LEGO Monster Fighters Moonstones

The Monster Fighter building sets were first released in May of 2012 and would be discontinued by 2013. The important thing is that they made it through Halloween. LEGO fans had some fun models to decorate their house in the Halloween spirit.

The sets would be based around a story very similar to The Monster Squad movie from 1987. To avoid copyright and trademark issues there have been some obvious changes made to the classic monsters that people have come to know and love. (Count Dracula/Lord Vampyre, Frankenstein/Crazy Scientist and Gill Man or Creature From The Black Lagoon/Swamp Creature)

When Lord Vampyre’s Bride want a Moonstone, like a good husband, he goes and gets one. He discovers that if he can bring six of these stones together, then he can cause the sun to be eclipsed forever and like an evil monster he keeps the Moonstone. With the possibility of an eternal night and never having to fear the sun again, he begins hunting for the other stones. Rodney Rathbone uncovers Lord Vampyre’s plan and calls upon Frank Rock, Major Quinton Steele, Ann Lee and Jack McHammer to help steal the stones from the other monsters before Lord Vampyre. The seven Moonstones are uniquely decorated to match their respective monsters. The designs are of a bat, seaweed, lightning bolt, ghost, wolf, Eye of Horus and zombie hand.

The boxes to each of these building sets contained a comic on the back. It shows Lord Vampyre in his castle with all the moonstones, except the one located in the box. Lord Vampyre then acquires the missing stone and the monster in the set is angry at being tricked. It ends with all the Moon Stones are collected and are used to turn day into night.

The Crazy Scientist And His Monster

Item #: 9466

Released: 2012

Ages: 8-14

Pieces: 430

Minifigures:

  1. The Carzy Scientist

  2. The Monster

  3. Dr. Rodney Rathebone

  4. Major Quinton Steele

Dr. Rodney Rathebone and Major Quinton Steele race to find the Green Lightning Moonstone, but the Crazy Scientist is about to bring his monster to life. The monster’s main antagonist, Jack McHammer, is sitting this fight out and not included in the building set.

This monster fighters have a light blue car, with lots of fun features to help in their battle against the evil creatures of the night. The roof contains two different colored flick-fire missiles and another flick-fire missile is located on the side of the extended platform. There is a hidden third wheel to help the car move at super speeds. Their vehicle also comes with a radar dish and chain.

The laboratory is located underground, but since you can’t see something that is buried, the box displays it as castle ruins. The lab has a small jail for prisoners. However, the wall can be pulled down using the chain that comes with the car. The roof of the castle has a catapult that can launch chemicals (1x1 round bricks) at invaders. It is the lab that brings the monster back to life where all the fun stuff is. The laser used to capture the lightning can actually light up and the slab the Monster lays on can move.

Minifigures:

  1. Ghost

This is a simple mini building set that contains a glow in the dark Ghost minifigure and grandfather clock. The Ghost Train

Item #: 9467

Released: 2012

Ages: 8-14

Pieces: 741

Minifigures:

  1. Ghost (3)

  2. Ann Lee

  3. Frank Rock

Ann Lee and Frank Rock chase down the Ghost Train somewhere in The Moor Of Woe And Wailing. They hope their airplane is fast enough to beat Lord Vampyre to the Light Blue Ghost Moonstone.

The Ghost Train is comprised of four detachable cars. The engine and its boiler are the largest section of the train. The boiler’s furnace has a movable red lever above it and the furnace door can be opened to add more “coals”. Only one minifigure can fit in the engine’s cabin compartment. The other ghosts minifigures have to sit in the two separate bone carriages. These carriages also fit one minifigure and have flappable wings. The last car of the Ghost Train is a prison that is used to hold their victims. The train has working wheels to move along the ground and does not require tracks. With 20 glow in the dark pieces, the train has more glowing elements than any other LEGO Monster Fighter model. This would be a huge selling feature.

The heroes airplane can be piloted by one Minifigure, while the other one has to hold on to a chain as they are dragged through the air. This aircraft has a vacuum to suck up the spirits like a real Ghostbuster. The vacuum works by using your imagination, but each wing contains working flick-fire missiles. The planes propeller really spins to simulate flying and the landing gear is made of TECHNIC pieces.

Haunted House

Item #: 10228

Released: 2012

Ages: 14+

Pieces: 2,064

Minifigures:

  1. Lord Vampyre

  2. Vampyre’s Bride

  3. Zombie Chef

  4. Butler

  5. Ghost (2)

LEGO has designed a lot of houses in their history, but this would be their first haunted mansion. The building stands at 15.5” (39cm) high, 9.4” (24cm) wide and 7.5” (19cm) deep and contains 2,064 pieces, making it the largest building set in the Monster Fighters theme. There are no monster hunter minifigures in this set, but there are no Moonstones for them to chase after either. This is Lord Vampyre’s humble abode and he does not take work home with him.

There is a small wall with an opening gate that is not attached to the house. It can be moved into whatever position you desire. The house itself is three stories tall and can be opened up to reveal six rooms. (Entrance Hall, Kitchen, Office, Bedroom, Potion Room and Music Room) Don’t let the crooked shutters and boarded up windows fool you, it was designed that way on purpose. The rooms are nicely decorated with objects that have working doors, like an old-style stove, chest and cabinet. A staircase on the top floor can be lowered by pulling a hidden lever located in the Chimney. The Zombie chef and butler minifigures are only available in this set.

The Mummy

Item #: 9462

Released: 2012

Ages: 7-14

Pieces: 90

Minifigures:

  1. Mummy

  2. Ann Lee

Ann Lee chases down the Mummy on her autogyro. She hopes this small helicopter will be fast enough to overtake the chariot being pulled by a skeleton horse, so she can capture the Purple Eye of Horus Moonstone.

The autogyro has two joysticks for the minifigure to use as controls and the propeller is connected to TECHNIC parts, so it can be rotated to simulate flying. The chariot’s wheels move, but the horses legs do not. You can pretend the horse is floating through the air like a Thestral. The skeleton horse is from the same mold used for the Castle theme released in 2007, but now LEGO used glow in the dark plastic. While the Mummy stand on the back of the Chariot, the Moonstone sits on a golden scorpion strapped to the horse’s saddle.

The Swamp Creature

Item #: 9461

Released: 2012

Ages: 7-14

Pieces: 70

Minifigures:

  1. Swamp Creature

  2. Frank Rock

Frank Rock must go deep into the marshlands to find the Green Seaweed Moonstone. Frank’s swamp boat will have to be fast, if he is going to steal the stone from the Swamp Creature.

The Swamp Creature’s piece of marsh is a very small LEGO model. It is basically a glorified stand for the Moonstone, while your minifigures battle it out. To give it some life, they used flat transparent green pieces to create the illusion of slime and added some small animal studs. The Swamp Boat is the real model of the set. It has two flick-fire missiles, a spinning rotor, and two joystick controllers.

This would be one of only two sets that did not contain any glow in the dark bricks in its design (Moonstones don’t count.) and was the only set to include the Swamp Creature.

The Vampyre Castle

Item #: 9468

Released: 2012

Ages: 9-14

Pieces: 949

Minifigures:

  1. Lord Vampyre

  2. Vampyre’s Bride

  3. Manbat (2)

  4. Skeleton

  5. Dr. Rodney Rathbone

  6. Jack McHammer

The Castle is the scene for our final showdown between good and evil. Lord Vampyre has acquired six of the seven Moonstones. (The set does not come with the Zombie Moonstone.) It is up to Rodney Rathbone and Jack McHammer to prevent him from forever eclipsing the sun and enveloping the world in an eternal night.

The monster fighters race to the scene in their green car. Actually, the car only fits one minifigure, so one of them is going to have to run. The car has two guns mounted on the front and a working net launcher. The net can be fired automatically by pushing a button in the back.

Vampyre’ Castle is comprised of several large section to create a structure standing 18” (45cm) high, 11” (28cm) wide and 10” (26cm) deep. The Castle takes up more physical space than the LEGO Haunted House 10228 model, but this is due to its large spires and spread out design. The Castle uses less than half as many pieces in its assembly and was designed for play, not display. The front gate bars swing in both directions and one of its pillars is equipped with a flick-fire spider (missile). If that doesn’t stop the intruders, perhaps the sharp spikes directly behind the gate will. The far left tower is the shortest of the three and has two floors. The first floor is a prison and the second floor has a skeleton handcuffed to a chain. The chain can be raised and lowered by using a wheel on the outside of the tower. The outside wall also has a TECHNIC pole that the Man Bat can hang upside down from. The middle tower is the second largest and has three floors. The second floor contains a trapdoor that can be sprung to drop a minifigure down into the first floor, which contains deadly spikes. The third floor of the middle tower is an open space that can be used to store treasures, potions or other small LEGO items. At the very top of the right and largest tower is where the Moonstones are being kept. Six Moonstones are connected to a TECHNIC spoked wheel that allows the stones to stick forward or fold back by using a knob in the back of the tower. The castle’s main body is connected with hinges so that it can be folded into different positions. The front of the castle is closed off, while the back is left open to play with all the fun features. Some of the other entertaining aspects of the castle are a working catapult for flinging small objects, secret entrances, a coffin chamber, musical organ and stairs. The two Monster Fighter Manbat minifigures were only included in this building set.

The Vampyre Hearse

Item #: 9464

Released: 2012

Ages: 8-14

Pieces: 314

Minifigures:

  1. Lord Vampyre

  2. Zombie Driver

  3. Dr. Rodney Rathbone

As Lord Vampyre races back to his castle with the Red Bat Moonstone, Dr. Rodney Rathbone is in hot pursuit.

Lord Vampyre’s Hearse Car is is driven by his Zombie Chauffeur. Although there is enough room for two people in the cab of the car, Vampyre has a huge ego and prefers to ride in his throne coffin on top. The coffin seat can also launch Vampyre at his enemies by pushing the levers on both sides of the herse. For traveling in the daylight, Vampyre’s coffin can be put in the back of the hearse. The Red Bat Moonstone is place prominently on the front of the car like a hood ornament.

Dr. Rodney’s motorcycle does not come with as many features as Vampyre’s hearse, but it is fast and does the job. You can tell its fast by the flames jetting out the tailpipes. The back seat has a rack to hold his revolver or dynamite, so he can concentrate on driving and using his sword as a lance.

The Werewolf

Item #: 9463

Released: 2012

Ages: 7-14

Pieces: 243

Minifigures:

  1. Werewolf

  2. Major Quinton Steele

Armed with his blunderbuss, Major Quinton Steele drives his hot rod off into the Drachwalk Forest. He is out hunting for the elusive Werewolf and the Orange Wolf Moonstone. However, the Werewolf has set his own trap for the major.

The tree is the largest part of the set and the location of our scene. The Moonstone is prominently displayed as bait under the tree on a pedestal decorated in bones. The Werewolf minifigure stands on top of the tree, where a catapult is hidden behind the leaves. A lever on the back of the tree can be pressed to send the Werewolf flying at his victim, with his claws extended. They are the same claws used for Wolverine in the Superhero theme, but made of glow in the dark plastic.

Major Steele’s hot rod has two large wheels in the back and smaller ones in the front, this adds to the off road feel of the car. As a hunter, Steele has a place on the side of the car to hold his large blunderbuss and four holsters in the engine to place pistols. Although the Major likes to stand while driving, minifigures can actually sit down in front of the wheel to drive.

The Zombies

Item #: 9465

Released: 2012

Ages: 8-14

Pieces: 447

Minifigures:

  1. Zombie Bride

  2. Zombie Groom

  3. Zombie Driver

  4. Jack McHammer

Jack McHammer enters a graveyard looking for the Pink Zombie Arm Moonstone. To escape the cemetery, he must avoid the zombies popping out of their graves.

The graveyard is represented by two coffins and a crypt. A cauldron inside the crypt can be catapulted, with all of its deadly contents, at grave robbers by pushing down on a lever in the back. While most sets have the Moonstone for bait or decoration, this set incorporates it into the mechanics of the model. By turning the Moonstone, the two coffin lids pop open and reveal the zombies inside. The Zombie Bride and Groom can only be found in this set, it is up to you if you want to separate them in death.

Of all the Monster Fighter vehicles, Jack’s comes with the most monster fighting power. This heavily fortified truck has four flick-fire missiles and a swinging hammer for taking out the walking dead and other creatures that prowl the night.

This set was originally going to come with a Voodoo Doctor, but it was changed to a Zombie Bride and Groom for its release. Perhaps LEGO was trying to capitalize on the zombie craze that has proven successful in television, film, literature and video games. Sadly, this set would only be available for 5 months before being discontinued.

Nice overview of these limited LEGO collections. They look great especially the vampire / werewolf / zombie ones!
