LEGO Prince of Persia Building Set List

Prince of Persia was originally planned as a long running theme. These building sets belong to the sub-theme The Sands of Time and were based on the Walt Disney Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time movie. However, the $200,000,000 movie based on a video game only did $90,000,000 domestically and was panned by critics. With no planned movie sequels, LEGO discontinued the theme before anymore sub-themes were created.

The six building sets were based on scenes found in the movie, but a lot of liberties were taken in their designs. The larger sets utilized exposed studs on the vertical surfaces, so the heavy use of wall running action sequences in the movie could be replicated by the minifigures.

The movie was a box office bomb, but the theme proved popular among LEGO fans. The ostrich and camel were introduced in this series and added to the growing LEGO animal kingdom. It was also the first sets to use off brown coloring for LEGO bricks.

Fun Facts

As a fun cross promotion, the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con placed a Jack Sparrow minifigure in the Prince of Persia display. Pirates of the Caribbean and Prince of Persia are both Jerry Bruckheimer productions.

Although the theme was officially released on April 26, 2010, the Canadian Toys "Я" Us accidentally put several of the sets up for sale through their website on February 10, but had them removed the following day.

Battle of Alamut

Item #: 7573

Year: 2010

Ages: 8-14

Pieces: 821

Minifigures:

  1. Dastan

  2. Seso

  3. Gool

  4. Nizam

  5. Tamah

  6. Alamut Guard (2)

The real Alamut was an almost impenetrable mountain fortress in northern Iran. In 1090, it was taken over by Hassan-i Sabbah, who is known for forming the Hashshashins Order/The Assassins. The movie has Alamut being a holy city within a valley surrounded by natural water sources and lush greenery. It's mystical background and peaceful nature have kept it safe from invasion.

The building set focuses on the city's palace and fortified walls. The double door gate can be opened or closed and is set between two guard towers. The towers are connected by a walkway over the gate. The walkway has a stand that tilts to dump the boiling oil/transparent neon orange cones over the edge. The towers are each armed with a working catapult, that rotate to cover more area. The walls are about 7 bricks high and designed to have minifigures parkour along the sides. The right wall has tile bricks that can be pushed out to create stairs on either side. The opposite wall has a section that can be knocked out to create falling debris. The walls can either encircle the complex or open up. When opened, the model stretches 17 inches long.

The two story palace stands over 8" tall. The inside is divided into six rooms. The side rooms on the first floor have pedestals with golden art. The center room has a circular stand with a ruby on top. Pulling up on the gem will reveal the Dagger of Time hidden below. The top floor has Nizam's throne room, an armory, and a large room looking out into the courtyard.

A ballista cart is armed with flick-fire missiles and can be moved easily with its two wheels. This was also one if the two sets to have the LEGO camels.

Dagger Trap

Item #: 20017

Year: 2010

Ages: 6+

Pieces: 49

Minifigures:

  1. Dastan

This BrickMaster set came exclusively with the LEGO Magazine. Rather than being based on a scene from the movie, it was inspired by the original video game. The set included an unstable staircase, complete with collapsing step. To add even more peril, as Dastan attempts to retrieve the Dagger of Time, deadly snakes are below. Dastan was only given one sword and is not wearing his iconic double sword holder.

Desert Attack

Item #: 7569

Year: 2010

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 67

Minifigures:

  1. Dastan

  2. Ghazab

  3. Setam

  4. Skeleton

The box description gives the impression of a larger model, but the name says it all. The desert scene does not incorporate any giant structures. There is a small desert colored hiding spot equipped with two spears and a catapult. To show the dangers of the desert, there are a snake, scorpion and skeleton to scatter about your play area. A royal horse lets Dastan travel quickly through the harsh desert.

The Fight For The Dagger

Item #: 7571

Year: 2010

Ages: 7-12

Pieces: 258

Minifigures:

  1. Dastan

  2. Princess Tamina

  3. Asoka

  4. Market Seller

A lot of liberties were taken, from a relatively short action sequence in the movie, to create this building set. The biggest being that Princess Tamina was not in scene and the chase happened in the market streets, not on the roof tops.

A stairway leads up the wall and to the second floor of a tower. The tower has several obstacles, including a trap door and a collapsing balcony. There are a couple pieces to represent the marketplace below. A market cart, jewels and fish can all be used to aid or hinder Dastan. This set also includes one of the first LEGO camels.

The Ostrich Race

Item #: 7570

Year: 2010

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 169

Minifigures:

  1. Dastan

  2. Ostrich Jockey

  3. Sheik Amar

LEGO changed the backstory of this set to make it more kid friendly. Dastan finds himself in the Valley of the Slaves and in the presence of his former mentor Sheik Amar. Instead of sanctuary, he is forced into a deadly ostrich race. While LEGO has the minifigures riding the ostriches, the film had them running away from these gigantic birds before being trampled to death.

The watch tower stands over 4" tall and lets the minifigures get a good view of the race. There is a small weapons rack to store the racers equipment, if they don't want to hold it. The last model is the ostriches stables/racing gate. A pulley system in the back allows the gates to be opened and release the ostriches.

The draw to this set were the first ever LEGO ostriches. These birds stand 2" tall and have four lowered studs. This allowed a minifigure to either sit or stand while riding the animal.

Quest Against Time

Item #: 7572

Year: 2010

Ages: 7-12

Pieces: 506

Minifigures:

  1. Dastan

  2. Princess Tamina

  3. Nizam

  4. Zolm

This set focused on the end of the film, where Nizam has acquired the Dagger of Time and is about to unleash its power. The model looks like an ancient temple, but is designed like a 13" long obstacle course. The minifigures have to avoid spinning saw blades, swinging swords, trap doors, red snakes and other perils as they attempt to reach the Sands of Time. As a reward, the Sands of Time will light up when the Dagger of Time is inserted into a slot.

LEGO Mini-Movie

The Prince of Persia Mini-Movie was aired May 7, 2010 on Disney XD. It was used to promote both the LEGO theme and the movie. The animated short was voiced by the star of the theatrical film Jake Gyllenhaal.

The Movie

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is based on the story arc of the video game by the same name released in 2003. As a small child, Dastan was taken off the streets and adopted by royalty. When he is accused of killing King Sharaman, he flees the city and must not only clear his name but also unravel the conspiracy to invade the Holy City of Alamut. At the center of it all is the Sands of Time and its power to control the world.

I am glad you enjoyed the film and are proud to admit it. I find we all have those movies we love, but have other people give us a double take. :)

I had no idea they made lego sets based on that movie. I actually enjoyed it (despite the consensus among critics). But it helps that I was a huge fan of the video game series. It's hard to make a time travel movie that I dislike.
