Pokemon Go: In the Know
Like No One Ever Was
My inner 90's child was so excited to be able to go out into the real world and catch Pokemon. I grew up with a little brother that was very into Pokemon. He had the episodes on vhs (oh yes, vhs), collected the cards, and we both played the games on our gameboy colors. I remember summer breaks that had us going to the local movie theatre to see the movies over any over.
Several months ago I heard that there was going to be a game where the players would be able to walk around and catch Pokemon. I knew that I would need to give it a shot. Fast forward a few months and I find out its free. Its free! This amazing game was available for free.
So, I decided to take a bite from the poison apple and give it a try. Within minutes of signing up and designing my avatar I had caught my first Pokemon. And to make it even better it was a charmander. He was one of my favorites when I was younger. I was hooked.
I was out to be the very best like no one ever was. Well, me and the vast majority of the young adults in the nation. I have since discovered some ups and downs with the game and some of the people that play it.
The game itself really isn't that hard. You create your Pokemon trainer, the amount of customization a lot greater than it is in a lot of other games. Once you have your trainer the way you want them you are ready to start catching Pokemon! The pokeball appears at the bottom of the screen on your phone and you tap and swipe in the direction of the Pokemon.
Each Pokemon has a certain combat power(CP for short) and this becomes a factor when you go to battle in gyms. You can increase your pomkemon's CP by leveling it up, which takes candy and stardust. Both of which require you to catch more Pokemon of that type. However, the higher level player you are the more likely you are to encounter Pokemon with a higher CP.
The goal of the game is whatever you want it to be. You want to catch every type of Pokemon? Go for it! You want to take over all of the gyms in your hometown? By all means! You want to add your highest level Pokemon to defend your teams' gym? Have a blast!
As you move around in the game you will see little square benchmarks that appear to open up as you get closer to them. These are called pokestops. When you are close enough for the pokestop to change to a circle tap on it and spin the inner coin. This will help you to refill your backpack. You can get pokeballs, eggs, potions, and revives. The higher the level of the player there are more objects that could appear. Sometimes you will only get two items from a pokestop and sometimes you will get seven or more. It is entirely chance.
Once you have collected items from a pokestop it will turn purple. After five minutes the pokestop will turn blue again and you will be able to collect more items from it. Aside from making purchases in the store, which uses real money, and what you get when you level up pokestops are the only way to get more items in your bag. So, if you use up all of your pokeballs on catching the rattata in your back yard you can get more by visiting the nearest pokestop.
So far, the only Pokemon in the game are the original 151. Typically, the Pokemon can be found in their 'natural environments'. So what does that mean? Late type Pokemon can be found near lakes, rivers, and beaches. This means that you are more likely to find that squirtle by a lake or river than you are in an open field. I've heard that fire type Pokemon tend to be found of gas station and summer heat. I have only been able to find them when the heat of the day is at its highest. Nearly all of the bulbasoar that I have found have been in grassy areas.
Some Pokemon can be evolved to their next level. To get them to evolve you need a certain amount of that Pokemon's candy. The Pokemon with more evolutions need more candy to evolve. Typically you will need around 25 - 50 candies to evolve a Pokemon. Typically, Pokemon will get a higher CP as they evolve. However, not all Pokemon can go through an evolution. For these Pokemon you can increase their strength by powering them up.
If you end up catching two of the same Pokemon, which you certainly will, you can transfer one back to the professor. When you catch a Pokemon you get three of that Pokemon's candy. When you transfer one you will get an extra candy. So if you catch two charmander and one has a CP of 105 and the other a CP of 375, you will get 6 candies for catching them and then an extra candy for transferring the lower one back to the professor. This leaves you with seven candies. This will help you to evolve your higher level Pokemon faster.
At this point, it is safe to assume that you will need to catch the basic form of each Pokemon before you are able to come across its more evolved form in the wild. This means that will need to at least have caught a charmander before you will be able to catch a wild charizard.
Sometimes you will get eggs from pokestops. There are three different eggs: 2k, 5k, and 10k. In order to hatch your egg you will need to place it in an incubator and walk a specific distance: 2 kilometers, 5 kilometers, or 10 kilometers. The Pokemon that hatch from 10k eggs are rarer than the Pokemon that you will get from a 2k egg. However, no matter what Pokemon you hatch from your egg it will have more candy than the Pokemon you would catch in the wild.
When the egg is ready to hatch it will pop up on your screen. You simply need to tap the egg and it will crack open and reveal your new Pokemon. Once your egg has hatched you can begin the process all over again if you have more eggs and incubators. As you are only able to carry 9 eggs at a time you want to hatch them as quick as possible so that you are able to collect more eggs to increase your chances of getting a Pokemon that you do not already have.
Some of the incubators are only good for three uses and others are good for an indefinite amount of uses. If you have two incubators it is best to have them both incubating at the same time, that way you are able to hatch two Pokemon.
Have you played PokemonGo yet?
Gyms are real world locations that you can go to, to either train your Pokemon or battle opposing teams. If you are on the Blue Team and you go to a gym that is controlled by the Blue Team you can train your Pokemon my battling the Pokemon at the gym. Each time you battle a teammate's Pokemon you will earn prestige for the gym itself and XP for yourself. Once you reach a certain amount of prestige for the gym you will be able to place your own Pokemon in the gym. Your Pokemon will be able to defend the gym from opposing teams that are looking to take it over. The more Pokemon of a high CP defending a gym the higher a prestige. Both of which will make it harder for opposing teams to take the game.
If you are Team Yellow and you come across a gym that is controlled by the Red Team you can chose to battle it. You will be able to pick your top six Pokemon to fight the Pokemon that defend the gym. The more battles you win the closer you get to defeating the gym. If you reduce the prestige of the gym enough the lower level Pokemon defending the gym will be returned to their trainers. This makes it easier to defeat the gym. Once all of the opposing team's Pokemon have been returned to their trainers you will be able to put one of your own Pokemon inside. This will also give the gym to your team.
Each time you are able to place a Pokemon in a gym you are able to collect 500 stardust and 10 coins from the shop. However, you are only able to collect on this once every 21 hours. So, if you think you are able to take a few gyms at the same time you will want to wait until you are done to collect. Having Pokemon in gyms is the only way to earn coins, which are used to get things ar the shop, without buying them with real money.
The Original Pokemon Rap
Each time you reach the next level you will get more pokeballs and sometimes other useful things to help you in the game. You level up by earning XP. You can get XP by catching Pokemon, catching a new Pokemon will give you more XP than catching one you are lady have. You can also get it by training at a gym, winning battles at opposing gyms, and visiting pokestops.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that it is a game. Games are meant to be fun. So, go out and have fun seeing what kinds of Pokemon are in your area. Do what you want with the game. If battling gyms makes you happy, I hope you win all your matches. If catching as many Pokemon as possible brings you joy, I hope you find all of them. Most of all I wish you the best with your endeavors.
