Super Mario Brothers Chess Review

Updated on May 3, 2012

Super Mario and the game of chess come together in the collector edition Super Mario Brothers Chess. Your favorite Super Mario games characters are now the chess pieces! This is the first and only chess game to feature these hand-painted figurines. There are 32 pieces, including Yoshi, Luigi, Mario, and Princess Peach. On the other side, you have ruthless Bowser and his gang of thugs, which includes Birdo, Bowser Jr., and Goomba. The competition is on and it is sure going to be fun!

Measurements of the Super Mario Brothers Chess collector tin are 10.7 x 10.7 x 3.3 inches. Shipping weight is 3.4 pounds and the tin weighs 3.2 pounds. Children under three years old should not play this game because its small parts are a choking hazard.

Super Mario Brothers Chess includes:

  • Chess pieces and board feature Super Mario games theme
  • This is not your traditional game of chess, but something much more fun
  • Hand-painted figurines (32) feature Mario, Hammer Bros., Luigi, Magikoopa, Princess Peach, Birdo, Toad, Goomba, Yoshi, Bowser Jr., Bowser, and 1-Up Mushroom
  • Mario and the good guys compete with Bowser and his evil companions for chess domination
  • Figurines are labeled to indicate which chess piece they represent- ideal for beginning players
  • Tin designed for collectors
  • Game is great for young players or adults

Pros and Cons

  • Waterproof figurines are durable for use by children
  • Great change from video games
  • Learning is easy and fun due to good versus evil feature
  • High-quality game features reasonable price

  • Spikes on Bowser and son can fall off when pieces are used
  • Some pieces represent positions that could confuse children (ex: Luigi is the queen)
  • Board may break

Mario has jumped out of the video game world and onto a chessboard in this Super Mario Brothers Chess game. Designed as a collector edition, this Super Mario game can also be played using the 32 hand-painted figurines and themed chessboard. Each figure features a label indicating the type of playing piece it represents. Beginning players and children will get just as much enjoyment from this great game as experienced adults. Children can even use the figurines as characters in unrelated play. You will still want to teach them to use their strategic thinking caps by learning to play chess. Mario and the good guys are ready to defeat Bowser’s thugs to become the chess champions. This is one of those Super Mario games that everyone should own!
