Skyrim Skill Training: How to Train Smithing

Updated on January 8, 2017

Smithing is one of the most useful skills to train. This is because smithing increases both your attack and defense. Smithing is best trained alongside enchanting, because you can enchant your newly acquired smithed items. It is not too much more work and it will save you time and coins. That being said, read my article on enchanting before you begin smithing. Although I would not advise it, you may alternatively use a skill trainer to train smithing. Detailed information on how to do this will be included at the bottom of the article.

Step One to Train Smithing

You will need smithing supplies. Roughly everything you need requires leather or leather strips. For this reason, always pick up pelts when you come across them, as well as any random pieces of leather. If you would like to purchase supplies, go to Whiterun. As soon as you enter the town, you can purchase leather and leather strips from the woman working the forge. You can also go inside and purchase some more. Also, the Sky Forge near the upper left corner of the map (take the stairway near the Companions) will have some leather.

Step Two to Train Smithing

Go and create leather bracers at a forge. This will require one leather and two leather strips per brace. This item will maximize the resources to experience ratio. There are other items with the same ratio, but those items sell for less. When this is done, either enchant these bracers with soul gems in order to increase your enchanting skill, or sell them immediately. Either way, sell them so that you can at least get some of your money back. An alternative to making the maximum number of braces is to fix them up at an anvil. Either way will work.

Other advice

Always buy the supplies you need to create your armor and weapons for personal use before wasting your money on leather. Make sure to create your leather bracers before you work on your personal items, though, so that the equipment you use will be made with the highest skill possible.

Try not to get carried away improving this skill. Because smithing can drain away your gold, play the game and only train it when you’re conveniently in a town. Always pick up items while on your quests and sell them in town so that you have some funding for training this skill. Don’t forget to read my Hub on enchanting! You will save a lot of time maxing your character out if you train these two skills simultaneously.

How to train smithing with a trainer

I will now provide detailed information on how to locate trainers who will charge you to automatically level up a skill. Trainers can be used a maximum of five times per player level. This means that at any given level, you may only train any combination of skills five times. If you train smithing five times, you cannot train enchanting until you level. I will not provide all trainers, but instead provide the most efficient and easily accessible trainers only.

For smithing in particular, I do not advise you to use a trainer. It is costly and there are better skills to waste your money on considering how easily smithing is trained given the aforementioned method. Nonetheless, I will provide trainer information in case you decide not to heed my advice.

Conclusion on training smithing

If you discover other methods to train smithing, please feel free to comment below. I may have chosen to exclude certain tactics to train smithing (e.g. skill books), because those methods require a lot of research or are more convoluted than this simple tutorial. I may choose to update this article with more advise in the future. In the meantime, please consider following some of my other Skyrim tutorials!

I've found that if the NPC likes you you can use ice form to knock them over and when they unfreeze you can pickpocket the gold back when they are getting up without any chance of failing
