SkyBlock Minecraft Survival Island Map
SkyBlock is the most recent wildly popular Minecraft Survival Island map, a small block of dirt floating in the sky for all eternity. There are no secret chambers to explore, no mysteries to solve. Just some dirt, a tree and a chest. (There are a few more goodies to work with, but we'll get to them in a bit.) It's not the sort of map you might have expected to have garnered over a hundred thousand downloads, but let's face it, logic doesn't always apply to Minecraft and I can honestly say that this incredibly simple map is one of the most fun maps I've ever played, and it has surprising replay value as well.
The rules of SkyBlock island are simple. Stay on the SkyBlock. You might think this obvious because you are floating in the void after all, but I'm guessing if you're patient enough and you build a bridge long enough, Minecraft's inimitable world generation system will eventually create solid land for you to play on. Why the creator is so dead set on people staying on the grass dot is a bit beyond me, I'd have thought that escaping the blasted thing would have been a worthy goal, but instead you're encouraged to potter about on the grass until you simply can't stand the tedium anymore.
You might think that the scope for building on an island consisting entirely of dirt is limited, and you're sort of right, but the fact that you've got a tree there basically means that you can go on extending the island for eternity. One minecraft tree can lead to many thousands more. Trees are pretty much the rabbits of minecraft.
The Starting Chest
The starting chest contains quite a few surprising goodies, here's a list:
A bucket of lava.
Two blocks of ice.
12 pieces of string.
One red mushroom.
One brown mushroom.
One sugar cane.
Just like that, the game actually becomes quite interesting. You have the resources to make water and potentially grow wild grass and large mushrooms. Of course, you only have limited dirt, so how you do these things matters. The limited space and resources also create limited choices, which means that you must often choose between strategies. Some strategies end in victory, others in despair. On a map like this, every block of dirt is precious.
A Peaceful Minecraft Survival Map
There are very few survival maps which can be played on peaceful mode, but this is definitely one of them. It's not about fighting monsters as much as it is about allocating resources wisely and being patient. Though I was initially skeptical about the ability of such a small and simple map to provide entertainment, I could not recommend this map any more highly.
SPOILER / WARNING
Read this only if you want to get a tip that will save you a great deal of frustration and more than likely, one complete restart of the map.
It snows. This kills the sapling.
