How to Host a Fun Baby Shower

Updated on November 4, 2015

Why Host A Baby Shower?

Why host a baby shower? I think the better question is 'Why NOT host a baby shower?'
A baby shower is beneficial to both expecting parents because there are so many beginning expenses when you add a new little member to the family.

When a couple is expecting a new baby they have many expenses to worry about:

  • Clothes
  • Newborn diapers
  • Baby lotions
  • Baby bath supplies
  • Baby Strollers
  • Educational Baby toys
  • Car-seats

This list goes on and on. Have you ever heard the term "It takes a village to raise a child"...Well they weren't lying. At least it takes a village to prepare for a child. I have had two children (8 years apart) and I can't tell you how grateful I was when family and friends pulled together to give me, and my husband, the boost that we needed. Plus having a celebration for a new little one is always fun. Who doesn't love babies? I'd have a dozen of them if I could. Instead I can live vicariously through others when helping to organize their Baby Showers.

Party Time

Getting Organized for The Baby Shower

As the Host it is your job to gather the essential people, plan out materials needed, and supply a place for the Baby Shower to be held. However, there are many factors to consider when organizing a baby shower so it is best to have enough time for planning. I would suggest 1-3 months to supply a creative, fun baby shower filled when plenty of people to share in the celebration, and assist with funding.

As the Host/Organizer you need to figure out:

  1. WHO will be helping pay for necessary materials and supplies?
  2. WHAT type of Baby Shower you will have? (themed, family oriented, females only etc)
  3. WHEN will the Baby Shower be held?
  4. WHERE will the baby Shower be held?

We already know WHY you are having a Baby Shower. Someone you care about is having a baby!

Funding Your Baby Shower

Money doesn't grow on trees, and as I stated above; preparing for a baby is expensive. So once you have gathered friends and family together, on the idea of the Baby Shower, it is time to find out who will help pay for the various costs. I guess you can call them extended Godmothers, and Godfathers.

Assign a different Sponsor, (Godparent) For each sectioned expense:
(Unless they choose to fund more than one)

  • Food
  • Baby Shower Cake
  • Game materials
  • Prizes (for games won)
  • Decorations and/or Invitations
  • Table/Chair/Tent rentals
  • Music
  • Location of Event

Once you have decided on which person will sponsor which item you can then begin specific parameters of each element. You will need to meet with each Sponsor several times to discuss options for themes, needed rental equipment, specific game materials, type of food, and genre of music played. I suggest holding group meeting when possible. There might even be new ideas or additions that you hadn't thought about.

Baby Shower Location

Deciding on WHERE to have the Baby Shower will also be dependent on how many guests are expected, weather conditions, and when the baby shower will be held. Some locations will be readily available during certain times of the year than others will be.

Places to Consider when choosing where the Baby Shower will be held:

  • Your home
  • A friend/family member's home
  • Home of the Expecting Grandmother/Grandfather
  • A Community Center
  • Local Park
  • Poolside (If an aquatic themed location or if Host has a pool available)

The standard location for a Baby Shower is usually the mother of the expecting mom, however it would be wise to choose a location that has enough space for all of the guests, games, and food area. If grandma doesn't have a space large enough to accommodate the above stated then choosing an alternate indoor location is preferred especially if you are planning months ahead of time. Weather patterns that far in advance cannot be predicted and the last thing you want is mommy to-be to get soaked in an unplanned downpour.

Baby Shower Invitations

You will need to get a guest list together to decide how many people you will be accommodating. Not everyone who is invited will attend, even with advance notice, but plan for everyone whom you invite to attend anyway.
The invitations will need to have the following information:

  • Whether it's for a Boy or Girl
  • Date and Time
  • Address of Event
  • Chosen Theme
  • Gift Registry Information
  • RSVP Information (A Contact number of the Host/Organizer/Event Planner)

    • In this day and age of electronic communication I would also include a contact email address.

Baby Shower Game Time

Now here comes the fun part: Deciding what games to play. It is also important to remember that you will need prizes for each game that your participants win. Having extra small good faith gifts, aka mementos or party favors for your guest is also a good idea.

Here is a list of Baby Shower games followed by descriptions on how to play them:

  • What Did Baby Eat?
  • Picking Safety Pins out of Rice
  • Musical Present
  • Feeding Baby (blind folded)
  • Picking Cotton
  • Grab the Laundry
  • Potato drop baby
  • Dressing baby
  • Don't Cross your legs

On the day of the baby shower (after all of the guest have arrived) gather one personal item from each lady. It is best to wait at least an hour and a half to two hours after the Baby Shower begins.

  1. Place each of their personal items in a basket or bowl.
  2. Before each game you will draw a personal item from the basket/bowl. This will determine who gets to play the game.
  3. After withdrawing the personal item please make sure to return each item to it's proper owner.

First Baby Shower Game

Name of The Game
Don't Cross Your Legs

  • Between 20-30 necklaces (depending on your expected guests)
    • These necklaces sport a miniature pacifier.

      How To Play
As your guests arrive place a necklace over their head. They are to wear this necklace during the course of the Baby Shower. If at anytime during the baby shower a person is caught crossing their legs..they lose their necklace to the person who catches them. The person who catches the person crossing their legs gets to keep the necklace and adds the necklace to their own. Anyone who is wearing a necklace can play. The person with the most necklaces by the end of the baby shower wins. (You are not allowed to point out to anyone else when someone is crossing their legs. That is cheating.)

Baby Shower Food

Always make sure you have enough food for your baby shower guests. The best way to do that is to offer a variety of choices in a buffet or family style like setting. Prepare a neatly decorated area to place a table or two covered with the themed table cloths of choice. Let us not forget the lovely decorated Baby Shower Cake. You should display the Baby Shower cake in a separate area away from the regular baby shower food.

The following items make excellent Baby Shower food:

  • Mixed fruit plates
  • Cheese and Crackers
  • Cupcakes
  • Cookies
  • Assorted Veggies with ranch dressing for dipping
  • Deli Rolls
  • Chips, Salsa, and guacamole
  • Pizza
  • Potato salad
  • Mixed Green Salad

If you are more interested on less snack-able foods and more meal course related then you can also have a potluck Baby Shower. Each guest can bring a dish.
You also have other options such as catering services. You can find catering services in a wide range of delicacies. Such as Sushi, Mexican Food (Hello personal taco truck), BBQ, etc. It all depends on the Baby Shower budget, and the theme you are working with.

Baby Shower Gift Ideas

If the expecting parents already have a baby registry at one of your local stores then that takes away the guesswork. However, say the parents of the expected baby do not have a registry..Now what do you get them? There are many little items that often go unnoticed when planning for a baby. Sure you could buy them a baby car-seat, baby stroller, baby bath, or expensive playpen, but the parents will honestly need help with the many minuscule necessities.

The following is a list of useful gifts that will be appreciated:

  • Diapers size 1 (Newborn diapers are appreciated, but babies grow out of them quickly)
  • Baby Lotion
  • Baby Bath wash
  • Baby Shampoo
  • Select Baby Onesies (size 0-3 months)
  • Baby blankets
  • Baby Wash cloths
  • Rattles
  • Baby powder
