LEGO Indiana Jones

LEGO Indiana Jones

In 2007 Lego announced that it would be releasing a LEGO series based on the Indiana Jones movie franchise. The inclusion of guns within the sets was a source of controversy within the company. With the exception of some kits within the licensed themes, LEGO has no military-themed sets because the LEGO founder, Ole Kirk Christiansen, had a policy to not make war seem like child's play.

The Indiana Jones LEGO sets were released in 2008 and become one of their most successful series. They were so popular that it played a significant role in helping boost LEGOs profits for the entire year. The initial release had sets from the movies Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. The sets for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull were released later that year to be in sync with the movie release. There are a couple reasons given for why Temple of Doom was left out of the original release. At one point Lego said “we chose to focus on those most iconic scenes from the original trilogy, which happen to come from Raiders and Last Crusade.” It was also said that “The Temple of Doom as it's themes were 'too dark' and the lack of iconic vehicle scenes in the movie restricted their options further.” In 2009 Temple of Doom was added to complete the film franchise.

LEGO Indiana Jones went beyond the standard brick assembly kits. They also created two LEGO video games and an animated short film called Lego Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Brick.

Item #: 7195

Released: 2009
Ages: 6-12
Pieces: 79
Minifigures:

  1. Indiana Jones (Cairo)
  2. Marion Ravenwood (Cairo)
  3. Cairo Swordsman
  4. Cairo Henchman

Based on the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana and Marion are ambushed at the market in Cairo. Marion is kidnapped and Indiana shoots the expert swordsman in front of him. (Well known trivia fact: Harrison Ford was too sick for the scripted fight sequence so he suggested just shooting the swordsman. The rest is history.)

Ages: 8-14
Pieces: 376
Minifigures:

  1. Indiana Jones
  2. Marion Ravenwood (white dress)
  3. German Mechanic (boxer)
  4. German Pilot

This set recreates the scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark in which Indy and Marion attempt to stop the plane from taking off with the Ark of the Covenant. Indy ends up in a boxing match with a huge mechanic and Marion gets trapped in the cockpit. Lego used the same head for the German mechanic (boxer) and for the Hoth Officer in the Rebel Trooper Battle Pack.

Released: 2008
Ages: 7-14
Pieces: 277
Minifigures:

  1. Indiana Jones
  2. Marion Ravenwood (white dress)
  3. Skeleton

This Lego set is based on the location where the Ark of the Covenant was hiding for centuries. It was also where Indy and Marion were trapped along with thousands of snakes. Luckily, this set only contains 10 snakes. In Raiders of the Lost Ark images of C-3PO and R2-D2 were hidden among the hieroglyphics of the walls in the Well of Souls. Lego hid the same easter eggs in this set.

Item #: 7622
Released: 2008
Ages: 7-14
Pieces: 272
Minifigures:

  1. Indiana Jones
  2. German Soldiers (3)

This Lego set recreates the famous chase scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones goes after the Ark of the Covenant as it is being transported away by the Nazis. In this interpretation, Indy is getting dragged under a truck for a treasure chest full of Lego coins, instead of the Ark. Apparently, LEGO was worried kids would not understand why the famous archeologist would be chasing after a priceless artifact instead of valuable coins.

Pieces: 554
Minifigures:

  1. Indiana Jones
  2. Dr. René Belloq
  3. Satipo
  4. Jock
  5. Skeletons (2)

Our very first introduction to Indiana Jones was in Raiders of the Lost Ark, when he is attempting to retrieve a golden idol from an ancient temple. As he flees for his life, we see him dodge flying arrows, avoiding spiked walls and out running a huge boulder. The scene that got us all hooked is recreated in this massive LEGO set. A fun reference to Star Wars can be found on Jock’s plane. Its registration number is OBI-CPO.

Minifigures:

  1. Indiana Jones (white tuxedo)
  2. Willie Scott (red dress)
  3. Short Round
  4. Kao Kan
  5. Lao Che

This Lego set includes the classic cars used in the chase sequence from The Temple of Doom. Our heroes flee Club Obi-Wan as Short Round drives and Indy takes the antidote, while fighting off the Shanghai gangsters. This would be the first Temple of Doom set released after it was left out of the initial run. There is even a rip on top of the car for Indy and Willie to fall through as they jump from the window.

  1. Indiana Jones (Open Shirt)
  2. Willie Scott (sacrificial dress)
  3. Short Round
  4. Mola Ram
  5. Chief Thuggee
  6. Thuggee Guard

This might come as a shocker but this LEGO set is from the movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Set in the Temple underneath the Palace. It includes what is probably the most famous scene from the movie, the minecart race sequence. With trap doors, booby traps and moving minecarts, this is a very interactive LEGO set. With the tracks enabling you to recreate the chase, the set takes up a lot of space, so make sure you have cleaned your room. Use the bathtub if you wish to recreate the flood sequence.

Released: 2009
Ages: 7-14
Pieces: 384
Minifigures:

  1. Indiana Jones
  2. Henry Jones Sr.
  3. Fighter Plane Pilot

This set was inspired by the airplane chase sequence from The Last Crusade in which Indiana and his father, Henry, attempt to flee the Nazis after being discovered on the blimp they were trying to escape Germany in. The set number 7198 can be found on the German plane four times. It appears as M.F.- 7198 on the wings and at the rear of the fuselage. Remember, LEGOs fall apart when dropped. So, just because Indy doesn't know how to land a plane does not mean you can't either. (Sorry for all the double negatives.)

Minifigures:

  1. Indiana Jones
  2. Henry Jones Sr.
  3. German Motorcycle Soldier

This set was inspired by the motorcycle chase sequence in The Last Crusade, after Indy frees his father from the Nazi castle with many tapestries. This set comes with a map but as we all know it means nothing without the missing pages from Henry’s journal. Also, you are not seeing double. The German Motorcycle Soldier is the same minifigure used for the German Pilot. So Motorcycle Chase and Fighter Plane Attack are the exact same minifigures.

Minifigures:

  2. Elsa Schneider
  3. Kazim
  4. Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword Guard

Inspired by the scene in The Last Crusade where Indiana and Elsa are being chased by the Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword through the Venice Canals, after they have discovered the second marker on the dead knight’s shield. If you are a stickler for details, the flags on the boats are switched from the movie. However, these are LEGOs, so all you have to do is switch the pieces. Elsa Schneider's minifigure has two faces. One side is smiling and the other is screaming in terror. You can decide which fits your scene best.

The Jungle Cruiser is basically a small, green, army jeep and could fit within almost any of the Indiana Jones movies.

Minifigures:

This Lego set does a great job in capturing the action of the Jungle Cutter scene in the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The Jungle Cutter’s blades move when you push it forward and the set comes with break apart trees. (Of course, technically all LEGOs are break apart.) It also has a lever you can push to pop the top off of the vehicle.

This Lego set took some liberties. It does not recreate an actual scene from the movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Instead it combines the Russian camp with the ant attack. Interpret it as you will but I believe they were stretched to find memorable moments in the movie and scrambled for this one. There is no evidence for this, just my opinion.

  5. Russian Soldier
  6. Pilot

This set does not represent any scenes that occurred in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. A scenario was created where Indy and Mutt are being held prisoner by the Russians. They were trying to fly to Peru and find the Lost City of Akator. With a plane, runway tractor and trolley this set includes a lot of the things you might find on an airplane runway. This set was a Toys “R” Us exclusive.

Lego Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Brick was distributed by Cartoon Network and produced by M2Film in 2008. This short film for fans was given a $500,000.00 budget and covered all four of the films in typical Lego humor fashion. It was directed by Peder Pedersen. Peder also wrote the story along with Ole Holm Christensen, Thomas Sebastian Fenger and Keith Malone.

Video Games

Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures
This video game was released in 2008 and was based upon the original trilogy. The Hub world location is set in the university where Dr. Jones works as a professor, when he is not out hunting artifacts or saving the world from the Nazis. The game has 82 characters from the movies and Han Solo was given as a bonus character. Within each level players try to find treasure chest and if you find them all the pieces connect to create different artifacts. This would be the first Lego game where players could interact with items in the environment that had been dropped by other characters or were found lying around. Also, vehicles could be built and ridden within the level as opposed to it being a separate game play level. Since phobias are such a large part of the characters in the film, they were added to the game play. Characters would have restricted movement as they froze in terror until the snake, rat or other creature was eliminated.

Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues
For the second Lego Indiana Jones video game, all four movies were included. Released in 2009, it was the first Lego game to get so many mixed reviews. Some of this came from the negative reception of the new movie, from long time fans. The levels for the original trilogy were completely redesigned so players could enjoy a whole new experience. The Hub world is huge! (I recommend flying around to the different areas. Driving and walking takes too much time.) They used the outside locations of the different movies, along with buildings you can enter and explore. Once again there are 82 characters you can play and the minikits are treasure chest that connect to build an artifact. This game would use the split screen feature which allows players to explore different areas of a level. There were a lot of kinks but was a huge improvement from being forced to stay together on one screen.

On February 16, 2008 LEGO would give 100 of these sets away at their Toy Fair Collectors Party. Harrison Ford portrayed both Indian Jones and Han Solo on the big screen. His larger than life characters would be turned into popular minifigures decades later. The transformation chamber honors both the characters and the actor who played them.
