Is It Worth getting: BioShock Infinite Review (No Spoilers)
When you get bored from the same games over and over again or you just want a nice change of scenery people always go looking at the brand new games. By using gameplay videos and firsthand testimonies, everyone tries to figure out if a game is worth getting, which is exactly what this article will help you do. The first thing you need to know is that BioShock infinite is a first person shooter with slight RPG elements thrown in, so if that doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then you should probably stop here. If not, then here is some information on BioShock Infinite
One of BioShock's main draws is its combination of both slightly weird looking weapons and plasmids, now called vigors. The powers you can gain from vigors include possessing bad guys, shooting fire grenades from your hands, summoning a murder of murderous crows, generating a magnetic shield that can absorb and return damage shooting a forceful wall of water or a massive tentacle to reign in enemies, creating a wave of force that lifts enemies in the air, and a chargeable wind rush attack. This mechanic is one of the main reasons I got into BioShock, because I always thought it would be cool to mix superheros and soldiers, and that is exactly the outcome that occurs. But while vigors are one of the best draws in BioShock, they are also only once piece of the puzzle, that other half being the weapons. From heat shotguns to long range rifles and high powered pistols BioShock keeps it's traditional array of strange but powerful weapons present, with all the weapons sounding and feeling amazing. By combining the two gameplay elements of vigors and weapons, BioShock makes you feel incredible.
The setting of BioShock infinite lives up to it's prestigious name, delivering one of the coolest concepts in gaming for quite a while. So first came rapture, which is basically Atlantis, so when the designers got bored they thought "Huh, I wonder where else nobody would ever in their right mind put a city, oh I know, thousands of feet off the ground", so was born Columbia, the city in the clouds. Since Infinite takes place in 1912, the developers used a very cool WWI looking world and put in steampunk ideas like massive balloons being able to hold up everyone and robots patrolling the cities. The outcome creates a very futuristic looking city that could have come straight out a comic book that was published in the early 20's. Adding on the setting are the enemies of Columbia. There are the standard foot soldiers that you would always expect to see, but there are also people that have steel arms and steam generators attached to their bodies, while others are hyped up on vigors and cause a ton of problems. The enemy that is the most iconic though are the patriots massive robots wielding Gatling guns, with Uncle Sam clothing, George Washington faces, and angel wings, which basically a microcosm of Columbia in robot form. If you thought rapture was cool, your going to love Columbia.
The new features are the most important part of almost any game (except maybe the plot but this is no spoliers), and luckily irrational came through with some cool new toys for us to play with. The first is the Skyhook, its the little spiny steel gauntlet thing that lets you ride around of sky rails very quickly, it is also a melee weapon that has some brutal executions The best part about it is that it lets you fight on the rails and get better positioning on your enemies, but it is a double sided sword because your enemies can use proficiently as well. The most important new change though is Elizabeth. The whole reason that you are in Columbia in the first place is because somebody is willing to wipe your debt clean to get her, and it is not hard to figure out why. Throughout the game Elizabeth won't actually shoot at the enemies or go god mode and slaughter everybody, but she will provide you with more options. Lets say that you are facing a group of enemies on the other side of an open valley, but you don't have any long range weapons, you can't get across because they will tear you to sheds on your way there, so what do you do? Actually it's not you, it's Elizabeth. She will summon a piece of cover that will allow you to get across safely and finish the mission, or give you ammo for your long range guns, or heal you on your way there, and all you have to do is ask. As you play the game, Elizabeth's options will be in a light blue/ purple outline, and you can ask her to make the structure or give you something for no charge. This concept works great because it allows you to actually do everything yourself, while still needing Elizabeth's help to do it. These new features are two things that I personally have never seen before, and thoroughly enjoyed incorporating.
The cons of BioShock aren't as minuscule and what I would like though. The game looking great visually but it is actually too hard for some consoles or lower end PC's to run, causing noticeable frame rate issues and poor graphics in some areas, especially on console. The trademark combination of vigors and weapons toward the middle of the game starts to get boring, because in certain areas, you know which vigors are the best for the situation, and it really becomes unfair Besides those problems, Bioshock is a quality game and definitely deserves a closer look if nothing else.
