Conflict: Vietnam (2004)

This game is on the Playstation 2 and the Xbox but the PS2 version is the one I've conquered so that's the one I'm referring to. The game has Multi player, one player and the cool as can be two player split screen playing in the jungles. This is my personal favorite of all the Vietnam games.

The game starts in 1968 and it's based off the real life "Tet Offensive". Your character controls four airborne squad members from day one. Fight through the jungles eliminating the enemy and escaping napalm attacks in the process. The cut scenes are realistic and the fighting is intense but using strategic moves is as important as anything else in this game so use your map wisely. The little details about the fall of Saigon and other war details are impressive in this game. My favorite part of this game is having to fight, sneak and break out of the Prisoner of War camp midway through the game.

My personal top six horror games.

Shellshock: Nam 67 (2004)

I've beat this game on the Playstation 2 and the Xbox. They are nearly identical. The cut scenes as well as the final scene when you conquer the game are just fantastic. Your a freshly drafted soldier and you play combat from a third person view in a shooter style mode.

You crash your chopper in the middle of gunfire in the jungles of Vietnam. Burn villages, save American hostages and destroy enemy forces. During cutscenes clues will tell you what to do next. Many battles are one by sneaking up on the enemy fighters and this game uses that ideal well. The game is intense from start to finish and the ending is dramatic as it gets. You save all the P.O.W.S but the Vietcong bomb them dead with only one survivor. A final comment would be that the soundtrack is great with music by Percy Sledge, The Monkees and Status Quo.

Platoon (1987)

The version of Platoon that I played was the NES version that came out in 1987. The graphics were weak but the gameplay was entertaining and the game stayed true to the film to a large degree. Maps, flares, death, knives and M14 machine guns and all of the elements of the movie that were put into the game was detailed even though the graphics are subpar.

It's a one player game with four levels to beat to win the game. The game is pretty simple but, at the same time it stays true to wartime with activities such as arming and disarming bombs, setting and dodging booby traps, saving hostages and the game has some unique elements for its time. In level one the soldier plays in side scroll view but level 2 turns to a first person shooter until the final level in which the player turns into third person view. To win the game you have to hit Sargent Barnes five times with grenades.

No ratings system in 1987.

Call of Duty: Black Ops (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, Windows)

Call of Duty: Black Ops has excellent and realistic gameplay and sound. It's one of the most famous Vietnam war games in history.

Call of Duty: Black Ops (Gameplay)

Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)

The version of the game talked about here is for the PS3. I have played the 360 version and they are both excellent. An awesome first person shooter classic with Multi player capabilities. The full motion video scenes are still astonishing to me and at one point during the game you fly a helicopter which is one of the coolest parts of the game about Nam.

During gameplay you will play from different views depending which area your in and who your controlling. The weaponry in this game is unmatched. One of my favorite parts of the game is the attention to detail. Examples: Fidel Castro and President John F. Kennedy are featured in the cut scenes. The game is very realistic and uses real Hollywood actors such as Gary Oldman and Ed Harris. Oh Yea, if you ever get bored there is always Zombie Mode!

Lost Patrol (Atari, Amiga)

Lost Patrol did not have great graphics but it was fact based and the gameplay is fantastic. Use grenades, machine guns and most of all smarts to get through the jungles of Vietnam.

Lost Patrol: Saigon (1990)

Lost Patrol isn't great graphics wise but, it is an excellent Atari ST game, probably my favorite for that system. A fantastic role playing game with constant action and strategy intertwined. This game could have a better save feature but, truthfully, it is an easy game to beat anyway. It is just a fun war game to play over and over. I loved this game so much that I actually played it on the keyboard for a while before getting a joystick. For the time of its release it was pretty realistic especially when it came to being able to interrogate the enemy.

It's a one player game in which you navigate seven American G.I.'s across Vietnam to a military base without dying. It takes patience and a lot of strategy and that's what keeps this game worth it plus it's true to the war. Watch out for snipers, booby traps and most important keep morale high for your unit. Watch the health and ammo at all times and be sure to use the map to make it to your destination.

No ratings system in 1990.
