My thoughts on Sonic Boom Designs "Knuckles"

Updated on March 28, 2015

Greetings Sonic Fans

I am here again to talk about the upcoming series Sonic Boom and just what Sega has done to all our favorite Sonic characters. At this point I have already discussed Sonic, Tails and Dr Eggman and now I am going to talk about the makeover that has been given to Knuckles the Echidna and what a makeover it is perhaps the most extensive one yet. Knuckles first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 1994, he is kinda the opposite of what Sonic is. Sonic (hence his name) is superfast in fact he is the fastest thig around, Knuckles is the strongest thing around. He may have been a rival in the beginning but sense then he has become a great all. All that is still the same for the new game, just not how he looks which bring me up to the next subject.

What is Sonic Boom?

Sonic Boom is an upcoming game coming out for the Nintendo Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS. It is meant to be a sub franchise to the main Sonic the Hedgehog games not a reboot but a whole new thing altogether. For the game the characters have been given new designs and in some cases whole new abilities. There are at least five playable characters, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and a new character Sticks the Jungle Badger (Only on the 3DS). With the newbie being the exception, they have all been given a new look for the game as a means of trying reconnect with children today and in a since reintroduce the world to Sonic the Hedgehog without completely throwing out the old method and design in which some of us have in fact grown to love.

Please not at once

Doing them all at once would take far to much time and make this a really long article, and I am sure you all have things you would like to get back to so that is why I am going do this one at a time.

Play the game and see for your self.

Knuckles as he looked in everything before Sonic Adventure.
Knuckles as he looked in everything before Sonic Adventure.

Knuckles the Echidna (Classic)

Knuckles has like the rest gone minimal changes between before and Sonic Adventure in fact the only real difference is that he was shorter and didn't have the purple eyes. But he was still Knuckles matching Sonic's speed with brute strength, meaning that there is almost nothing he can't break. But this is supposed to be about his design, so lets get back on track. I like this design although the small extra detail that was given to it in Sonic Adventure was needed however I will not say anything to bad about this design since everything Rad Red was based on this design first seen in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 1994.

Knuckles the Echidna (Sonic Riders)

Not to dissimilar from his slandered design except his shoes are different in design now including something that looks like a zipper and he has goggles that hang around his neck although like all of them except for Jet the Hawk, he never seems to use them. There is not much to say about this design given that there is not much change however I do think that sunglasses better fit the character given that it was an item that he could wear in Sonic Adventure 2, the look is fine for a racing series but I wouldn't won't much more then that.

This is how Knuckles the Echidna looks in games today

Knuckles the Echidna (modern)

Like most of them, this design for Knuckles was first seen in Sonic Adventure. With his iconic white boxing gloves with spikes, red and yellow shoes with bolts and of course his dreadlocks, Knuckles is probably one of the most recognizable characters ot of the Sonic the Hedgehog series right up there with Sonic and Shadow. His simple look is almost what you would expect for someone named knuckles that lives alone on angle island guarding the Master Emerald. Knuckles is even sometimes thought to be cooler then Sonic for his rough attitude and deep mysteries background. knuckles is probably one of my favorite characters personally right there with Sonic and it is always a pleasure to play with him in any game.

This is how Knuckles the Echidna in sonic Boom.

Knuckles the Echidna (Sonic Boom)

Well knuckles is allot bigger now being that every one else is just up to his chest if not lower. Knuckles now has bandages around his arms and hands he still has spikes on his gloves but now they look as though they are made of metal and now he most differently has five fingers to work with. In Sonic Boom I think it is quite obvious that Knuckles is supposed to be the strong guy, what with his height and shoulders wider then his wast. Without a doubt Knuckles has undergone perhaps the biggest change right with Dr Eggman which makes me bring up that we all must remember whether you like it or hate it, Sonic Boom is just a sub series.

My Rating

1 star for Sonic Boom desgin "Knuckles"

The Verdict

I don't like it. Knuckles doesn't need the terminator body to show off that he is tough and what is with the bandages? he looks like a muay thai fighter, when in fact he more have struck me has a boxer which would make a better use of his brute strength then muay thai. To me this is not Knuckles noor does it look any good, thank goodness it is only a sub series.

Having since written this, I have played the game and watch the cartoon series and I must say that that the new look grows on you and better matchs the big strong dumb guy personality that they have given him in the series. Making me feel that this is less of a redesign as a whole different Knuckles altogether, but the Sonic Adventure Knuckles is still the best one with the most to offer.

What do you think?

Do you like the new look?

Final Thoughts

I know you all are probably getting suck of me talking about this but I only have two more left so hang in there. Again if you have all of them at this point then awesome and thank you so much and if you haven't then you should go back and read them. As for now, May Rose I am gunning for you next.

Jeremy Gill, you are absolutely right. Knuckles was probably one of the best characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise but in Sonic Boom all of that was tossed out the window practically. Thank you for the comment, it means allot to me, and sorry about what the idiots have done to Knuckles. I guess one thing that we can take out of this is at least he was playable instead of being ignored and forgotten like he has been in many of the Sonic games today.

Thanks for your article, James. Knuckles used to be one of the coolest Sonic characters; he was tough, durable, pretty fast, and could glide. And, unlike his new Sonic Boom form, he's not dumb, just a bit gullible. Once Shadow the Hedgehog came in, he sort of took over as Sonic's rival; a real shame since Knuckles has some awesome qualities.
