After its much anticipated global release, Star Wars The Old Republic (SWTOR) has finally grazed the world of MMO last December 2011. And judging by the reaction of the people who were lucky enough to become part of the first few to play the game, SWTOR really has a legitimate claim over the much-coveted title WoW-Eliminator (WoW is the acronym for World of Warcraft, a very popular MMO that has changed the online gaming experience of millions of people in the past decade). In just a little over 7 days, SWTOR was able to reach a staggering 1 MILLION registered players and the number continues to grow everyday. If you are a serious MMO gamer looking for an action-packed adventure combined with a very interesting story line, SWTOR is definitely a great game that you should look into.

As a fellow player, I am writing this hub to help you understand how crafting is accomplished in SWTOR. The approach of SWTOR when it comes to crafting is a bit different and it is important that you understand how it is done if you don't want to waste your precious time learning the wrong skills. I will cover every aspect of SWTOR Crafting as much as possible and also give some helpful hints and advice that help you plan ahead when it comes to allocating your Crew skills. If you want to dominate a game with a massive player population and fan base such as STWOR, you will need to READ FIRST BEFORE YOU PLAY!

SWTOR Crafting - The Basics

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REMINDER: Crew and Companions are the same, just different wordings.

Even for experienced MMO players, SWTOR Crafting is a bit tricky to fully grasp. You will really need a "noob-friendly" SWTOR Crafting Guide to make sure that you won't be pitched against the complicated nature of playing SWTOR. Unlike in other games where you are the one crafting your gears and gathering the needed raw materials to be able to create your gears, SWTOR introduced a little bit of a twist in this aspect of the game. Needless to say, the basic concept of crafting is still intact in SWTOR. The only difference is HOW you will gather the raw materials and WHO will craft the items for you.

As you go on through the course of the SWTOR, you will eventually acquire your very own Starship.. Along with that. you will also get the chance to meet 5 specific people that will become your Companions. If you are a Republic, you will acquire your ship at the end of the Coruscant Storyline. Imperial players get theirs at the end of the storyline for Dromund Kaas. This occurs between levels 10-15 (Skipping other quests and missions make you acquire your ship faster, but it is up to you if you want to skip them. I DON'T RECOMMEND IT). Depending on your race and class, you will have a distinct set of Companions that can help you complete missions, finish quests and fight enemies. The Starship that you own will eventually become your Crew Headquarters and your Companions will now become a part of your personal Crew. Companions can permanently be acquired starting at level 8 and beyond.

YOUR COMPANIONS/CREW WILL GET A CHANCE TO LEARN SO-CALLED "CREW SKILLS" AS YOU MAKE PROGRESS IN THE GAME. THESE CREW SKILLS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF SWTOR CRAFTING BECAUSE THE 3 IMPORTANT SKILL TO BE ABLE TO CRAFT AND GATHER ITEMS ARE ALL INCLUDED UNDER THE CREW SKILLS.

After you acquire your own Starship, you will need to accomplish specific quests that will lead you to meet the Crew Skill trainers. These trainers will teach you Crew Skills which are very essential in SWTOR Crafting. Crew Skills as divided into 3 categories: MISSION SKILLS, GATHERING SKILLS AND CRAFTING SKILLS. You are only allowed to learn THREE Crew Skills, and at the same time you are also limited to master only ONE Crafting Skill. (There are no limitations for Gathering and Mission Skills). Learning Crew Skills and starting crafting begins as soon as you acquire a Companion and you have met your first trainer. You can find the crafting trainers on Coruscant (Republic), Dromund Kaas (Imperial) or the Fleet Space Stations. Most people agree that level 10 is the optimal time to start crafting, but your mileage may vary.

Crew Skills are important because they are the key to creating new items in SWTOR. Gathering Skills are responsible for acquiring the raw materials, after which you will need to utilize your chosen Crafting Skill to create a new item. Mission Skills are used to finish Missions and open up new paths in the game. At the same time, you can also acquire Mission Rewards depending on the Gathering Skill that you chose to learn. (Starts to get complicated now, eh?)

Acquiring the raw materials (Mats) is just a small part of the picture. After your Companion/Crew finishes a mission and returns with your material, you will still need to Craft the items from these Materials. You will gain some experience when you do crafting and it will allow you to craft better gears next time. For example, if you keep on Crafting Medicine Packs, you will soon gain enough experience to create Medicine Packs that restore higher health.

Crafting usually lasts from 1-3 minutes. Depending on your Crew / Companion's Affection towards you, you can decrease the time needed to do Crafting and even have a chance to produce better items. You can improve your relationship with your companions by giving them presents and choosing the right decisions during the course of the game. There are also Romantic Relationships that you can form with specific Companions so watch out for them!

WHILE YOU ARE OUT FIGHTING ENEMIES OR FINISHING QUESTS, YOU CAN OPT TO SEND YOUR COMPANIONS / CREW OUT ON MISSIONS. DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF MISSION AND GATHERING SKILL THAT YOU CHOSE TO LEARN, YOUR COMPANION WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO RETURN WITH AN ITEM OR A REWARD RELATED TO THAT MISSION. THIS MAKES GATHERING ITEMS EASIER BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO MISSIONS YOURSELF

FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU LEARN "ARCHAEOLOGY" AND YOU USE IT TO SEND YOUR COMPANION ON A MISSION, HE OR SHE WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO RETURN WITH ARTIFACT FRAGMENTS, COLOR CRYSTALS AND POWER CRYSTALS. THESE RAW MATERIALS CAN THEN BE USED TO CRAFT NEW ITEMS AND EQUIPMENTS, WHICH WILL ALSO DEPEND ON THE CRAFTING SKILL THAT YOU CHOSE TO MASTER. THIS MAKES CREW SKILLS INTERRELATED TO EACH OTHER.

When Crafting Equipments, you also have a chance for a "Critical Success" which allows your Crafted Item to possess an "Augmentation Slot". These Augmentation Slots are spaces where you can place Augments, a material that you can use to improve and enhance your gears. I havent's told you yet, but your Companions have Special Stat Bonuses that are unique to them (for example, the Companion of the Smuggler Class named Akavi Spaar has a +10 Bonus in Armortech Creation). In order to increase your chances of creating a "Critical Success" when crafting, find the Companion with the bonus for that specific skill to increase your possibilities of creating an Augmentation Slot.

Last but not the least, you can also use Gathering Skills not only for missions but also in real-time explorations. For example, the Gathering Skill called Archaeology allows you to examine crystal rock formations for possibilities of finding materials that you can utilize. In the same manner, Mission Skills can also be used in the World Map to open up new possibilities and instances. A good example of this is the Mission Skill called Investigation, which allows you to discover new missions that can further expand your gaming experience

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's see how many of us here have moved to the DARK SIDE of the Force =p

So, which side are you on?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like what I said, there are 3 different types of Crew Skills in SWTOR: Mission Skills, Gathering Skills and Crafting Skills. When you meet the Crew Skill Trainer, you can learn ANY THREE CREW SKILLS, but you are only limited to only ONE CRAFTING SKILL. Choosing what skills you want to master is very important because it divides the thin line between the Dominating and the Dominated.

Just a tip to remember, when you reach the right time (Around Level 10 when you start to acquire your own Starship) talk to all of the Crew Skill Trainers even if you don't want to learn the skills that they are teaching. You will gain experience just by talking to each and every one of them and it can really help especially in the early stages of the game. AND CHOOSE YOUR SKILLS WISELY!

One final note to add is the connection of the skills. As you should know by now, Gathering Skills support Crafting Skills because they provide the raw materials that you need in order to craft gear. (For example, the Gathering Skill Scavenging supports the Crafting Skill Armortech because Armortech needs Scavenged Metals in order to craft new equipments (Scavenged Metals can be acquired through the skill Scavenging). So if you want to make sure that you have full control over your resources, make sure you map the perfect set of Gathering Skills that will fully complement and support your chosen Crafting Skill. Remember, you can only learn three Crew Skills and one Crafting Skill. If you mess up in this, YOU ARE DOOMED! (No, i am not joking)

Hi Krissy, SWTOR and SWKOTOR (Knights of the old republic) really did a great job explaining the story of the Star Wars universe, even before Anakin and his era started. If you want to understand the real storyline of starwars, playing the Star Wars games is really a must!
