The Sims 4: Babies, Pregnancy, and Children

Updated on December 5, 2014

So, you want to add a new Sim to your household. In the Sims 4, Pregnancy can be a little fast, and taking care of a baby can be a little different then what you might expect, so this guide will take you through the steps of adding on to your Sim family.

Getting Started

While you might want to start off with one right away, in The Sims 4 babies are only available once you've started your household. There are two ways of getting a baby, through WoHoo and adoption. If you choose adoption you will require a computer. Open up the Household option and select the Adopt option to start the process. This costs $1000, but also gives you a child immediately. When adopting you can choose to adopt a baby or a child. If you pick a child they will come with their own Aspirations and Traits.

If you choose to create your own it will require a male and a female Sim that have a romantic relationship already going strong. Once you're at this stage you will be able to choose the Romantic option of "Try for Baby", or click on a bed and choose the same option. Each time you WoHoo with this option there will be the chance that your female sim will become pregnant.

Sims can do many normal activities while pregnant.

You're not going to know if this worked until you're female Sim gets her first bout of morning sickness or you take a pregnancy test. If you catch your Sim getting nauseated and praying to the porcelain god, you can afterwards click on the toilet and select the option of "Take Pregnancy Test". Technically you could take a pregnancy test directly after a WoHoo, but I personally find these instant results sucks the fun out of the discovery. If it comes back positive, your Sim is now Pregnant and in their first trimester.

I'm sure that anyone that had a real baby would kill for the speed of this pregnancy as each trimester only takes 24 hours to go through. You'll start to show during the second trimester, and during the third trimester the mother will really be showing. Other than the moodlets of happiness and nausea you get during the pregnancy, there really won't be any change to how your Sim goes about their daily life over these 72 hours.

At the end of the pregnancy you will have two options about where to give birth. If you've already purchased a bassinet and placed it in your home you can have your child at home. If you haven't done this, you will go to the hospital to have your baby, and a bassinet will be placed next to a bed. Click on the mother to choose the option you want.

Immediately after you have the child you can name them, and they will appear either within the bassinet that you already have in the home, or a new bassinet will appear with baby inside. Unlike other members of the family, at this stage of development in the Sims 4 babies are little more then objects to interact with. You can feed it, change it, or make funny faces at it, but the child won't take any independent actions on their own other then cry and let your Sims guess what it needs. When you are ready for your baby to become a child, click the bassinet and select the "Age Up" option. With a bit of glowy magic, your baby will pop out and become a child with the genetic background of both the mother and the father.

Children and Teens

Unlike teens, which are basically adults that can't marry or WoHoo, children are are unique in the world of Sims 4. Children have only four skills that they can increase under the special Child Skills categories of Creativity, Mental, Motor, and Social. Children also have certain items that only they can interact with such as toys, jungle gyms, and doll houses. Children also have unique aspirations. If you are able to meet these aspirations before you enter the Teen stage of life, select skills will be learned faster. Both Children and Teens go to school five days a week.

Do you prefer a random Sim child, or do you prefer to play around in the Sim creator?
