The Disappointment of Call of Duty:Black Ops 3
Throughout the years, the Activision video game publishing incorporation has made several games, like Skylanders or Guitar Hero, but the company is most famous for making the Call of Duty franchise. Activision started making these Call of Duty games in 2003. Call of Duty is a first person shooter game where you can choose to play against other people in the multiplayer category, play the campaign, or play a separate special category. The special category changes depending on the game. In multiplayer, there are multiple different game modes, like team deathmatch, which is the most popular among all the game modes, where the objective is for teammates to kill a certain amount of enemies in a limited amount of time. There is also domination, where the objective is for two team to fight each other for the control of different flags across the map, or search and destroy, where the one team has to plant a bomb and the opposing team has to try and kill them or defuse the bomb before it explodes. The Call of Duty franchise has sold about 252 million copies, going from its first game selling 6.5 million copies, all the way to Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, selling 32.5 million copies. Releasing in November of 2015, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 has been the best selling Call of Duty game so far, and the best selling game in all of 2015, but for that many people to buy the game doesn’t make any sense, since the game isn’t really all that great.
Call of Duty has three developing companies: Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games, and every Call of Duty game alternates developers. The Black Ops series, which is the most popular Call of Duty series by far, has been developed by Treyarch. The Treyarch company is the best selling out of the three because it started and, has kept, in all of its games, the game mode of Zombies. This game mode consists of up to four people battling waves of zombies to try and get to the highest wave they can. Even though the Black Ops series has succeeded in drawing people to buy their games, Black Ops 3 has taken some risks.
Zombies is most likely the main reason why the black ops series has been the best selling all these years, but in Black Ops 3, the zombies mode has a problem. Without the downloadable content, or dlc, players only have one map available to them, which gets old pretty quickly. In Black Ops 2, players without the dlc have 3 maps with different game modes, and in the original Black Ops, they have 2 different maps without the dlc. The dlc for all of these games cost 15 dollars per map pack, or buy the season pass, which includes all of the map packs, for 50 dollars. This is very costly, especially since the game already costs 60 dollars, so most people don’t buy it at all.
In Activision’s last Call of Duty game, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, they implemented a new playing style in the game, which was the use of a jet pack. A lot of people hated it, but since the game was clearly selling very well, they implemented the feature in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 as well. Many people bought the game hoping that the use of jet packs would at least be better, movement wise, than in the game before. Even though Black Ops 3 sold about 3 million more copies than its previous black ops game, Black Ops 2, there have been more players, on average, that have played Black Ops 2. There has been less players, on average, that have played Black Ops, but back when the first Black Ops released, it won many awards and it was one of the best selling game of all time, and as of August 2011, it sold 25 million copies. Obviously, more people prefer the original style of playing rather than the more futuristic style, but the company probably is not aware because later this year they are releasing another Call of Duty game called Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which will have jetpacks as well and is set, of course, in space.
The only good thing in Black Ops 3 is all the customization opportunities. In the story mode, or campaign, of the game can be played with more than one person and they can choose and customize the character’s appearance, which is new for Call of Duty campaigns. In addition to that, the campaigns in previous Black Ops games are exciting, but very short. However, in Black Ops 3, the campaign is way longer, lasting about 14 - 15 hours to complete, while the other games it only took about 5 hours to beat. In multiplayer mode, gun and character customizations are new as well. In the first Black Ops, the only customizable thing was the character’s face, and it could only be added face paint to it, but Call of Duty dropped that idea. For about four of their games, the games didn’t have any customizability other than the ability to change the color of the gun, but in Black Ops 3, the player can customize the character’s gender, their clothes, and voice. In this game, the player also has the ability to create their own skins for their guns, and adding to that, even customizing the attachments for that gun.
Black Ops 3 is not a great game to buy since it has so many bad parts to the game. Buying the game with the dlc will cost about 110 dollars, and that’s clearly not worth it. There are so many other first person shooter games where the dlc is not needed and can get the full experience without it, like Fallout 4 or Overwatch. The Black Ops series sales were skyrocketing, but Black Ops 3 stopped that trend. Black Ops 3 is the last Call of Duty game to have the authentic Black Ops Zombies game mode in it, and some people even say that it’s the last game in the Black Ops series, and if the rumors are true, then what a bad way to ending a great series.
