Campaign Cartographer 3 may be targeted at tabletop gaming campaigns, but it is powerful and versatile enough to be used in any number of applications; CC3 is even recommended for professional map creation. It can be used for everything from continental maps to dungeon floor plans to wargaming maps.

Campaign Cartographer 3 also have a very broad variety of styles as well, from the highly stylized, to highly realistic maps that could come out of an atlas.

The biggest drawback of Campaign Cartographer 3 is its cost: $44.95 may be a little much for some hobbyists, but if you have the money to spare, CC3 is a great investment.

Dundjinni is the best mapping option for complex indoor maps. It comes with a great variety of objects, allowing the creation of complex scenes. It also includes a number of outdoor options, but it really excels at detailed interior maps.

Dungeon Painter

Dungeon Painter is the best in-browser map-making software available. As the name would suggest, it is best at creating the interiors of dungeons and castles. It doesn't have quite the texture and object variety of Dundjinni, but it makes up for it with its convenience. There is also a more robust pro version.

Dungeon Painter is free to use online, and the pro version is available on Steam for $14.99.
