Nagareru Japanese Minecraft Texture Pack (16 x 16)
Looking for a Japanese / Asian inspired Minecraft texture pack? Look no further! Nagareru is a Japanese themed texture pack that does most things right. And that's high praise coming from someone who feeds on the tears of texture pack creators.
If you've been on the edge of your seat waiting for a decent Japanese themed pack, you'll be relieved to hear that it's not difficult to see the Japanese inspiration in this texture pack – even when out and about the pink cherry blossoms are a fairly clear and present reminder that the land of the rising sun has had some serious influence over the world you're walking around in. The trees and landscapes are actually quite stunning in this texture pack and it's very easy to forget that this isn't actually an HD texture pack. Although it uses the default textures it does it with a smooth, flowing style that one would probably expect if one knew what the word 'nagareru' meant in Japanese – 'flowing'.
I have to admit that I'm not entirely sure why the sun in this texture pack is dangerously close to earth and somewhat pink, but I'm not one to let massive death stars get in the way of a good time. There's much to be enjoyed closer to the ground.
Windows are plain white with vertical bars and could probably do
with a little tweaking to give them some depth, but from a distance
they really do work to create the impression of Asian architecture.
Torches have been transformed into white wax candles, which works
well. Lightstone has charming Japanese characters inscribed on it,
which make it enlightening. Ha! I see what I did there. The highlight
of the changes in this texture pack for me were probably the doors,
which emulate rice paper screens and are awesome. If you run out of
the usual blocks to create themed buildings with, wool is a viable
alternative, with a bunch of wool textures having been changed to
reflect traditional Japanese materials. Tatami mats galore! (Someone
needs to recreate that dojo scene from The Matrix, stat.)
Mob wise, most of the mobs are untouched so far. I'm not sure what is up with the Japanese dog with the red tribal patterns, but that's probably due to my own ignorance and not a weird flight of unrelated fancy on the part of the creator of this texture pack.
All in all, this is a great little texture pack. In terms of critique, all I really noticed (aside from the massive super sun) was the fact that the wood was all very dark. I usually associate lighter, smoother woods with Japanese architecture, but hey, what do I know? Very little, that's what.
