Skill and Poker

Being the world’s most popular card game, the game of poker enjoys a significant amount of controversy particularly regarding the question “Is poker a game of skill or a game of chance?” People from around the world have debated this question and while some believe it to be highly dependent on one’s understanding of the game, others believe it to be a “try your luck” situation.

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines a skill as “the ability to use one’s knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance” this definition alone justifies the argument that the game of poker requires skill.

Skill can also be defined as expertise in a particular field, i.e. the ability to do something well and judging from the fact that poker and every game that exists is defined by a particular set of rules, it would be accurate to say that in order to perform well in poker, there is need for an adequate and accurate knowledge of the rules governing the game as well as its execution. Football for example is a game with the same rules worldwide and yet there are some players and teams that are better than others, simply because they have more professional ability and skill or strategy of the game than others.

So also, some people are better than others at the game of poker and that, undoubtedly and unmistakably requires skill.

Countries such as UAE, Brunei and Cambodia have categorized poker under land-based gambling and have therefore deemed it illegal whereas countries such as Canada and Bermuda require a license to operate a casino. However if you’re a poker lover and you’re very good at what you do, ensure that you follow your passion in a place that is accepting of it. There are very many licensed casinos around the world if you happen to be the traditional type otherwise you could play the game online and with a good level of skill you should be able to “kill it” at any of them. Relying on chance however will probably be the worst decision that you will ever make.
