How to Choose an SCA Name and Persona
The Society for Creative Anachronism is an organization that participates in living history of the Middle Ages. Each person who participates is encouraged to choose a name for their persona. There are several ways to choose your new name.
The easiest way is to decide what country and time period your persona will live in. For instance, if you want to portray a person from Wales in the 1100's, you know you need a name that existed at that time.
If you love clothing, you can use this to choose your persona name. Look through some costuming books. Look through a book of paintings from the middle ages. There you will find examples of clothing. If you find something you like, for example something from France in the 1500's, then you should build your persona around that and choose your name from that period.
Or maybe you enjoy stories and sagas from this time period. Maybe the myths of King Arthur catch your fancy. Find out when he is supposed to have existed and choose your name according to those that were used at that time.
You do not have to choose a name right away. Take some time to do some research. Maybe there is an activity in the SCA that you enjoy. Find out where it was popular and in what time period.
No matter what method you use to choose your SCA name, it should be something personal. Do not chose a name, or persona for that matter, because of someone else's interests. You will be known by this name, so it should be something you have chosen to represent yourself. It should be something you like.
