LEGO Super Heroes 2013

Updated on July 4, 2015

Both Marvel and DC comics were having huge financial success in the movie, television, video game and book markets. LEGO would continue to release sets based on these popular characters.

Batman

This year, LEGO used Batman to showcase The World’s Greatest Detective’s extensive rogue gallery and allies.

Arctic Batman vs Mr. Freeze: Aquaman on Ice

Item #: 76000

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 198

Minifigures:

  1. Arctic Batman

  2. Aquaman

  3. Mr. Freeze

The story for this set revolves around Mr. Freeze trapping Aquaman in a block of ice. The Batboat is designed for speed and the icy conditions found in the arctic. The boat is shaped to resemble Batman’s insignia. To help it effortlessly slide along sheets of ice, skis were added to the side pontoons. Two small discs could be fired by pressing the grey buttons in the back. To help Baman aim, a targeting image was placed on the working canopy. The ice prison has a white lever in the back. By pressing down on the lever, the transparent blue “ice” bricks split apart and free whoever is trapped inside. This would be the first time Arctic Batman, Aquaman and Mr. Freeze would be released in the new DC Super Heroes theme building sets. Early releases of the set had the word arctic on the box spelled “Arctic”. This mistake was eventually fixed, but collectors will want to keep their eyes out for this spelling mistake.

The Bat vs Bane: Tumbler Chase

Item #: 76001

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 368

Minifigures:

  1. Batman

  2. Commissioner Gordon

  3. Bane

For this building set, LEGO took vehicles from the new Dark Knight Rises film and then created their own story. Bane is driving through the streets of Gotham and Commissioner Gordon is trying to stop him with two measly road barriers. Luckily, Batman is flying the Bat and ready to take on Bane’s Tumbler.

The Tumbler used cream colored bricks to replicate the camouflage paint job used in the movie. It was built to be compact and durable. The cabin’s roof can be pulled up, so that a minifigure can be placed inside. Underneath the two rear flaps, TECHNIC pieces can be raised to expose flick-fire missiles.

The Bat is the Dark Knight Rises’ version of the Batwing. The large cockpit has enough room for two minifigures. One minifigure can sit at the controls, while another fits behind the pilot’s seat. If Batman does not want to share the cabin, there is a rope hanging down from The Bat for a minifigure to grab onto. The wings are placed on the top rear of the vehicle and can be moved into different positions. The intimidating appearance of The Bat comes from the turbines attached to a pair of arms sticking out the sides. These arms and engines can also be moved into different positions. Each turbine is equipped with a flick-fire missile and cannon.

The building set’s description claims to include a Batarang, but in reality this is one of the few sets to not have a Batarang come with the Batman minifigure. The set did come with a code for a free downloadable PC copy of the original LEGO Batman: The Videogame.

Batman Arkham Asylum Breakout

Item #: 10937

Universe: DC

Ages: 12+

Pieces: 1,619

Minifigures:

  1. Batman

  2. Robin

  3. Guard

  4. Dr. Harleen Quinzel

  5. Joker

  6. Poison Ivy

  7. Penguin

  8. Scarecrow

This set’s story revolves around a prison break at The Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Dr. Harleen Quinzel has not taken on the Harley Quinn identity permanently yet, but she has just helped the inmates escape. Arkham Asylum is the most famous prisons in comic history. Although this facility is a hospital to help psychotic criminals get better, it is often used to hold powerful villains who require special holding cells. LEGO went all out in creating this model and it become the largest Super Heroes building set.

To fit the eight detailed room of the Asylum, the main building stands over 12” high, 13” wide and 5” deep. The outside of the building is mostly constructed of grey bricks and designed to look like an old, stone, gothic building. One of the top windows is broken and has rope hanging out, for a minifigure to climb down. The back of the building is open and exposes the inside of the asylum. The security center is at the main entrance of the building. There is a swivel chair for the security guard to turn toward and away from the desk. For a little bit of fun detail, the office has a red phone that matches the one found in The Batcave 6860 set. To the left of the security office there are two prison cells, with the typical bars. These cell doors can be opened individually or in unison. To the right of the security office is a small room for Dr. Harleen Quinzel. This is probably her secret getaway, since it has her Harley Quinn jester cap and a picture of The Joker with a kiss mark on it. The vanity mirror can be rotated around to expose mugshots of several Batman villains. These mugshots can be interchanged on the doors of the prison cells. On the far left side of the second level, we see the broken window with the rope hanging out. Next to the broken window is the specialized greenhouse cell for Poison Ivy. Moving further to the right, there is a psychiatric treatment center. The lab has a chair for the patient to be strapped down and a lamp above it. The room also has a computer and medical devices to run experiments. The far right room is an office with a desk and green swiveling armchair. There is a small spire above Poison Ivy’s cell that was specially designed to hold Mr. Freeze. His jail is built to show his need for subzero temperatures.

The front gate to the property stands 5” high and is an impressive obstacle for a 1.5” minifigure. The gate is not attached to the main structure and can be moved into any position you want. The two doors can be swung open or closed and are attached to posts. The post have large winged statues to help add to the haunted gothic architecture.

There is a prison van for transporting patients to and from the asylum. The cabin can be accessed by a door on either side, but there is only one seat for the driver. The doors in the back of the van open up to reveal a gurney with restraints. The roof can also be removed for easier access.

Robin and Redbird Cycle

Item #: 30166

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 40

Minifigures:

  1. Robin

This small polybag set might have escaped the notice of most LEGO customers. It was available through Toys “R” Us, if you spent 30 dollars or more (before tax) on LEGO Super Heroes building sets. However, I was able to find on ad that had a 20 dollar minimum purchase requirement. Which is nice, since most sets were under 30 dollar and then jumped to the 100 dollar range. The Redbird Cycle is a very basic model, but its limited availability has made it desirable among collectors.

Green Arrow

Oliver Queen has been gaining more popularity over the years. The CW has successfully used the Green Arrow in two of their popular shows. He was a recurring character in Smallville, which told the story of Clark Kent’s journey to becoming Superman. In 2012, Oliver was given his own show called Arrow. It’s darker storyline proved to be a hit among their younger demographic.

Minifigures:

  1. Green Arrow

Only 200 lucky fans were able to win this minifigure at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. The minifigure is based on the character found in New 52 comics and was the same design used in the LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes video game.

Iron Man

This year LEGO would base their sets on the new Iron Man 3 movie. An impressive accomplishment, because Tony Stark did not actually wear his Iron Man suit for most of the film.

Gun Mounting System

Item #: 30168

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 17

Minifigures:

  1. Iron Patriot

This polybag set was placed in pre-ordered packages of the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes video game. In the United States, it was available through Walmart and in Australia it had to be pre-ordered through EB Games.

Warning: If you go on eBay looking for Iron Man minifigures, there are a lot of options to buy a set of 6 to 8 Iron Man minifigures in his various armors. They are attached to a similar Gun Mounting System. These are fake knock offs and not official LEGO products.

Iron Man: Extremis Sea Port Battle

Item #: 76006

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 195

Minifigures:

  1. Iron Man (Mark 42)

  2. War Machine

  3. Aldrich Killian

This set is very loosely based on the movie. Aldrich Killian did not drive a speedboat while attempting to escape and War Machine was not chasing him. However, there was a fight near water. One minifigure can fit in the drivers seat of the speedboat, but the bow’s top can be removed to accommodate another minifigure. The boat is equipped with two flick-fire missiles, that can be launched by pushing down on a grey lever in the back. To help set the scene, the set also comes with a small buoy. The buoy was also equipped with a grey lever, but pushing this lever causes the buoy to “explode”.

Minifigures:

  1. Iron Man (Mark 6)

This polybag set was originally available as a promotional giveaway from May 16th to 31st, for people who spent at least $50 on LEGO building sets through Shop@Home. If you missed this promotion, a few stores were allowed to sell it after the promotion had ended. The small drone was packed with details. It came with two saws, an antenna and a flick-fire missile.

Spider-Man: Daily Bugle Showdown

Item #: 76005

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 476

Minifigures:

  1. Spider-Man

  2. J. Jonah Jameson

  3. Nova

  4. Dr. Doom

  5. Beetle

This set was inspired by the episode Beetle Mania, from Ultimate Spider-Man animated T.V. show. For those people looking to find the show quickly, it was from season 1, episode 16. In the show, Spider-Man and S.H.I.E.L.D. are assigned to protect J. Jonah Jameson from the Beetle. The LEGO story has J. J. believing he has discovered Spider-Man’s secret identity. This causes Dr. Doom and the Beetle to attack the Daily Bugle, to try to steal this secret information from Jameson.

The star of this set is the Daily Bugle building. The three story skyscraper stands over 14” high, 7” wide and 3” deep. It is the perfect set piece for our wall crawling hero. There are studs for Spider-Man to be attached or “stick” to the wall spread out over the structure. For those characters who can’t scale walls or fly, there is a fire escape on the side of building. There are two large transparent blue doors at the bottom entrance that can be swung open. The rest of the building is covered with large blue windows. The front right window, on the second floor can be blasted out by pressing a red lever. There is a large antenna at the top of the building, to give it even more height. The letters DBC are above the main entrance and on top of the building. I had no idea what the C stood for. It turns out that DBC stands for Daily Bugle Communications. The roof is jam packed with playable features. A trap door is well hidden in the grey coloring. The large DBC sign on the top can be destroyed by pushing a red lever. There is another red lever that can shove a minifigure off the ledge. The ground level of the building is sparsely decorated and looks like an empty entrance hall. The second floor contains Jameson’s office. The layout desk has a fun swivel chair and by the breakaway window is the safe holding Spider-Man’s secret identity. The third story is a larger office for multiple reporters to work on their articles.

To add some details to the setting, you can also construct a street lamp and dumpster. The green dumpster has a built in catapult function that can launch a minifigure into the air, to simulate flying.

The Doomjet is smaller than the DBC building, but is more than capable of getting the job done. It is armed with 2 flick-fire missiles to blow up the building or keep any pesky superheroes away. There is an anchor hook, that can be used to secure the safe and rip it off the ground. The opening cockpit can fit one minifigure inside.

Iron Man: Malibu Mansion Attack

Item #: 76007

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 364

Minifigures:

  1. Iron Man (Mark 42)

  2. Tony Stark

  3. Pepper Potts

  4. The Mandarin (Robes)

  5. Extremis Soldier

This set’s story was based on the scene in Iron Man 3, where Tony’s Malibu Mansion is attacked by the Extremis terrorist group. Rather than having Savin lead the attack, LEGO put The Mandarin in scene. While the front of the mansion stays faithful to the look of the film, the inside was changed from the living room, to Stark’s workshop. The box shows Pepper Potts in the Iron Man suit, to replicate Tony having the armour protect her, as the building is crumbling around them.

The mansion is a little over 3” high, but stretches an impressive 7” wide and 6” deep. There are three windows in the front. Two of them have images on them, as if they are displaying information from a computer screen. The third window is clear and designed to be easily knocked out. The inside lab was given a lot of fun details. The Hall of Armour has spots for two Iron Man suits, and images of the Mark 6 and 7 to indicate where they should be stored. Behind these images is a red lever that can be pulled to blow up the Hall of Armour. A computer station is built on top of a round rotating section of the floor. The set also comes with a DUM-E robot. DUM-E is holding a fire extinguisher as a nod to the first film. There is a small kitchen area, with a not so subtle pun of having a blender fill with orange stude to represent Mandarin oranges.

The helicopter is actually 2 inches longer than the building. Rather than being disguised as a news helicopter, it prominently displays the Ten Ring insignia of the Mandarin. The cockpit has room for one pilot, but there is a stand on the side of the cabin for another minifigure to hitch a ride. Since the helicopter was sent to destroy Tony’s home, it is equipped with four flick-fire missiles. To add life to the helicopter, its rotor blades can rotate.

Iron Man vs The Mandarin: Ultimate Showdown

Item #: 76008

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 91

Minifigures:

  1. Iron Man (Mark 17)

  2. Mandarin

Although this set was inspired by the Iron Man 3 movie, there is almost nothing connecting it to the film beyond the characters. Perhaps because the Iron Man and Mandarin “ultimate showdown” was the reveal of The Mandarin was nothing more than a drunk actor. That is not the best thing to build a children’s play set around. This imagined dockside battle story is much more fun to play with. The Mandarin’s armored buggy is only 3” long and 2” wide, but jam packed with deadly weapons. To take on Tony Stark in his Mark 17 armor, its two flick-fire missiles and flamethrower are attached to a rotating crane.

Spider-Man

Most of the LEGO building sets for Spider-Man would draw their inspiration from the Ultimate Spider-Man animated television show. However, a promotional minifigure would give fans a hint at what was being planned for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie next year.

Spider-Man: Spider-Cycle Chase

Item #: 76004

Universe: Marvel

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 237

Minifigures:

  1. Spider-Man

  2. Nick Fury

  3. Venom

This set is based on Ultimate Spider-Man animated T.V. show, but not a particular episode. Nick Fury’s personal S.H.I.E.L.D. car was only briefly seen on the television show and not part of a major storyline. For this set, LEGO has Venom stealing Fury’s flying car to get away and Spider-Man must chase him down on his Spider-Cycle.

Nick Fury’s car has the white S.H.I.E.L.D. logo clearly displayed on the hood. The green coloring helps keeps with the military background of the team. At a quick glance, the car appears to seat two minifigures, but upon closer inspection there is only one seat behind the wheel. The back section of the car can be raised to reveal a flick-fire missile. As a S.H.I.E.L.D. automobile, it is important to have it transform into a flying vehicle. TECHNIC pieces allow the four wheels to be folded inward and have the car enter flight mode.

In the television show, Dr. Curt Connors built the Spider-Cycle to help Spider-Man conserve his strength and web fluid, when he needed to travel long distances. Many of its functions, like shooting webs and climbing vertical surfaces, were similar to Spider-Man’s natural powers. It was also equipped with military scanners and split tires to ride on train tracks. This is a S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicle, so it could also fly. LEGO decided to focus solely on the flying function. This slim cycle used long TECHNIC pieces for the wheel mounts. This allowed the four wheels to fold out and create a flying hovercraft.

At the time of its release, this was the only set to include Nick Fury. This is interesting, because a lot of the Super Heroes building sets are based on the movies. Yet, Nick Fury has been a constant character in many of Marvel’s movies. Since Spider-Man’s film rights belong to Sony, Nick Fury has never appeared in a Spider-Man movie.

Spider-Woman

Many women have taken on the role of Spider-Woman. Jessica Drew was the first and the one to wear the costume for the longest period of time. This could be why LEGO decided to use her as their first Spider-Woman minifigure.

  1. Spider-Woman

On July 18th, 2013, LEGO raffled away 350 promotional Spider-Woman minifigures at the San Diego Comic-Con. She was given a double sided expression head to show either anger or happiness. Superman

With a $225,000,000 budget, the Man of Steel movie was a highly anticipated event. Fans were looking forward to forgetting the 2006 Superman Returns movie and WB was looking forward to rebooting their franchise.

Jor-El

Item #: 5001623

Universe: DC

Ages: 6+

Pieces: 5

Minifigures:

  1. Jor-El

The Jor-El minifigure was included in purchases of 75 dollar or more from LEGO.com or their physical retail stores. This limited time offer was a nice cross promotion for LEGO and the new Man of Steel movie. Jor-El has always been portrayed as the wise father figure in Superman films. However, with the casting of Russell Crowe, people could see him kicking butt. It was not a stretch seeing him in a Superman suit.

Item #: comcon029

Universe: DC

Ages: 5+

Pieces: 5

Minifigures:

  1. Superman (Black Suit)

Superman has evolved a lot since his beginnings of fighting for truth, justice and the American way. He has become a citizen of Earth and not just one country. Despite this change, his red, yellow and blue color scheme has remained relatively constant. However, he has worn black in the past and with the darker Man of Steel movie, putting him in the black suit as a promotional giveaway made perfect sense. Only 200 of these minifigures were raffled on July 20th, 2013 at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Superman Battle of Smallville

Item #: 76003

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 418

Minifigures:

  1. Superman

  2. General Zod (Combat Armor)

  3. Faora

  4. Tor-An

  5. Colonel Hardy

The story for this set is based on the scene from the Man of Steel, after Superman and Lois have escaped from the Kryptonian ship Black Zero. Zod and his soldiers have tracked Kal-El to Smallville and an epic fight ensues.

The Black Zero Dropship is the largest of the two models. It measures over 5” high, 8” long and 9” wide. It’s cockpit could fit one minifigure, but since Kryptonians can fly on Earth, more seats are not necessary. The wings could be moved into several different positions and offered both landing and flight mode. As a military vessel, it was extremely well armed. It had dual shooters, that are much larger than a flick-fire missile, and a rotating cannon underneath. The storage bay of the ship had even more weapons available for the minifigures to use.

The Offroader was a fancy military jeep. At a little over 4” high, 4” long and 2” wide, it is much smaller than the Black Zero Dropship. This desert colored car was equipped with a rotating cannon and armed with 2 flick-fire missiles.

Superman Black Zero Escape

Item #: 76009

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 168

Minifigures:

  1. Superman

  2. Lois Lane

  3. General Zod (Combat Armor)

This set was based on Kal-El and Lois Lane attempting to escape from Black Zero. Although a holographic image of Jor-El was vital to their success, he was left out of this set.

Despite being aboard the large mothership, this is a rather small set. LEGO decided to focus on two parts of the ship, rather than the entire craft. There is an escape pod for Lois Lane to climb into and get back to Earth. There is a closing cockpit, to safely seal her inside. Zod is in control room, try to stop their escape. There is a sliding door and folding ladder walkway allow minifigures access to a weapons platform. From here, two mini flick-fire missiles may be launched at the enemy.

Superman Metropolis Showdown

Item #: 76002

Universe: DC

Ages: 6-12

Pieces: 119

Minifigures:

  1. Superman

  2. General Zod

This set is based on the final battle between Superman and Zod. As these two gods duke it out over the city, they destroy almost every building in their path. Since building an entire city to destroy would put the set out of the price range of most buyers, LEGO scaled down their models to a car and satellite tower. The yellow and black car is a basic car that you might find in the standard city building sets. The satellite tower is where LEGO added the functions to make this a showdown. The tower can be removed from the base, to either simulate it falling down or have one of the Kryptonians use it as a blunt weapon. There is also a ramp that works as a catapult. The box shows it being used to either flip the car or launch a minifigure to help them fly through the air.
