LEGO Super Heroes 2012

Updated on May 5, 2014

2012 was the official launch of the LEGO Super Heroes Theme. Fans would finally see their favorite characters from both Marvel and DC comics come to life in the LEGO universe. For legal reasons, they are broken into subsets of LEGO DC Super Heroes and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. However, I doubt that will stop fans from joining these worlds together.

*The following sets are divided up between their superhero or team affiliation.

(Avengers, Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, X-Men, DC Universe, Marvel Universe)

Avengers

Not only did LEGO Launch their Super Heroes theme, but the Avengers movie would be released in theaters and become a blockbuster success.

Captain America

Item #: 4597

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 44

Minifigures: N/A

This is an Ultrabuild set and was designed to be a buildable action figure. To make Captain America both buildable and have pieces work with other Ultrabuild sets, he was put in an armored suit. He still has his iconic star and stripe shield, but the costume itself was bulkier. This is particularly noticeable with the large pauldrons on his shoulders. When assembled, the figure is over 7” tall. You could combine this set with Iron Man 4529 and build a Captain America with even more powerful armour.

Captain America’s Avenging Cycle

Captain America’s Avenging Cycle

Item #: 6865

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 5-12

Pieces: 72

Minifigures:

  1. Captain America

  2. Chitauri General

  3. Chitauri Foot Soldier

This building set was inspired by the end battle sequence from the Avengers movie, but takes a lot of liberties from the Chitauri invasion.

Captain America did not use the Avenging Cycle in the final battle, but drove a regular black motorcycle. LEGO made Captain America’s Avenging Cycle black with a dark red shell. The bike has a clip in the back, to store Captain America’s shield.

The movie also did not have a ground weapons platform for the aliens. However, LEGO felt they needed one and equipped it with a flick-fire missile. To make the platform more deadly, the flick-fire missile could be angled up or down using a hinged piece in back.

Although air vehicles were used by the invading Chitauri, LEGO gave them a slightly different design. This single passenger craft had wings that could fold up and down. It was also armed with a flick-fire missile underneath.

Despite having three separate pieces, this would be the smallest non-promotional building set from both the DC and Marvel line. It was the only non-promotional LEGO set based on the Avengers movie, that did not include a Loki minifigure. However, it did contain two exclusive figures. The Captain America and Alien General designed for this set were not available anywhere else.

Hawkeye With Equipment

Item #: 30165

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 24

Minifigures:

  1. Hawkeye

This promotional polybag set was given away in the May issue of Donald Duck Magazine and the Sunday edition of The Sun newspaper. The set came with a Hawkeye minifigure and his equipment rack. The rack held a fire extinguisher, binoculars and a walkie-talkie. Oddly enough, the rack does not have a spot for Hawkeye’s signature bow.

Hulk

Item #: 4530

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 39

Minifigures: N/A

When Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk, he towers over most other characters in the Marvel Universe. To make him into a 7” tall Ultrabuild LEGO set was an easy decision. The Hulk is wearing blue pants, instead of his classic purple, and for some reason was given gray pauldrons. It could be a reference to World War Hulk, or maybe LEGO didn’t realize Hulk is practically indestructible. With possible limbs, builders can make sure “Hulk Smash” all the other LEGO minifigures in his way. The set could also be combined with Iron Man 4529 and Captain America 4597, to have the Hulk morph into an even bigger monster.

Hulk

Item #: 5000022

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6+

Pieces: 4

Minifigures:

  1. Hulk (Comic Variant)

The comic book variant Hulk minifigure was given away free to customers who bought a minimum purchase at the LEGO Shop. The promotion ran in the United States from May 16-31, 2012 and required at least $50.00 in merchandise to be bought. The United Kingdom promotion was from May 16-31, 2012 and customers needed to spend £25. While many of the Hulk minifigures at this time were much larger in design, this minifigure had pieces similar to the standard LEGO minifigure. His muscles were drawn on and he is wearing his recognizable torn purple pants. To help show the Hulk’s anger, he was given black eyes with white pupils and his mouth was formed into an expression of rage.

Hulk’s Helicarrier Breakout

Item #: 6868

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 7-14

Pieces: 389

Minifigures:

  1. Hulk

  2. Hawkeye

  3. Thor

  4. Loki

This building set was inspired by the scene from the Avengers movie where a mind controlled Hawkeye destroys the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. In the escalating chaos, Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk, Loki escapes and Agent Phil Coulson is killed.

The set came with two main models. The first section represents rooms within the helicarrier. Several areas were combined to create one scene. The glass prison holding Loki was attached to the lab where Dr. Banner and Tony Stark were studying Loki’s staff. Since this set is about the Hulk breaking out, it’s important to add some features to help “Hulk SMASH!”. There are 4 fuel tanks that can be launched from their storage rack. There is a small command center placed above the prison cell. One of the computer screens in the command room has a Space Invaders sticker on it. This is a reference to the easter egg in the movie where a S.H.I.E.L.D agent in the background is playing Galaga.

The second model is the S.H.I.E.L.D. fighter jet. It measures 7” long, 5” wide and 2” high. The jet has an opening and closing cockpit, so that a minifigure can be placed inside. To highlight its use as a fighter, there are four flick-fire missiles under the wings. To make it more desirable for collectors, the Hulk Avengers variant was exclusive to this set.

Iron Man

Item #: 4529

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 44

Minifigures: N/A

The Iron Man Ultrabuild set was able to take advantage of Tony Stark’s advanced armour and gadgets. The model takes it core design from the classic red and gold suit. This design has Iron Man equipped with a large shoulder blaster, but the long ammo belt attached to the cannon makes it look like something more appropriate for War Machine. The blaster can me moved to replace Iron Man’s hand. Sticking with the LEGO tradition of interchanging parts between sets, Iron Man’s pieces were designed to be combined with the Captain America 4597 and Hulk 4530 Ultrabuild sets.

Item #: LCP2012

Universe: Marvel

Ages: N/A

Pieces: 8

Minifigures:

  1. Captain America

  2. Iron Man

125 lucky people at the 2012 New York Toy Fair were able to get their hands on this extremely rare Marvel Super Heroes promotional giveaway. The two minifigures were both based on the comic books, instead of films, and exclusive to this set. This would be the only Iron Man minifigure to include a printed helmet. The design for Captain America’s shield was unique to this set.

Item #: 6867

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 181

Minifigures:

  1. Hawkeye

  2. Iron Man (Mark 6)

  3. Loki

This building set recreates Loki’s attempt to steal the Tessarect from S.H.I.E.L.D’s underground base. The model has a lot more fun features than, the pickup truck used in the film. To increase its offensive capabilities, there is a flick-fire missile on both sides. The floor in the bed of the truck can be tilted, to launch Loki out the back. Although Iron Man was not in this scene of the movie, Robert Downey Jr. claims that his character was included in the original script. During the New York Toy Fair, LEGO was calling the prototype of this set Loki Escape.

Quinjet

Item #: 30162

Universe: Marvel

Ages: N/A

Pieces: 33

Minifigures: N/A

The Quinjet has been a staple vehicle in the Marvel Universe since 1969. It has gone through many upgrades and alterations since its creation by the Wakanda Design Group, but it is still recognizable by comic fans. It was a great delight for fans to see the Quinjet brought to life in the Avengers movie. Since this airship is very large and capable of carrying several passengers, LEGO released a mini building set. Now fans could enjoy this classic vehicle and not lose an entire shelf to put it on display.

Quinjet Aerial Battle

Item #: 6869

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 7-14

Pieces: 735

Minifigures:

  1. Black Widow

  2. Iron Man (Mark VII)

  3. Thor

  4. Loki

  5. Chitauri Foot Soldier

Although it was Black Widow, Hawkeye and Captain America who flew the Quinjet to New York in their attempt to stop the Chitauri invasion, Black Widow was the only one to make it into the building set.

This set gave fans the chance to build a Quinjet that is an impressive 15” long. Beyond size, it also has a lot of fun features to play with. There are two opening cockpits for minifigures to sit comfortably in, but only one of the hero minifigures included can’t fly on her own. I guess you will just have to buy another LEGO Super Heroes building set. LEGO really should have thought about this ahead of time. To simulate aerial combat and landing, the wing tips and jet engines could be moved into different positions. There is a prison in the center that could squeeze two or three minifigures inside. There is a movable boarding ramp in the back of the jet, and a minijet can be deployed from the bottom by pushing a button located on top. The model was also equipped with 4 flick-fire missiles.

It would not be an aerial battle without another ship to fight, so the set also included the much smaller flying chariot. The front part of the vehicle contains the weapons and is where a Chitauri controls the ship. The back was a simple platform for a minifigure to be carried around in style. The two sections were attached by a slanting piece that could be raised or lowered.

Thor and The Cosmic Cube

Item #: 30163

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 25

Minifigures:

  1. Thor

This polybag set was available in the UK as a promotional give away in a July issue of the Sun newspaper. However, U.S. customers could purchase it at their local Toys “R” Us store. This mini building set was based on a deleted scene from the Avengers movie. The scene had Thor attempting to smash the portal machine, only to be foiled by its shield. This set might not contain a lot of pieces, but LEGO still managed to squeeze in some fun features. A TECHNIC axle inside the rock formation was connected to a lever that could be pushed down, so the rock would wall fall apart and reveal the Cosmic Cube.

Batman

Batman and his colorful rogue gallery of villains are known for their crazy gadgets and vehicles. This makes them perfect for designing LEGO sets around. Perhaps this is why Batman would have the most LEGO DC Super Heroes sets based on his comic book.

The Batcave

Item #: 6860

Universe: DC

Ages: 7-14

Pieces: 690

Minifigures:

  1. Batman

  2. Bruce Wayne

  3. Robin

  4. Poison Ivy

  5. Bane

The Batcave would be the first official Super Heroes theme building set released by LEGO. However, it is the second Batcave produced by them. The Batcave: The Penguin and Mr. Freeze’s Invasion came out in 2006, as part of the LEGO Batman Theme. This set is part of the 2012 line, but some stores got it in stock at the end of 2011. As the first set available to the public for purchase, it is important to go big. The Batcave consisted of three sections standing 8 inches tall and included two vehicles.

The smallest section of the Batcave was the Batprison. The cell was clearly designed to hold Poison Ivy. Three of the walls were made of transparent fluorescent blue pieces and the fourth used similarly colored bars. This prison style is often used to hold Poison Ivy to accommodate her unique plant biology, but the picture scan of Ivy is the real give away that this cage was meant for her. You can put any minifigure in the prison. However, the bars are made to be easily removed for a breakout. That is probably why they equipped the turret on top of the cell with flick-fire missiles and an “ALERT” sign.

The next two sections of the Batcave are taller, because they are raised off the ground using support girders. The smaller of these two structures is jam packed with gadgets. At the very top is the red Batphone for Commissioner Gordon to call Batman. Just below the phone is where Batman stores most of his batgadgets. Next to all of Batman’s gear is a large box with a computerized image of the Batsuit on front. This is actually the “changing chamber” for Bruce Wayne to suit-up in. An axle in the back of the tower activates an elevator that will lower the Bruce Wayne minifigure down into the chamber and then have the Batman minifigure lowered out of the chamber, to give the illusion of instantly changing into his costume.

The second raised platform has more space for the minifigures to move around. The top section contains the Batcomputer. The computer has a seat for the minifigures to use, three control panels and three monitors with images to set the scene. There are two large floor lamps, to help create the feeling of a dark underground cave. This section also contains another turret equipped with flick-fire missiles. The bottom floor of the structure acts as the garage/entrance. Two door halves can be opened to allow vehicles in and out of the facility. Instead of an elevator, the two levels are connected by a staircase.

In addition to the main Batcave, the set also comes with two vehicles. The Batcycle is a simplified version of the Batcycle: Harley Quinn’s Hammer Truck 7886 building set released in 2008, under the Batman Theme. The motorcycle is no longer arched and has lost the batwings in back. This sleeker design still had the flick-fire missiles on the sides. The second vehicle belongs to Bane. His red mole machine has a huge drill that spins in the front used to burrow into the Batcave and free Poison Ivy. To battle Batman and Robin, it is also armed with two flick-fire missiles.

Batman

Item #: 4526

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 40

Minifigures: N/A

The Batman Ultrabuild set was part of the 2012 release, but some stores had it in stock by December 20, 2011. Just in time for the Christmas shopping season. To fit in with the Ultrabuild design, Batman was given a mechanical power suit, instead of his more common batsuit. LEGO used his popular blue and grey color scheme. Rather than give Batman an array of gadgets, this figure comes with two swords that can be combined into a larger batsword. Technically it is not called a batsword, but I wanted to give it a cool name. The figure could be joined with Green Lantern 4528 to create an even more impressive batsuit. At over 8 inches tall, this would be the tallest Super Heroes Ultrabuild set released. He is even bigger than the Hulk, but the extra inch is attributed to the ears on his cowl and not his physical stature.

Batman Jetski

Item #: 30160

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 40

Minifigures:

  1. Batman

There were several way fans could get their hands on this promotional polybag set. People in the UK found it in the May 19, 2012 issue of The Sun / News of the World Promotion. U.S. residents were able to purchase it on the Toys “R” Us website or when they visited LEGOLAND California. LEGO Club members also received a set for their 2012 meeting. The Bat-Jetski has a simple sleek design to help it glide along the water. (Warning: LEGOs DO NOT float!) It is armed with two flick-fire missiles. However, the real selling point is the Batman minifigure and the new mould used for his cowl.

Ages: N/A

Pieces: 45

Minifigures: N/A

The Batmobile mini building set was only available through the May 20, 2012 issue of The Sun / News of the World Promotion. Since this is a UK publication, you will have to buy it second hand if you were not living in England. The Batmobile used for this polybag set was a minikit model and rideable vehicle in the LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes video game.

Batmobile and The Two-Face Chase

Item #: 6864

Universe: DC

Ages: 7-14

Pieces: 531

Minifigures:

  1. Batman

  2. Two-Face

  3. Two -Face Henchman (2)

  4. Guard

To set the scene for this building set, LEGO used a generic bank robbery. The setting might be common, but the three models are jam packed with playable features. The bank building is the smallest of the three models that came in the set. It is a simple tan colored building with a small door on the left and a huge window on the right. Since glass is obviously the strongest material, a green bank vault is stored behind the window. The window was designed to be removed, as if the safe were being ripped out of the building.

Two-Face planned ahead and uses a tow truck, with a working crane, that perfectly fits a latch on top of the safe. Since Two-Face needs to keep with his M.O., the truck is colored with a split orange and purple paint job. Once the vault has been secured, the truck is armed and dangerous for their escape. The orange side has two flick-fire missiles and the purple side has a large laser cannon.

The Batmobile was built for speed. Its slope design and large batwing fins in the back make it look aerodynamic. The flames coming out the back show the speed at which it is traveling. Not to be outdone by Two-Face, the Batmobile is equipped with two flick-fire missiles in the back. Their upward angles give Batman long range capabilities.

There is a lot of fun trivia revolving around the minifigures included in the set. The box depicts Two-Face and his henchman with one flesh toned and one black hand, but all three of these minifigures have all their hands colored in a flesh tone. The Two-Face Henchman were exclusive to this set. The set could be found at Toysrus.com in December of 2011, but in July of 2012 all of Batman’s cowls were updated with the newest version. You might want to check out which set you own before opening up that sealed box.

Batwing Battle Over Gotham City

Item #: 6863

Universe: DC

Ages: 7-14

Pieces: 278

Minifigures:

  1. Batman

  2. Joker

  3. Joker Henchman

This set is based on the 1989 Batman movie, starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. It was inspired by the scene in which the Joker attempts to poison Gotham City with his laughing gas. It is very similar to the 2006 LEGO Batman theme set The Batwing: The Joker’s Aerial Assault 7782.

Batman likes to keep close to his motif, so the Batwing was designed to resemble the bat-logo, that appears on this costumes and vehicles. As the Dark Knight, it is also important for him to keep his vehicles mostly black. The wings could open and close, much like the X-Wing Fighter from the Star Wars Theme sets. For offensive capabilities, the Batwing was equipped with two flick-fire missiles and the ability to automatically drop a batbomb.

The Joker has always been more colorful than his archenemy, which is why his helicopter is colored green and purple. The chopper is only able to fit one minifigure in the cockpit, so the other passenger is going to have to hang from the rope ladder below. Joker’s vehicle might be smaller than the Batwing, but it has four flick-fire missiles, making it more than a match for Batman. Since the story is about the Joker bombing Gotham with his laughing gas, the helicopter has a dropping gas bomb.

Catwoman Catcycle City Chase

Item #: 6858

Universe: DC

Ages: 5-12

Pieces: 89

Minifigures:

  1. Batman

  2. Catwoman

The scene takes place after Catwoman has stolen a large diamond and Batman is chasing her through the streets of Gotham. Although this set was not designed around any particular scene in the Batman franchise, LEGO did have a video game on their official website that is based on the story they created.

The vehicle in this set was Catwoman’s motorcycle, but the more interactive playing features are in the background props. The Catcycle is a purple motorcycle, that is shaped to resembles a cat. It has movable wheels and a place for Catwoman to store her whip. Batman is given a small jetpack in the shape of bat wings, that takes the place of his usual cape. The street corner is represented by sidewalk, a newspaper stand, boxes and a traffic light. Most of these items are not attached to each other, so they can be easily knocked over during the chase sequence. The traffic light stands over 4” tall and was designed to fall down from its post, as batman hits it with his batarang.

Dynamic Duo Funhouse Escape

Item #: 6857

Universe: DC

Ages: 7-14

Pieces: 380

Minifigures:

  1. Batman

  2. Robin

  3. Joker

  4. Harley Quinn

  5. Riddler

An original story was created for this Toys “R” Us exclusive. By having Riddler, Joker and Harley Quinn kidnap Robin and take him to their funhouse, LEGO was able to create a building set with lots of fun minifigures and interactive features for kids to play with.

The evil funhouse stands an impressive 8” high and 11” wide. Some of the less menacing features are located at the bottom level. There is a ticket booth with a Riddler mannequin inside, stairs leading to the second level, and a small rollercoaster for the minifigures to ride. However, the top level is where our Dynamic Duo had better be careful. On the far left is a large hammer that can be swung by using a lever on the back. Once activated, any minifigures standing in its path will get slammed. The floor in the top center of the funhouse has a knob in back attached to it, that can be turned to launch whoever is standing on it. The far right of the structure has a working winch on the top. This can be used to lower one our our heroes to their doom. If that was not enough, there is a trap door directly below the winch.

To quickly come to Robin’s rescue, Batman is given a batcycle. This batcycle looks much differently than previous LEGO batcycle designs. It had huge wheels and would incorporate Technic pieces.

For collectors interested in minifigures, the box and comic can be deceiving. The Riddler’s head on the box art was an earlier variant and the new variation, but this set included two of the newer heads. In the comic, Robin is show with part 62810 hair, instead of the new hair style of the actual minifigure.

Joker

Item #: 4527

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 57

Minifigures: N/A

The Joker was the only villain be made into an Ultrabuild set. He is also one of the most colorful characters you could build. The set envisioned him wearing a power suit made of purple, orange, green, dark gray, black and white pieces. In an attempt to make him even more menacing, Joker has orange spikes sticking out of his armour. To augment his offensive power, he was given an oversized gun that could supposedly shoot venom, smoke bombs, laughing gas and stun rays. He might not be a hero, but Joker could be combined with the Ultrabuild Green Lantern 4528 set and become an even bigger threat to the world.

Spider-Man

Spider-Man is one of the oldest and most beloved superheroes in the Marvel Universe. The Amazing Spider-Man was released in theatres this same year, but rather than focus on the $230,000,000 budget movie, LEGO used the animated series and comic books for their inspiration.

Spider-Man Black Costume

Item #: Comcon023

Universe: Marvel

Ages: N/A

Pieces: 6

Minifigures:

  1. Spider-Man (Black Suit)

Spider-Man’s black costume played an important part in his comic book history. What started out as a replacement suit for his ripped costume during the Secret Wars, ended up being an alien symbiote that would forever change Peter Parker’s life. The Spider-Man Black Costume minifigure was available at the San Diego Comic-Con. Only a few lucky fans were able to win this exclusive giveaway through a raffle.

Since Venom is Eddie Brock in Spider-Man’s original black symbiote costume, many people thought this set was supposed to be venom. However, next year LEGO would release the actual Venom minifigure and fans would be able to see the clear design difference that LEGO had envisioned.

The minifigure came with a card giving instructions for another Super Heroes Challenge. This time winners of the contest could win $15,000 in cash prizes and a chance to attend New York Comic Con. All fans had to do for a chance to win was post their LEGO Super Heroes video to the LEGO contest site.

Spider-Man’s Doc Ock Ambush

Item #: 6873

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 295

Minifigures:

  1. Spider-Man

  2. Iron Fist

  3. Doc Ock

The story behind this building set was similar to the Season 1, Episode 12 of the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man. The episode was titled “Me Time” and had Spider-Man captured and brought to Doc Ock’s lab. Iron Fist made a brief appearance, but did not have a major role in the story. The building set uses the story of Iron Fist being captured by Doc Ock, so that he can steal his powers.

The lab stands over 7” high and 10” wide. It was designed to hold superpowered individuals and run experiments on them. There is a containment cell and an examination table with movable arms to lock a minifigure in place. There is an air vent located at the top of a tower for Spider-Man to sneak into the lab.

The set also comes with a car belonging to Dr. Octopus. The car might only be 3” long, but it is jam packed with features. The seat can rotate and it is armed with a flick-fire missile. You can also remove Doc Ock’s arms and attach them to the car. The arms can then be spun to add even more power to this already deadly vehicle.

The set was available in LEGO Shops everywhere, but limited to the US through Wal-Mart and in the UK through Smyths. Making the set even more desirable, both versions of Iron Fist and Doc Ock could only be found in this building set.

Superman

Man of Steel would not be released in theaters until next year, but LEGO still had plenty of source material from the Superman franchise, to create a lot of fun building sets.

Bizarro

Item #: Comcon022

Universe: DC

Ages: N/A

Pieces: 6

Minifigures:

  1. Bizarro

Bizarro was given away as a promotional Super Heroes set at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Only a few lucky attendees were able to win this minifigure though a raffle. Bizarro used the Mutt William’s hairpiece from the Indiana Jones theme series. The minifigure of Bizarro looks much like you would expect, but to show LEGO’s attention to detail, he has the famous “Bizarro #1” rock necklace painted onto his torso.

The minifigure came with a card giving instructions for another Super Heroes Challenge. This time winners of the contest could win $15,000 in cash prizes and a chance to attend New York Comic Con. All fans had to do for a chance to win was post their LEGO Super Heroes video, to the LEGO contest site.

Lex Luthor

Item #: 30164

Universe: DC

Ages: N/A

Pieces: 17

Minifigures:

  1. Lex Luthor (Power Armour)

This set is closely tied to the LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes video game. Not only was the set based on Lex’s character in the game, but it was also given away with pre-orders in the US. UK would have the set sold with the game.

The polybag set has Lex Luthor in his Power Armour suit and Deconstructor gun. SInce the Deconstructor destroys shiny black objects, three black 2x2 bricks are included in the package. Lex’s armour is the same mold used in Galay Patrol’s from Minifigures Series 7, but it is colored green with purple sections.

Superman vs. Power Armor Lex

Item #: 6862

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 207

Minifigures:

  1. Superman

  2. Wonder Woman

  3. Lex Luthor

The buildable model in this set is Lex Luthor’s “Power Armour”. In reality, this armour is a large green humanoid robot. Instead of a head, there is a cockpit for Lex to control his machine. The robot stands over 5” tall and has lots of articulation. The feet, legs, arms and fingers can all be moved into different positions. A transparent green hose connects the kryptonite gun to the robot.

The power armour makes an appearance in level 10 and 15 of the LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes video game. However, it is the story to this set that is interesting, which is why I am bringing it up at the end. In the story, Lex has a large robot with a kryptonite gun, yet he has captured Wonder Woman and it is up to Superman to save her. This is the only set from the Super Heroes theme to include a Wonder Woman minifigure. They do this by having her start out as a “damsel in distress”, even though Lex Luthor is Superman’s main antagonist and he is in a vehicle clearly designed to destroy Superman.

X-Men

As one of the most popular franchises in Marvel’s impressive list of intellectual property, it is surprising that so few set were created around the mutants of Marvel.

Phoenix

Item #: Comcon021

Universe: Marvel

Ages: N/A

Pieces: 6

Minifigures:

  1. Phoenix

When Jean Grey took on the Phoenix power, she became one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. Since the Dark Phoenix storyline would have major repercussions that forever changed the X-Men, it should come as no surprise that Phoenix was one of the promotional LEGO Super Heroes minifigure characters raffled off at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con.

Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown

Item #: 6866

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 201

Minifigures:

  1. Wolverine

  2. Deadpool

  3. Magneto

This would be the first building set in the LEGO Super Heroes theme to be based on the X-Men. Deadpool’s helicopter is the major model in the set. This red and black chopper has a large cockpit, that can comfortably seat one minifigure. However, there is an opened section in the center that can fit the other two minifigures. The large rotor blades on top can spin to simulate flying. Since Deadpool is a mercenary, it is important for his vehicle to be well armed. For this purpose, it is equipped with two adjustable flick-fire missiles. The wing also has a storage clip for Deadpool’s sword, because that is the most practical place for him to keep it.

Wolverine and Magneto were given more basic forms of transportation. Wolverine’s motorcycle is a common model, that was first seen in the Indiana Jones theme almost a decade earlier. Magneto rides atop of a 2x2 round grey brick, as if he was using his powers to fly on a metal object.

The set is highly collectible for its minifigures. Not only are all three of these characters some of the most popular in the entire Marvel Universe, but this is also the first time Wolverine, Deadpool and Magneto were available as minifigures.

DC Universe

With thousands of characters in the DC Universe, it is impossible to lump them all into a single category. This is where you can find the LEGO sets that did not clearly fit into any of the above sections.

DC Universe Super Heroes Collection

Item #: 5000728

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 135

Minifigures: N/A

To help fans assemble their DC Ultrabuild sets, LEGO sold Batman 4526, The Joker 4527 and Green Lantern 4528 all together. This product collection allowed you to get all three sets at a cheaper price and not have to worry about tracking down individual sets.

Green Lantern

Item #: 4528

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 38

Minifigures: N/A

As a member of the Green Lantern Corps, Hal Jordan’s color scheme did not take a lot of thought. Since Hal can create almost anything from his ring, LEGO used that as a way to give him armour. This helped with the need for LEGO to create a more bulky design. For his weapon, Green Lantern is using a transparent green morning star coming from his ring. The Green Lantern Ultrabuild set could be combined with the Batman 4526 or The Joker 4527 sets to make the two enemies even more formidable of opponents.

Shazam

Item #: Comcon020

Universe: DC

Ages: N/A

Pieces: 6

Minifigures:

  1. Shazam

Captain Marvel has always fought to stay out of Superman’s shadow. However, when LEGO was trying to figure out which characters to make into promotional minifigures, they went with Shazam over the Man of Steel. (We won't tell Billy Batson that Superman was used for last years giveaway.) Unfortunately, his minifigure was a combination of Bruce Wayne and Superman. He was given Bruce Wayne’s hair piece and face, except there were wrinkles around the eyes to more closely match Superman’s.

The minifigure came with a card giving instructions for another Super Heroes Challenge. This time winners of the contest could win $15,000 in cash prizes and a chance to attend New York Comic Con. All fans had to do for a chance to win was post their LEGO Super Heroes video to the LEGO contest site.

Marvel Universe

Marvel Comics has created thousands of characters and many of them do not belong to any team or organization. This is for all those characters who only had one set in any particular category. Technically the Hulk is an Avenger, but these sets were not tied to the movie and Hulk is not really a team player.

To help fans assemble their Marvel Ultrabuild sets, LEGO sold Iron Man 4529, The Hulk 4530 and Captain America 4597 all together. This product collection allowed you to get all three sets at a cheaper price and not have to hunt them down at different stores.
