Collecting Rare View Master Reel Packets and Where to Find Them

Updated on July 11, 2011

Collecting View-Master reels is an educational and interesting passion for collectors of all ages. Finding vintage reels that were first available over fifty years ago adds excitement and challenge to your collecting. In addition, it will make your collection worth more money. There are many places to find rare view-master packets, but a well-organized plan provides faster results.

  1. Research available sources to discover reel packets that were produced. Locate a complete reel list on the internet. Refer to collectable View-Master reference guides to make sure your list of slide packets is complete.

  2. From your master list, select the reel packets that you would most like to add to your collection. Give these packets priority in your search. Next, decide your priority for adding other packets. For example, will you give greater importance to older packets, packets that have a higher list value, or packets in better condition?
  3. Begin your search with online resources. Bid for packets on eBay and other auction sites. Find rare packets at When searching, type in (view) only to get the best results.

  4. Take your search on the road. You can find valuable View-Master reels at bargain prices at garage sales and flea markets. Do not forget thrift stores. Investing a small amount of time may result in finding the priority reel packets on your list.

  5. Search the classified sections of your local and community newspapers. Look in the photography or toy areas. Place your own add in the (items wanted) sections of these publications.

  6. When you add reel packets to your collection, keep your slides in the best possible condition. The best way to care for view-master slides is to brush them gently with a camel’s hair brush. These soft bristle brushes allow you to keep your slides clean without damaging picture quality. Of course, this will increase the value of your collection.

The magical fun we had as children collecting these amazing 3D "Gems" can be recaptured today as adults. With so many genres of View Master packets made over their ever so popular years, we can search for endless titles to make our collection admirable. Whether it was the old Scooby Doo mystery machine adventures or the spaced-out episodes of the Jetsons, you will be sure to find both Shaggy and Elroy if you search hard enough for the vintage treasures. Cartoons were only a small part of the View Master reel universe of entertainment. From movies like Star Wars to Old westerns such as The Lone Ranger, there was so much for us to enjoy. If you are lucky enough in your quest for childhood memories you might even find the rare talking View Master unit, which not only showed us 3D images but spoke to us to narrate each beautiful picture. So search out your favorite packets, and jump back into that view master world of yesteryear.

Want to buy View-Master reels? The best place I know of is eBay. Want to get a good idea of what your old reels are worth? Also eBay. Just do a search and see what others are charging for similar items.

Very cool Hub! I have a collection of viewmaster reels that my uncle gave to me from the 40s and 50s, and I also have some from the 80s, (mostly Disney stuff). I would like to start collecting more, and this Hub was a great read.
