How Portable Is the Nintendo Switch, Really?

Updated on February 23, 2019

Katherine is a gamer of many years, and a loyal Nintendo fan. She owns most of Nintendo's consoles and portable systems.

The answer: It's more portable than it's given credit for

Yes, there are a lot of bells and whistles that the Switch includes, but if you're willing to be a little picky about how many of those you bring along, the system becomes a lot more portable very quickly.

Despite the Switch's notoriously bad battery life, it's more of a portable console than it seems.

Yeah, it's battery is pretty terrible

...but that can be avoided in the same way that having your phone die on you while you're out and about can be.

In this day and age, Charging stations and outlets are absolutely everywhere. And with the AC adapter from the Switch's charging/HDMI dock being removable and able to be plugged into the system itself, It's just as easy to charge as any phone.

Accessories, Accessories

We all know about how many accessories the Switch has. It can take up quite a bit of space, including them all, so it just requires some discretion.

What you really need to do is think about what kind of gameplay you're planning on indulging in while you're out, and exactly what accessories will be needed to do so comfortably. How many players will there be? Do you really need your Pro Controller to play Breath of the Wild on the go? These are the kinds of things that you need to consider.

Where the heck do I keep it all?

While there are plenty Nintendo Switch specific bags and backpacks available, both official from Nintendo and otherwise, sometimes those can be a little too pricey; Even for the convenience that they bring.

One of the good things about the Nintendo Switch is how small it is. It's not that much bigger than a Nintendo 3DS XL! It'll fit into any purse, backpack, or tote bag that you have, as well as a few accessories and cartridge containers.

Throw your Nintendo Switch, the AC Adapter, any Joy-Con accessories that you'll need, and your cartridge containers into a bag of your choosing, And you're pretty much good to go. You can leave the bulky dock at home and enjoy Mario Party, Splatoon 2, or Breath of the Wild on the go as much as you please!

Powerful for it's size

In terms of how "worth it" it would be to bring your Nintendo Switch out and about- It's as powerful as any Playstation or XBOX, especially when compared to a 3DS. If you want high-quality, classic Nintendo fun on the go, the Nintendo Switch is perfect for you.

In the end...

Is it worth it?

Well... That's up to you.

It's not as easily portable as the Gameboy or the Nintendo 3DS, but it IS portable if you want it to be. If there's any games that you really want to play on the go and you're willing to go the extra mile, it's not that hard to tote along and play outside of the house, as long as you don't mind the small screen.

Good luck, and happy gaming!
