How to Make Gil in FF 14 Online

There are a variety of ways to make gil (money) in Final Fantasy XIV Online. Some ways take a a lot of time, but can be a sure thing. While other ways involve much more risk and involve spending gil to make gil.

Below I outline five of the best ways to make gil in Final Fantasy XIV Online. I have employed all of these and found myself gaining gil as I progressed throughout the game, instead of losing gil like other players.

Overview of the Markets

Here is an overview of the markets:

  • Market boards can be found in all three of the major cities, typically where vendors and retainers are located.
  • Retainers sell items for you, which are unlocked once the level 17 main storyline quest is completed.
  • You can have two retainers, and each one can sell up to 20 items at a time.
  • Retainers hold items and gil. When items are sold, the gil goes to your retainer, which you can pull out.
  • While you have your retainer summoned, items will not be sold on the market. So don't go AFK with the retainer out.

The Market in Final Fantasy XIV Online

The market is the best way to make gil in Final Fantasy XIV Online, if you don't mind taking some risks. I have lost thousands of gil, only to make it back tenfold just a few hours later. Here are some tips on how to play the market:

  • Check the history of items before investing. Just because the item is listed for 10,000 gil doesn't mean it sells for that. Check the history, you could be surprised.
  • Check the current tax rate. Tax can affect a lot, so check the tax rate and sell items in the appropriate city to keep your profits to a maximum.
  • Materia is the best way to start. I started out my market dealing career with materia. It's easy to search and offers low risk investments. You won't be pulling a lot of gil in at first, but it's a great way to start.
  • Buy large stacks of items, and break them up into more expensive smaller stacks. Some crafters just need a small amount of something for an item they are making. But gathers will sell large stacks of an item. You can buy that large stack at a low price, then break them up into smaller stacks to sell at a higher price.
  • Don't try to buy everything of an item in an attempt to re-sell it at a high price. Prices go up and down rapidly sometimes, so it's not possible to corner the market on an item. Keep in mind you are competing with everyone since all of the markets are linked. So unless you know it's a very rare item, I would avoid this tactic.

What's Your Favorite Trade Skill?

Tradeskills in Final Fantasy XIV Online

Tradeskills take the most time out of any of these choices, but the payoff can be well worth it. While you can choose any profession you want, here is what I recommend on how you should approach tradeskills:

  • Choose one gathering and two crafting professions. That will allow you to maximize your profits. Ensure the gathering profession provides materials for each crafting profession.
  • Don't try to level them all the way up immediately. Every time I would gain five levels in a job, I would switch. This allowed me not to get bored, and to sell off the items I made.
  • Don't be afraid to spend a lot of gil buying materials. Some materials can only be found by item drops from monsters, or from other professions. Once I hit level 25, I spent 10,000 gil buying materials to craft the items for my trade profession.
  • Do some levequests. Levequests aren't necessary for gathering, but for crafting it can be. This will allow you to earn some gil and experience, while not using as many materials just making items. I recommend not turning in high quality items though, just normal items. Grand company quests can be run as well to earn experience and seals, however they won't earn any gil.
  • Try to make high quality items. High quality items always sell, no matter what level you are. So strive to make high quality items. You will make your money back, and then some.

Overview of Levequests

Here is an overview of levequests:

  • You will earn 3 levequests every 12 hours, up to a maximum of 100.
  • Levequests unlock every 5 levels, provided you speak to the appropriate levemete.
  • Once you unlock a levemete, you can typically talk to one in a main city, and they will provide leves for the appropriate level.

Levequests in Final Fantasy XIV Online

I consider levequests to be a lot of fun. Not only do they offer a variety of missions, but it's a great opportunity to earn gil and items to sell on the market. Here's how:

  • Only run battlecraft leves. This is where you will find the most opportunity for items to use or sell on the market. The other leves provide some rewards, but aren't as profitable. Battlecraft leves are where the items are at.
  • Pick a battlecraft leve that has an item as a reward. Even if it's an item you can't use, it could be something you can sell on the market. Typically pick the leve's that offer a piece of gear, not potions or food.
  • Hunt for treasure chests. During leves, you can come across a treasure chest. Open it for an item to wear, potions, etc. In a way this helps increase your profit. Search all areas, even if you are about to finish the leve.
  • Set the difficulty to max. If you finish the leve with all of the objectives completed, you will typically receive a bonus. Try to kill any bounty targets as well. That means more gil and experience.
  • Avoid grand company leves. These will offer lesser rewards, in favor of giving you grand company seals. Grand company seals are easy to get other ways, so bypass these leves.

Levequests can offer a small money reward, but can also offer item rewards which can sell well on the market.

Dungeons and Guildhests in Final Fantasy XIV Online

Dungeons and guildhests offer different ways to earn some gil. While they may not offer as much profit initially, they can offer some high level items to sell on the market.

  • Run all the guildhests at least once. The gil rewards are high for completing one the first time. After that, they can be ran for a smaller gil reward, but they don't take that much time to run at all which makes it worth it.
  • Dungeons are great for chests and items. If you are lucky with loot rolls, you could find yourself with items to vendor for gil, or items to sell on the market. Plus if you help someone complete a dungeon for the first time without any problems, you'll receive a bonus.
  • Be a healer or tank. These two roles tend to queue up quickly for both guildhests and dungeons. If you plan to focus on this route, then playing these two roles will increase your profit.
  • Avoid the trials. The trails ran through the duty finder, after the first time, don't offer anything but playing an epic battle again. So don't run these if you are trying to earn gil.
  • Be a good player. Unlike the other ways, you will be relying on others and they will be relying on you. So learn your class and try your best when in a guildhest or a dungeon.

Don't Heal in Fates

Unless you are in a group, don't heal in fates. Healing won't give you a lot of credit, so you won't get a gold metal. Instead, choose tank or DPS. If you do have to heal, throw off AoE attacks to hit multiple targets.

Fates in Final Fantasy XIV Online

Fates are one of the more popular ways to level in Final Fantasy XIV Online. However, they are also a great way of earning gil. Here are some tips when tackling fates.

  • Group with others. Not only does that help increase experience, but it will help you get a gold medal, which gives you the max reward.
  • Try to tag enemies right away. This will increase your chances of getting items that you can turn around and sell on the market.
  • Don't expect to earn a lot. This is a very slow way to earn gil, but it's very reliable, especially if you get item drops.
  • Do other things in between fates. Work on gathering, questing, or whatever else in between fates. If you are in a fate group, that could be all you are doing. But if you are soloing, mixing things up can be good.
  • Stick with the pack. If you want to blaze through multiple fates, then stick with the main group. Soloing fates just takes a lot longer and lowers how much you earn in the long run. A large number of players can complete fates quickly.

Other Tips For Earning Gil in Final Fantasy XIV Online

Here are some general tips that should apply no matter what you are doing in Final Fantasy XIV Online if you wish to earn or save on some gil:

  • Don't buy gil! More than likely it's a scam. You will more than likely get hacked or lose out on some cash. Plus it encourages the spammers to spam more.
  • Repair using your trade skills. In the end it's much cheaper to repair your own items, so if you have the skills, repair your own items rather than having an NPC repair them for you.
  • Wear items to turn them into materia. Even if you don't consider the item an upgrade, if you can wear it to turn it into materia that sells on the market, then do it.
  • Run all the quests. A lot of the quests offer item rewards, or allagan pieces that can be sold for gil. Do all of the main storyline quests as well.
  • Join a free company. Having others to work with will help you get gil, items, and progress further. So join a free company.
