the stones resulting in damage.

Do not store your rhinestones in direct sunlight or in hot places. Heat causes the glue to melt and moisture to form destroying the rhinestones.

Be sure that you do not store your rhinestone costume jewelry on top of each other. The glass stones could get cracked or chipped.

Do not store your rhinestones in plastic bags. Moisture can become trapped inside the bags causing damage to the piece.

Always be careful when handling your rhinestone jewelry. If you happen to drop a piece the stones can become loose, fall out or crack.

Taking these small steps will help you to keep your rhinestone costume jewelry in beautiful condition.
