Minecraft Clearing an Ocean Monument
In Minecraft with the release of version 1.8 Ocean Monuments/Sea Temples are new area's to explore and conquer. But they are hazardous areas and players run the risk of losing expensive gear, this guide will explain how to conquer these temples while being completely naked, without the use of glitches and in survival mode.
The Equipment Needed
Indian Jones would take a whip, a pistol and damsel in distress to conquer most temples but since Mojang hasn't added any of those things we're going to clear out an ocean monument with the following equipment.
- Flint and Steel
- Milk or Invisibility Potion
- A Pick and Shovel
- Sponge (Optional)
The General Idea
Ocean Monuments/Sea Temples generally have three Elder Guardians located throughout the temple. These Elder Guardians once per minute will search a 50 block area for players, upon finding the player they will put a debuff on the player called "Mining Fatigue." This prevents you from breaking blocks for 5 minutes but can be removed by drinking milk. By drinking an invisibility potion the player be effectively hide from the Elder Guardians and thus not receive the debuff.
While "Mining Fatigue" is a hassle it only needs to be removed when you have the need to break blocks.
All picture's used in this guide were taken in a survival server Octain.
First Elder Guardian
The first Elder Guardian is almost always located at the topmost part of the temple. To gain easy access to this a land platform can be constructed above the temple as shown in the above picture.
Walls need to be built below the platform and then the water removed to create a staging area for supplies as well as preparing to kill the first Elder Guardian. In the picture above the water has been cleared by the use of a sponge. Sponges can be found in random rooms throughout water temples/ocean monuments. When first acquired they are wet sponges and need to be dried in a furnace to be useful.
*While sponges are helpful not all players have access to them, especially if this is their first Ocean Monument. Water can be removed by replacing the water blocks with other blocks (sand, dirt, etc) and then removing the blocks. Mining Fatigue can make this a difficult task, so remember to drink your milk.
Now that the staging room is clear breaking the blocks below the room will unveil the first Elder Guardian. Depending on where the Elder Guardian is located he might appear to bulge past the walls, as long as his beam doesn't hit you, you're safe. Trap the Elder Guardian by building a wall around him of either dirt or sand. Elder Guardian don't die when all the water is removed, they simply flop around.
To kill an Elder Guardian the player needs to either drop sand on top of the Guardian and thus suffocating it inside the block of sand or if the water has been removed by lighting a block on fire and burning the guardian. The Sand Method does not require you to empty out the room of water while the fire method does.
Flint and Steel Method
Locating an Elder Guardians
In the picture you see three black circles these are locations which have elder guardians. There will almost always be an elder guardians located at the topmost part of the temple. The two other circles represent the area where the other two guardians have taken up residence, one guardian per wing of the Ocean Monument/ Sea Temple. The two other guardians move around so some searching is required.
Safely Searching an Ocean Monument
While the first Elder Guardian is easy to locate the other two can be a chore, especially with a sea temple filled with Guardians and that's where our other equipment comes into play.
Doors not only provide an air bubble to breathe, they also block Guardian's beam attack. For a beam to successfully do damage to the player it needs charge for several seconds, during this time a sound can be heard and the beam changes from purple to bright yellow. No damage is done to the player until after the beam is fully charged. To interrupt the attack simply move the beam over a solid block as shown in the picture.
Walls of dirt or sand can be placed to help avoid damage from Guardian Beams.
Regular guardians are throughout the inside and outside of the temple. They need water to spawn and out of water they become much less effective but still dangerous. Like their Elder counterparts their defensive ability thorns damage players when attacked. It's best to ignore the regular guardians until the Elder Guardians are dealt with. As long as you pay attention to their beams and interrupt the charge by moving over a solid block, they are harmless.
Once all the Elder Guardian.are killed the player doesn't have to worry about Mining Fatigue and can search and clear the rest of the Ocean Monument much easier. Sponges greatly help the player clear the temple of water if that's the players goal. Sponge rooms appear to be random and temples can have anywhere from zero to three sponge rooms. Happy hunting.
