LEGO Star Wars 2002

Updated on September 25, 2013

2002 would see a huge jump in the number of Star Wars sets released. Star Wars: Episode 2 - Attack of the Clones was coming out and the cross promotion was in full swing. Movie fans were hoping for a better movie and LEGO was looking forward to not having to create so many podracer sets.

Bounty Hunter Pursuit

Item #: 7133
Affiliation: Episode II
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 259
Minifigures:

  1. Obi-Wan Kenobi
  2. Anakin Skywalker
  3. Zam Wessell

This set recreates the chase sequence in Attack of the Clones when Obi-Wan and Anakin are chasing the bounty hunter Zam Wessell through the city of Coruscant. The Coruscant airspeeder has two hatches that can open and close; the back hatch was used for cargo, while the front hatch housed the engine. Zam Wesell's airspeeder had a working cockpit and to make a crash sequence more thrilling, detachable wings. This set would also contain the first Zam Wesell minifigure.

Item #: 7139
Affiliation: Episode VI
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 121
Minifigures:

  1. Paploo
  2. Wicket
  3. Scout Trooper
  4. Stormtrooper

With three models in one box set, it went a long way in recreating the Battle of Endor. The Empire side came with two Imperial troopers and a speeder bike, while the rebel side had two Ewoks, a catapult and glider. The sides may not seem to be evenly matched but it was the Ewoks who were crucial to the fall of the Empire.

Final Duel 1

Item #: 7200
Affiliation: Episode VI
Ages: 6-12
Pieces: 31
Minifigures:

  1. Darth Vader
  2. Emperor Palpatine

This could have been a mini building set. The only model to be built is the Emperor’s throne, aboard the Death Star II. Darth Vader having both his hands means that this was not the final duel of the movie. You could simply remove his hand to correct this error, but the box is a bit misleading.

Item #: 7201
Affiliation: Episode VI
Ages: 6-12
Pieces: 26
Minifigures:

  1. Luke Skywalker (Jedi)
  2. Imperial Officer
  3. Stormtrooper

Final Duel II was even smaller than the first set. It was meant to complement the previous model but recreates an entirely different scene. Rather than the final showdown between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, this set creates the scene in which Luke surrenders to the Empire before meeting his father. On a positive note, his would be the first set to include the Imperial Officer minifigure.

Jango Fett Slave I

Item #: 7153
Affiliation: Episode II
Ages: 8-12
Pieces: 360
Minifigures:

  1. Jango Fett
  2. Boba Fett (Young)

LEGO would release several versions of the Slave I. For a ship with so little screen time, it has garnered a lot of attention because of its famous owners. For this model the emphasis would be on its weaponry; rotating twin laser cannons on the bottom, hidden quad laser cannons under the wing joints and three sonic mines in the rear of the ship. This LEGO set is ready to chase down a Jedi starfighter, through an asteroid field, without hesitation.

Item #: 7203
Affiliation: Episode I
Ages: 6-12
Pieces: 111
Minifigures:

  1. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Padawan)
  2. Droidekas (2)

Most of the LEGO sets this year would focus on the original trilogy or recently released Episode 2. The Jedi Defense series would reference Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. This set pits Obi-Wan against the well shielded Droidekas. The Droidekas are listed as minifigures but they are the models being built. These droids are larger than regular minifigures and contain a lot more pieces.

Affiliation: Episode I
Ages: 6-12
Pieces: 53
Minifigures:

  1. Qui-Gon Jinn
  2. Battle Droid Commander
  3. Security Battle Droid

This LEGO set would have Qui-Gon square off against two battle droids. With a door that opens and closes, this could turn into a sneak attack or a tactical retreat. This would be the first time a Security Battle Droid and Battle Droid Commander would be included in a set. These battle droid minifigures would have markings on their heads and torsos, making them a closer resemblance to their movie counterparts than future designs.

Minifigures:

  1. Yoda
  2. Count Dooku

Finally a Jedi Duel with two Jedis fighting! This would be the first time Yoda and Count Dooku would be included in a LEGO building set. Dooku’s speeder would be built with tradition LEGO linking pieces but the crane would incorporate technic joining pieces in its design.

Jedi Starfighter

Item #: 7143
Affiliation: Episodes II & III
Ages: 8-12
Pieces: 139
Minifigures:

  1. Obi-Wan Kenobi

The Delta-7 Jedi Aethersprite-Class Light Interceptor was a very advanced and expensive starfighter used by the Jedi, shortly before and during the Clone Wars. Known as the Jedi Starfighter, audiences were first introduced to this ship in Episode II, when Obi-Wan was investigating the clones on Kamino. This model creates Obi-Wan’s personal starfighter and would be the first set to have a curved canopy for the cockpit. There were also a pair of binoculars included in this set, which references a scene that did not make it into the final edit of the movie.

Item #: 7163

Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 693
Minifigures:

  1. Clone Troopers (4)
  2. Jedi Knight (Bob)
  3. Super Battle Droids (2)
  4. Droideka

This would be the first Republic Gunship LEGO released. Future versions would require more pieces and have more details, but that did not stop this set from having fun interactive features. The top and bottom sections could be detached and the front opened up to a medical recovery center. A handy thing to have when LEGO minifigures fall apart. The adjustable pod-turrets, gun rack and opening side door made it more than a mobile triage, but an attack vehicle.

Item #: 7152
Affiliation: Episode IV
Ages: 8-12
Pieces: 410
Minifigures:

  1. Darth Vader
  2. Dutch Vander
  3. Astromech Droid

This set was a re-release from the first LEGO Star Wars series in 1999. The only change would be item number 7152 replacing the number 7150 on the box. If you missed the original release, this was your chance to get Vader’s Advanced Tie Fighter and Dutch Vander’s Y-Wing Fighter.

Item #: 7113

Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 93
Minifigures:

  1. Anakin Skywalker (Padawan)
  2. Tusken Raiders (2)

When Anakin senses his mom in trouble, he rashly jumps on a speeder bike and attempts to rescue her. The horrific outcome of these events would soon send Anakin on a path to the darkside. The set includes a red speeder bike and moisture vaporator. This would be the first set to include a Tusken Raider minifigure and have a padawan Anakin Skywalker with a cape.

Item #: 7119
Affiliation: Episode V
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 118
Minifigures:

  1. Lobot

The Twin-Pod Cloud Cars were used by the security force on Cloud City. This model has two functional cockpits for two LEGO minifigures. Although Lobot never flew in these Cloud City police cars, he was the most memorable character from Cloud City, who didn’t appear in any other settings. They had to find some way to work in his minifigure.

Item #: 7142
Affiliation: Episode IV
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 267
Minifigures:

  1. Luke Skywalker (Pilot)
  2. Biggs Darklighter
  3. Rebel Mechanic
  4. R2-D2

This is another re-release from the first LEGO Star Wars series in 1999. Again the only change would be item number 7142 replacing the number 7140 on the box. If you are a collector who has to buy every set that come out, you are well on your way to completely recreating the Battle of Yavin in Star Wars: A New Hope.

Product Collection Set

The Product Collection Sets are usually a collection of individual LEGO building sets packaged together. LEGO sets are not cheap, but this can be a way to get several sets at the same time and save a little money. Sometimes these sets can be exclusives for particular stores, adding to their collector value.

Item #: 65153
Affiliation: Episode II
Ages: 8-12
Pieces: 360
Minifigures:

  1. Jango Fett
  2. Boba Fett (Young)

The same Jango Fett Slave 1 released this year was repackaged into a Collectors Set by adding a Cargo Case. This is not a carbonite case to transport a precious bounty in suspended animation, that would be included with Jango’s cloned son. This was a solid black LEGO carrying case with LEGO Star Wars imprinted on the side.

R2-D2 / C-3PO Droid

Item #: 65081
Affiliation: Episodes I-VI
Ages: 7-12
Pieces: 581
Minifigures: None

This Product Collection Set was a United States Toys “R” Us exclusive. Although the set itself was limited, both figures were widely distributed and sold separately in the LEGO Technic toy line. R2-D2 #8009 was sold this year and the C-3PO #8007 was released the previous year.

X-Wing, Tie and Y-Wing

Item #: 65145
Affiliation: Episode IV
Ages: 8+
Pieces: 677
Minifigures:

  1. Darth Vader
  2. Luke Skywalker (Pilot)
  3. Biggs Darklighter
  4. Dutch Vander
  5. Rebel Mechanic
  6. R2-D2
  7. R4 Astromech Droid

With three starfighters in one building set, you can recreate the final space battle from Star Wars: A New Hope. Although, since this set comes with Darth Vader and two of the rebel pilots he shot down in the Death Star trench, this scene does not have to have a happy ending. It all depends on who you decide to put in the cockpits.

Mini Building Sets

The Mini Building Sets are simple to build and have fewer pieces. They are cheaper than regular sized sets but lack the details found in larger models.

Darth Vader

Item #: 8010
Affiliation: Episodes IV-VI
Ages: 9+
Pieces: 400
Minifigures: None

Technic sets are supposed to be a more interactive version of the LEGO building sets, but this Darth Vader was designed more for display than play. Levers on the back could lower and raise his arms. Most of the articulation was found in the left hand, with fingers that could open and close. The head could also be tilted. This allowed for a variety of display possess but not for an epic lightsaber duel.

Tie Fighter

Item #: 3219
Affiliation: Episodes IV-VI
Ages: 7+
Pieces: 12
Minifigures: None

The Tie Fighter Mini Building Set was a promotional set that could only be purchased if customers bought a Product Collection Set that included three mini vehicles. To acquire this item by itself, a person had to subscribe to one of several fan magazine, be either a LEGO/Star Wars club member, or be lucky enough to be in a locations that was giving them away for free. A transparent LEGO piece was used for the cockpit instead of a solid color.

Ultimate Collector Series

The Ultimate Collector Series are for the big kids. These massive building sets contain lots of pieces to create an extremely detailed model. They take up a lot more space but are much more impressive than your typical LEGO sets. It won’t make you look “cool”, but can be a great conversation starter.

Imperial Star Destroyer

Item #: 10030
Affiliation: Episodes IV-VI
Ages: 16+
Pieces: 3,104
Minifigures: None

The Imperial Star Destroyers were used by the empire to keep individual star systems in line. Their fire power could level a planet and their size only added to their intimidation. These monstrous starships made a direct assault appear suicidal. This UCS would have the largest dimension of any LEGO set until the Death Star II was released three years later. There was a scaled Rebel Blockade Runner on a stand included in the set, so you could appreciate the size difference or create your own chase sequence.

Naboo Starfighter

Item #:10026
Affiliation: Episode I
Ages: 9+
Pieces: 187
Minifigures: None

The N-1 starfighters were the pride of the Naboo military. These swift fighters were responsible for the defense of Naboo. As the workhorse of their fleet, they were used for defense, patrol and escort duties. Anakin Skywalker was in a Naboo Starfighter when he destroyed the Trade Federation Control Ship. Requiring less than 200 pieces, this would be one of the smallest UCS released. However, remember that it was Star Wars that taught us “size matters not.”

Lego Star Wars Yoda 7194 Box

Lego Star Wars Yoda 7194 Assembled

Yoda

Item #: 7194
Affiliation: Episodes I-III & V-VI
Ages: 14+
Pieces: 1,075
Minifigures: None

With slightly over 1,000 pieces, this incredibly detailed figure of Yoda, would be one of the few Ultimate Collector Series sets to create a character from the Star Wars Universe. It would be the first to include the whole body and not just the bust. A turntable between the head and shoulders allows the head to be rotated into different positions. Yoda’s short stature and immense power made him an ideal character to turn into a larger building set. This Jedi Master sat on the council and can now sit on your table.

Technic Sets

Technic sets don’t use the Standard LEGO bricks. Instead they are made of beams, connectors, gears, axles and pins that allow the models to move around and take on different poses.

Item #: 8011
Affiliation: Episode II
Ages: 9+
Pieces: 429
Minifigures: None

Although Technic sets are supposed to be possible, Jango lacks a lot of details. The waist, neck, shoulders, wrists and fingers are movable but the arms and legs are stiff. The rocket launcher on his backpack does fire as he leans forward but holding his two pistols is a little awkward. You could also paint the blue pieces green and pretend he is Boba Fett.

R2-D2 may not have been the most flexible droid, but he had lots of gadgets and moving parts that rarely get fully articulated in the toys and almost never in the LEGO minifigures. The technic set was able to bring R2-D2 to life. The head can turn 360 degrees and the feet have wheels to allow our little droid to move around. The front leg can be manually retracted and a button can be pushed to release it. One of Artoo’s front panels contains an arm that can be controlled from the back to go in and out. The front eye comes in blue or red, so you can pretend a hologram is being projected.

Super Battle Droid

Item #: 8012
Affiliation: Episodes II-III
Ages: 9+
Pieces: 381
Minifigures: None

The B2 Super Battle Droids were more durable than the common B1 Battle Droids. These bulky robots packed quite a punch but were vulnerable in close quarter combat. This Technic set recreated the Super Battle Droid with posable arms and legs. They placed blasters on both arms, rather than only on the right, as they were designed in the movies. Both blaster arms could be made to extend while the arm rotated.

I am glad they stopped making the Technic Stat Wars sets. They always looked strange to me.
