Playing with Low Pocket Pair

Updated on February 1, 2011

The best smile you give when you get a pair as pocket cards. you feel like you got the best hand and thus you are the KING in this hand. so you don't care about what others have got. This is something very typical that when we get a pair as pocket card we can't stop playing it. For example, you got a pair of 5 as pocket card and you raise. Another person with AK of clubs reraises. Your eyes are on your pocket cards and smile on your face. You think "huh! I have a pair and s/he reraised!! I go all-in". Thus, you forgot to think that if s/he has got even a six at hand and comes another six but no five in the community cards, then you will lose. The danger with low pair or with any pair except AA is that there is a possibility you can lose. For example, you have got KK and you raise and another person has got AK of any suite and no more K came in the community cards but came an A, then you will lose.

Don't be in love with your pocket cards. Learn to play with the opponents' hands, not yours. That is, don't think you have the best hand and never think that your opponent is bluffing. Respect their call/raise/reraise and play as it is required. If you think you have a good hand, play it otherwise fold it. If you see someone is bluffing, then let him bluff. Don't answer the bluffer with a weak hand as may be he has got a good hand this time and win. So wait until you get a good hand and the bluffer will be caught after a while.

At last, I have a question to you: How many times have you lost a hand with a low pocket pair?

Fun hub. I'm not a big card player so this was interesting to read.
