LEGO Star Wars Christmas: 8083 Rebel Trooper Battle Pack

Updated on October 29, 2013

The LEGO Star Wars 8083 Rebel Trooper Battle Pack is a set released in 2010, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back! In this set, we have Rebel Snowspeeder pilot Zev Senesca, who have somehow miraculously survived without a scratch after being shot down, joining forces with Rebel Troopers to take on the invading Imperial Forces.

This set has 79 pieces including a Rebel Ice Cutting Combat Speeder, and 4 minifigures - Rebel pilot Zev Senesca, a Hoth Rebel Officer and 2 Hoth Rebel Troopers.

Ice Cutting Combat Speeder

Though unfamiliar to most of us, this vehicle is actually movie accurate, it appeared briefly in an Echo Base hangar scene together with the Snowspeeders, probably too briefly for it to register in the minds of most movie goers. Somehow, LEGO managed to coax Lucasfilm to provide more details so as to be able to create this vehicle out of that scene.

The Ice Cutting Combat Speeder or Ice Cutter measures over 4inch (10cm) long and is armed with two flick-fire missiles on either side and a rotating twin laser cannon on top.
The great thing about this vehicle is that it is sturdily built and has been know to survive unscathed from a drop of a few feet. Which is pretty impressive for a LEGO.

In the middle of the vehicle there is a 2x2 removable storage container which can be used to store supplies and weaponry. There is also a gun holder improvised out of a headlight brick on the left side of the Ice Cutter's driver. Then there is the chair that is designed to hold the driver without having to remove his backpack, which is really a great feature.

Design wise, this vehicle is bulky and boring, but then you are probably buying this set to build your Rebel army to take on the Empire, so you are probably buying multiple sets, with intention to scrap this ice cutter for parts. And talking about parts, there are some good parts to be found in the vehicle, like some nice circular parts, sloping parts, the chair, and the container box.

Minifigs

The Hoth Officer minifigure has a new headgear with goggles, an awesome Rebel-rousing moustache, and is equipped with a blaster pistol. He wears snow colored pants.

The 2 Hoth Rebel Troopers also have the new headgear with goggles, a new torso design, and wears brown colored pants. One of them is equipped with a blaster pistol, the other, a blaster rifle. These little guys are nicely detailed, with expressive faces. They also don't smile like they used to. And this is a good thing, as I don't like to catch them smiling during a firefight with Imperial forces. -_-

Zev Senesca, is the Snowspeeder pilot who successfully located Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, after the snow storm in the opening minutes of The Empire Strikes Back. He was later shot down by Imperial forces during Darth Vader's siege on the ice planet Hoth. However, in this battle pack, he appears to have miraculously survived the incident, and has managed to join forces with Rebel Troopers to slow down the AT-AT's march towards Echo Base.

The good thing about him is that he appears like any other generic pilots, so if you get multiple sets to build your army, just think of him as an ordinary pilots. He is armed with a blaster pistol. Unlike the troopers, he has a printed-on visor, which looked great, until you remove his helmet, which make him look silly. But then, pilots are supposed to have their helmets on to look like pilots, so that should be okay, I guess. Like the troopers, he also has a new torso.

Pros And Cons

Pros:

-Great new minifigs, with Rebel-rousing moustaches
-New helmets and goggles
-The ice breaker is sturdily built, and is great for parts
-Gun holder for driver's gun
-3 pistols 1 rifle; everyone has a gun including the pilot
-No stickers! Yay!

Cons:

-Flick-fire missiles
-The ice breaker, though solidly designed, is bulky
-No controls for the vehicle

Conclusion

While this set has some cons, the pros far outweigh the cons, so no complains here. If you are getting this set, you are probably using this to build your army. And this is where this set excel at, as it has some great parts, and newly reworked minifigs with awesome moustaches. :)

This is one of the faster selling sets because it is affordable, so beat the mad Christmas shopping rush, buy now to avoid disappointment!
