The Buchannon Legacy Chapter One
Welcome to the Buchannon Legacy Challenge!
If you haven't had a chance to see it yet, you might want to read over my Introduction to the Buchannon Legacy. Those who are unfamiliar with the challenge may find this page helpful. Readers who want to follow the legacy should be able to do so from the introduction page.
To recap, I'm starting out with legacy founder Cordelia Buchannon. She is a Cheerful Genius who Loves the Outdoors, and she aspires to be a Freelance Botonist.
Like all legacies, Cordelia Buchannon's starts out in the simplest of ways: On the lawn of a large lot in Willow Creek. With only §1,800 to her name, she has little money to build with, and even a starter home is out of the question. If she wishes to have a comfortable bed and a high-quality refrigerator, she's going to have to work hard to earn the money to develop her home.
If she's lucky, she will find a husband and get off the lawn before the second generation comes along. Few legacy founders are so lucky, but Cordelia has a generous watcher who has done research to determine the best ways to make money at home.
I recommend to those who are starting out with the legacy challenge to have the founding generation work on earning money at home as much as possible. In Cordelia's case, I've decided to focus on gardening, which can ultimately net more money than even painting. She'll be working, but only so that I can experiment with the new features in "Get to Work." I'm debating whether or not the first generation spouse should hold a job.
Cordelia, being a genius, understands that all jobs come with a cost: Daily tasks that much be performed each day. In order to avoid starting her first day without completing the task, she decides that her first order of business is to find a job in the Science Profession.
With that task out of the way for the day, she is free to spend the day as she pleases. Work will start tomorrow, and Delia wants to be prepared with a good mood for her first day of work.
The plan is to find a husband -- today.
The daily task for the Science Profession is to "have breakthroughs." This can be a time consuming process to make happen because of the fact that the player has no control whatsoever over whether or not the sim is going to have a breakthrough. It happens during certain activities, such as fishing, gardening, or even showering. Breakthroughs seem to be more likely while using Science equipment at work.
Cordelia heads to the library and instantly sits down to have a talk with the librarian, a Mr. Ishmael Leavitt. He seems like a great person, and he is incredibly receptive to her talk about Alien Theories and the Great Outdoors. Because she doesn't have any friends from her old life before starting her Legacy, Delia appreciates the attention.
Ishmael responds well to Cordelia's talk. He's attractive, and he's young. With so many elders and older adults in Willow Creek, she knows that she's going to have to make her move, or wait until another suitable young adult comes along. He seems nice, and his love of books appeals to her genius trait.
Two attempts at a legacy for Delia have failed, in both cases due to losing progress because of glitches with Get to Work. The science career is bugged, crashing the game if you join your sim at work. There's a fix for it (see the next chapter after this one for more information), but every time you start a new game, you have to fix it again. Anyway, both of the previous times, Cordelia struggled to get sims to accept her flirts. I'm pretty sure at this point that sexual orientation is assigned at some point by the game itself. While she had an easy time with friends, she struggled with romance.
Knowing that she has limited time in which to have children, complete her aspiration, and reach the top of her career, Cordelia realizes that she has to make a move or risk waiting too long to bring on the second generation. Her children (and their children) will have more time to worry about their aspirations and high school will help them to make it into a higher point in their careers more quickly. It will always be more of a struggle for her (or any legacy founder) and so she has to make her move quickly.
It starts with a little bit of flirting. Ishmael seems to respond to this well, much to Delia's great pleasure and surprise.
Their romance bar filled so quickly that it shocked me. It's a rare day that I have a sim who can even get the "ask on date..." interaction within the first sim day, but Delia did it quite quickly with Ishmael. I believe they had excellent chemistry.
Delia surprises Ishmael with a first kiss he wasn't expecting, and much to her surprise, he kisses her back. The romance is charging along quite nicely now, and she's confident that the second generation will be on its way by morning. Watcher tells her not to count her chickens before they're hatched and that we've been down this road together before, but she dismisses the voice and continues to woo her beloved.
Can't you just see the red haired Anna (Cordelia) asking Elsa for permission to marry Hans (Ishamel) after only a few hours together? I'm reliving Frozen here!
Before Ishmael can leave work for the day without her, Cordelia rushes after him for "one last thing." She wants to ask him to be her boyfriend. Ishmael quickly accepts and the two share a "happy dance" of joy as they confirm that they want to be in a relationship with one another.
The only thing to do next is to propose, but Cordelia's a little bit nervous about it. She'll need a few more romantic interactions before she goes there.
I'm always uncomfortable going into a proposal because in recent games, it always gets rejected, and mortified sims can die of embarrassment. Since the proposal always results in the mortified moodlet, this is a real concern.
In the hopes of getting the ball rolling on this Legacy, Cordelia decides that it's time to propose marriage to Ishmael. He seems to like her, and she definitely likes him. Even if it is early in their relationship, this seems like the thing to do.
She gets down on one knee in front of her love and pulls out a ring she purchased in preparation of her legacy and...
He rejects her! Cordelia is mortified by his rejection, but is determined to make the relationship work. She tosses out a few more romantic socials, including a massage for her beloved, and attempts to get their relationship stronger so that she can try again.
Cordelia is one determined woman!
This is what I was worried about. Both relationship bars were about halfway full at the time that she proposed to him. Getting the relationship bars more full should help the situation.
After several romantic socials, Delia is ready to try again. A child stands by as she drops down onto one knee and offers the same ring she offered before. Her heart beats quickly as she hopes that he will accept the proposal so that they can get on with building their family. There is no question in her mind that Ishmael is the one that she wants.
As Cordelia offers the ring to Ishmael, the kid standing near them grins. Obviously he knows something that she doesn't know. If she takes her cues from him, she will have less to worry about. One more "mortified" moodlet and this legacy could be over before it's even started!
Fortunately, Ishmael accepts the proposal this time, and the two of them are married right away, right there outside the library.
My game was freezing up at the time that she proposed this second time. She froze in front of him for two sim hours before she finally dropped down to one knee. By that point I had already gotten the "Engaged" moodlet so that I had a "spoiler" to tell me what was going to happen.
It froze up again during the wedding and I didn't get any pictures. Since it was an elopement, they didn't give me much to photograph anyway. Assume at this point they got married immediately (because they did).
After they are married, Cordelia and Ishmael are hungry, so they head to the park to eat some baked potatoes that someone cooked and left out. Maybe they left it out just for them! The Watcher warns them about eating random food, but they brush her off and continue to eat whatever they want anyway.
I had them spend this time on the public lot to give the plants in the area some time to grow. This lot -- the one with the museum, library, bar, and gym -- has roses on it. These are one of the highest-value plants that a starter sim can grow, and I wanted to give them time to sprout so that I could plant a bush at the home lot. My recommendation is to spend as much time as possible in every neighborhood as early on in the legacy as possible so that you can get all the plants available without going into space, fishing, or grafting.
Ishmael joins the household with §20,000 that the Watcher has to remove from the family funds. He is a Neat Bookworm (with no third trait) and a Bestselling Author Aspiration. Inside the library, he sets straight to work on his first book: A children's book so that he can build up his writing skill. Cordelia hasn't even begun on her aspiration, so this is a step in the right direction.
Ishmael is a young adult and since I was able to get them married on the first day, I have his entire adult lifespan to achieve his Aspiration, and this one tends to be easy for me, so I'm eager to see him actually do it. The current plan is not to have him working away from home, but if I can line his career up with Delia's, I might go ahead and put him in the writer career. He'll go to work and I can go to work with Delia.
Since Delia is in dire need of fun, she goes to play Sims Forever while new hubby Ishmael works on his book. She's across the library from him, but they still feel close. By this point, their relationship with one another has skyrocketed.
When Ishmael's book is finished, the two of them head home for the first time. By the time they arrive, their new appliances have been delivered, giving them a toilet, a shower, a double airbed, a fridge, a counter, and a stove. They have §5 left in the bank by the time it's finished, so Delia sells some of her flowers to bring them up enough to have a meal and then the two of them get ready for bed.
After dinner, the new couple make their first attempt to bring in the next generation. Cordelia's hoping that it happens quickly because she feels that having children early will leave them with more time to work on their aspirations and their careers...
Does Ishmael resemble Hans, from Frozen?
Is Cordelia pregnant? What will happen at her first day of work? You'll find out in the next chapter of the Buchannon Family Sims 4 Legacy Challenge!
And one last question. Do you think that Ishmael looks an awful lot like Hans from Frozen? Vote to the right!
Want to Play a Legacy Challenge?
While rules for the Legacy Challenge have been created for Sims 2, Sims 3, and Sims 3, my legacy is created with The Sims 4, which I believe is the best game so far in the franchise. The base content alone is incredible, and the emotions dynamic makes for a unique skilling experience. With the DLC (downloadable content), the game only improves. Monthly patches have provided new content each month for free, making this the best game in the franchise for cost/pleasure ratio.
If you want to play a Legacy Challenge, you'll need either The Sims 2, The Sims 3, or The Sims 4. You can get your copy of The Sims 4 to the right, if you'd like to play with the beautiful scenery you'll be seeing throughout my legacy!
