Redguard Race And Their Names In Skyrim The Elder Scrolls V

Updated on January 18, 2012

Redguards are a physically strong human race. Redguards can be distinguished by their dark skin which can be in any shade between light brown and almost black but always with a slight red tint. They usually have coarse, wiry hair. Redguards are about average height and they are used to living in hot and dry climate. Their hardy constitutions and quick feet make them naturally talented warriors and scouts. Despite their skills and abilities a lot of Redguards have a very independent and freedom loving look at the life which makes them not so disciplined. Their pride usually makes them to become adventurers or thieves instead of soldiers. Redguards are quite adept in using magicka although they can't compete with the skills of Altmeri. In fact, Redguards find the arcane school of Conjuration immoral. They say it's a weak and wicked person that steals souls and play with minds. In spite of that, some other Redguards became quite proficient in the art of Destruction magicka and the Eastern magic 'Nudri-hi' making them great battle mages.

Redguard History

Redguards are also known as Yokudans because before they started to inhabit Tamriel, they lived in a continent west of it - Yokuda. In the ancient times the continent started to sink in the ocean because of volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. Some Redguard suspect that their wizards were causing the natural disasters to win the civil war which was going on in Yokuda ehrn the natural disasters took place. The warriors of Yokuda, known as Ra Gada set sail to the East and reached the Hammerfell province in Tamriel. 'Ra Gada' means 'forebearers' and they are the warrior class in Yokuda. The name 'Redguards' come from locals in Tamriel misspelling 'Ra Gada'. The noble class in Yokuda is called Na-Totambus, the 'Crown' which followed the warriors on their way to Hammerfell. Redguard warriors attacked Nede (human) and Mer (elven) settlements in Hammerfell and soon they had built stone strongholds and established a Redguard kingdom in Hammerfell. When Tiber Septim was proceeding on uniting all Tamriel, Hammerfell gladly joined under his rule because it had been weakened by yet another civil war. Both joining the Empire and the civil war lead to Redguards spreading all over Tamriel and becoming mercenaries. The local Redguard ruler at that time was Camoran Usurper also known as Haymon Hart-King. During the War of Betony in the middle of the Third Era the king was assassinated by Bretons which lead both races to engage in bloody battles In Illiac region which made them lose a lot of manpower. But then the Miracle Of Peace occurred - a divine artifact the Totem of Tiber Septim was found and with its help most of Illiac region got united. The 44 citystates of the region got united in four kingdoms under the rule of the Empire - Sentinel, Wayrest, Daggerfall, and Orsinium. At the beginning of the Fourth Era when the Empire signed the peace treaty with the Aldmeri Dominion to end the Great War, Redguards were unsatisfied with this decision. They continued to resist Thalmor - the Aldmeri Dominion forces. In order to preserve peace, the Empire chose to declare the independence of Hammerfell.

Redguard Society and Religion

Redguards are good sailors, farmers, brave warriors and even notable astronomes. They had their own language 'Yoku' but over time they adapted their language to make better contact with their neighbours. As the descendants of warriors most of Redguards are expected to have the basic understanding and skills in martial arts. But only the Ra Gada that excel in weaponry and battle are recruited in the military. The tactics and war strategies are usually developed and studied only by the highest ranks in military such as generals and marshals. The Redguard navy is one of the most notable in all Tamriel. Redguards have proven themselves in countless sea battles. Because of the military culture a lot of celebrations and holidays in Hammerfell are held to honor victories in the most important battles.
Redguards worship Satakal, the god of everything (which is very similar to the Nordic god Alduin). Satakal is the god of change - he sometimes destroys almost everything that exist to build a new world. The spirits that survive the end of one world become the gods in the next one. The main god of the lesser gods is Ruptga (Tall Papa) who was the first one to survive the death of the old world. Then there are also his wife Morwha, Zeht, Tava, HoonDing, Leki, Onsi, and Diagna. They are followed by lesser deities and other spirits, such as fairies.
