Skyrim skill training: How to train enchanting

Updated on January 4, 2017

An enchanting table.

Enchanting is a very important skill in Skyrim, and is therefore always worth training. A seemingly weak player can stand up to the sturdiest of bosses with good enchantments on weapons and armor. The only downside to enchanting is that it must be intentionally trained in order to rise to high levels. On the upside, enchanting is easily trained.

There are two ways to increase enchanting. The first is to break down a magical item to learn its magical properties. This is necessity in order to enchant something, but can only be done once per effect of enchantment. For this reason, the second method must be used to train the enchantment skill, which is to enchant a non-magical item. To save time, energy, and gold, I strongly suggest reading my Hub on How to train smithing as well, so that you can simultaneously train that skill with this one.

Although I would not advise it, you may alternatively use a skill trainer to train enchanting. Detailed information on how to do this will be included at the bottom of the article.

How to start enchantment training

Before you can enchant any item, you need soul gems. Unfortunately, soul gems are expensive. In order to make training enchanting even the slightest bit practical, you will have to track down and loot a Dwemer ruin. These ruins can be found throughout Skyrim, and are loaded with many different soul gems, many of which are already filled. Pick up as many as you can find, and head on out. You may need to fill some of them, so get a soul trap spell and target every creature you happen by as you play the game. If you get the opportunity, enchant your weapon with a soul trap enchantment. This will make your task less tedious.

Step two to training the enchantment skill

Find an enchanting pedestal. I always use the pedestal in Whiterun castle. Use your soul gems to enchant every item you are willing to part with. In order to make more money, check to see which enchantments sell for the most and use those ones (fire enchantments and the like raise the price of an item significantly.) Once you are out of either soul gems or items to enchant, sell the items to make a little cash and also to lessen your burden. Your skill will increase this way, whether you use the items you enchant or not. The reason I suggest reading my smithing Hub as well is because training smithing involves creating items, which may be used for binding enchantments. You will otherwise need to find a lot of enchant-able items, and that is a lot of extra work considering the advantage of training smithing in conjunction. Follow on to that Hub if you wish!

How to train enchanting with a trainer

I will now provide detailed information on how to locate trainers who will charge you to automatically level up a skill. Trainers can be used a maximum of five times per player level. This means that at any given level, you may only train any combination of skills five times. If you train smithing five times, you cannot train enchanting until you level. I will not provide all trainers, but instead provide the most efficient and easily accessible trainers only.

For enchanting in particular, I do not advise you to use a trainer. It is costly and there are better skills to waste your money on considering how easily smithing is trained given the aforementioned method. Nonetheless, I will provide trainer information in case you decide not to heed my advice.

Train with Sergius Turrianus up to Level 75

Sergius is available at the College of Winterhelm. You may need to complete dialogue and/or missions before his training services are offered. You should only have to join the college before Sergius becomes available as a trainer. To do this, talk to anyone at the college and follow their directions to join. Please follow the red arrow in the following pictures to find the trainer.

Train with Hamal up to Level 90

Hamal is available at the Temple of Dibella in Markarth. You may need to complete dialogue and/or missions before his training services are offered. Please follow the red arrow in the following pictures to find the trainer. Be advised, the temple is a few levels up, past the Temple of Talos. Hamal is inside the inner Sanctum. I need to pick an expert level lock in order to get to her, and then I had to complete a quest before her services were offered.

After fast traveling, to forward up the stairs, veer left past the Temple of Talos, immediately go left up more staircases, and you will find the Temple.

Conclusion on training enchanting

If you discover other methods to train enchanting, please feel free to comment below. I may have chosen to exclude certain tactics to train enchanting (e.g. skill books), because those methods require a lot of research or are more convoluted than this simple tutorial. I may choose to update this article with more advise in the future. In the meantime, please consider following some of my other Skyrim tutorials!
