LEGO Star Wars 1999

Updated on April 3, 2014

In 1999 Lego would release their popular Star Wars line for the first time. It would also be the first time Lego created sets based on a licensed theme from another company's intellectual property. This proved to be an extraordinary successful partnership between LEGO and George Lucas. Star Wars would be releasing the first prequel, Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, this year and Lego was there to do some cross marketing.

Anakin’s Podracer

Item #: 7131
Affiliation: Episode I
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 136
Minifigures:

  1. Anakin Skywalker (Young)
  2. Padme Amidala
  3. Pit Droid (Anakin’s)

Nobody can forget the podracer that Anakin built as a small child. After all, not many humans can compete in these races. They are very fast, very dangerous, and very very very looonnngg. Although this set could be bought individually, it was also included in the three sets packaged together for the exclusive Zellers Value Pack in Canada.

Item #: 7111
Affiliation: Episodes I-III
Ages: 6-10
Pieces: 62
Minifigures: 0

Droid Fighters are pilotless starfighters that were controlled by a droid brain. This is probably why they decided to not include a Lego minifigure in this building set. This Droid Fighter is the Variable Geometry Self-Propelled Battle Droid, Mark I or as it is more commonly know the Vulture Droid. This would be the only set in which the Vulture Droid would be sold individually. It would also be included with the Zellers Value Pack.

Item #: 7161
Affiliation: Episode I
Ages: 612
Pieces: 379
Minifigures:

  1. Qui-Gon Jinn
  2. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan)
  3. Jar Jar Binks

To be more specific this Gungan Sub is a Tribubble Bongo. In the Star Wars Universe these subs are made individually, so each one is unique. Which is a good thing because LEGO took a lot of liberties when they designed this set. Instead of everyone sitting in one cockpit, there are three separate cockpits that can detach into their own individual sections. According to Gui-Gon Jinn there is always a bigger fish, but in this set you get a manta ray. I am not sure what a manta ray is doing on Naboo but it is a lot less intimidating than an Opee Sea Killer or Sando Aqua Monster.

Item #: 7101
Affiliation: Episode I
Ages: 6-10
Pieces: 52
Minifigures:

  1. Qui-Gon Jinn
  2. Darth Maul

This Lego set recreates the first time we got to witness Darth Maul in lightsaber wielding action. In order to make it more than two minifigures packaged together, the box comes with Darth Maul’s Speeder Bike and a moisture vaporator. Since this is a Lego set, the pieces to the moisture vaporator can also be made into a vehicle for Qui-Gon to ride. It is only fair to even out the odds. The Darth Maul minifigure has a one bladed lightsaber because the double blade had not been revealed to audiences yet.

Item #: 7110
Affiliation: Episode I
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 49
Minifigures:

  1. Luke Skywalker
  2. Ben Kenobi

This Lego set lets you build Luke Skywalker’s X-34 Landspeeder from the first Star Wars film. Unlike Luke’s landspeeder that was in low demand after the X-38 came out, this model would retain its value, since it is the first of several versions to be released by LEGO. Yes, the 2004 version would be sleeker and the 2010 would have more minifigures but you can’t beat an original.

Ages: 8-12
Pieces: 896
Minifigures:

  2. Gasgano
  3. Sebulba
  4. Pit Droids (3)
  5. R2-D2
  6. Qui-Gon Jinn
  7. Padme Amidala
  8. Jar Jar Binks

With 896 pieces, 7 minifigures and 3 pit droids this would be the largest Star Wars set released in 1999. To replicate the infamous podrace, this set comes with Anakin’s, Gasgano’s and Sebulba’s podracers. A stabilizing bar connecting the pods and the energy couplings had to be added to the design to hold them together. They were made the color of sand to be less obvious. Although I have not built this set, I imagine the bars can be left out if you do not plan on playing with them.

Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 179
Minifigures:

  1. Anakin Skywalker (Young)
  2. R2-D2
  3. Battle Droids (2)

The Royal N-1 Starfighter was the pinnacle of the Naboo military at the end of the Galactic Republic. It could serve as a defense, patrol, or escort ship. With such fame and versatility, it was simply known as the Naboo Starfighter. This Lego sets comes with battle droids for Anakin to overkill with this the starfighter's laser beams or you can have him take out the Death Star...I mean a droid control ship with a proton torpedo.

Minifigures:

  1. Qui-Gon Jinn
  2. Jar Jar Binks
  3. Battle Droids (2)

This set recreates the action sequence in which Qui-Gon Jinn and Jar Jar Binks were being chased by the Trade Federation's droid army. The set includes two battle droids with their own Single Trooper Aerial Platforms (STAP) and a swamp to chase our two heroes. OK, one hero and a buffoon.

Item #: 7151
Affiliation: Episode I
Ages: 8-12
Pieces: 244
Minifigures:

  1. Darth Maul

Darth Maul’s personal starship was a Scimitar prototype stealth-ship. Being flown by a “Sith” apprentice to the “Sith” lord, Darth Sidious, it became known as the Sith Infiltrator. Fans watching the movie could not help but notice a similarity to the TIE fighters from the original trilogy. Three Sith Probe Droids and Darth Maul’s speeder were also included in this set.

Item #: 7130
Affiliation: Episode V
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 215
Minifigures:

  1. Luke Skywalker (Pilot)
  2. Dack Ralter
  3. Rebel Hoth Soldier

The T-47 airspeeder was originally designed for transporting industrial cargo, hence the tow cable, but it was heavily modified by the Rebels Alliance for patrolling and combat. Although it was used in all kinds of terrain, it became known as a snowspeeder after its famous use in the Battle on Hoth. Not many lightly armed vehicles can take out an Imperial AT-AT. This set would also include a turret for backup.

Item #: 7128
Affiliation: Episode VI
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 93
Minifigures:

  1. Luke Skywalker (Endor)
  2. Scout Troopers (2)

With two speeder bikes and a tree, this set has it all. Since this is a Lego set you can easily run a speeder into the tree and have it exploded into a million (93) pieces. The 74-Z Speeder Bike is probably the most well known speeder bike since it was heavily used by the Galactic Empire for scouting and rapid transport.

Item #: 7150
Affiliation: Episodes IV
Ages: 8-12
Pieces: 409
Minifigures:

  1. Darth Vader
  2. Dutch Vander
  3. Astromech Droid (Red)

This Lego set is mislabeled since it is really a Y-Wing and Vader’s TIE Advanced Fighter. This is fine, since Vader’s TIE was so much more advanced than a regular TIE Fighter. With two full sized Star Wars fighters, this set allows you to have a space battle right away and not be forced to buy any more additional sets. Let’s be honest, few Star Wars fans can stop at just one.

Item #: 7140
Affiliation: Episodes IV-VI
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 266
Minifigures:

  1. Luke Skywalker (Pilot)
  2. Biggs Darklighter
  3. Rebel Mechanic
  4. R2-D2

As the most famous starfighter in the Rebel Alliance fleet, it should come as no surprise that this set appeared on the front of the LEGO catalogue and was the first Star Wars set to be released by LEGO. The set had a utility train with six tool, in case it needed some repairs. It also included a comic at the end of the instruction booklet that had Luke Skywalker crashing on Dagobah. However, rather than Yoda lifting his fighter out of the Swamp, it was Biggs and the Rebel Mechanic who saved him. It’s about time Biggs got some credit. His main scene was cut from the original release and it did not get put back in with the re-edited version years later. Poor Biggs Darklighter.

They really have. I particularly like the use of flesh tone for the Minifigures instead of the LEGO yellow.

I can't help but think of the Speeder Bike level in the Lego Star Wars video game. That level took forever to collect all the canisters.
