Updated on February 5, 2014

2013 resulted in yet another successful year for the gaming industry with the release of a variety of highly anticipated sequels which included the latest installments of the 'Grand Theft Auto' and 'Assassin's Creed' series to name a few. This year also saw the release of some new titles such as 'The Last of Us', which truly amazed every PS3 owner out there with it's jaw dropping visuals and compelling storyline. PC gamers also had their fair bit of the action with the release of 'DOTA 2' amongst the titles worth mentioning. Many indie titles also managed to impress and proved that video games with smaller budgets than that of their billion-dollar industry counterparts had as much of a chance to be a success as them.

The gaming world also saw the release of the highly anticipated next generation of consoles including the Xbox One and the PS4 back in November to give a glimpse of what the future holds for your average gamer out there. During the short time that has passed since their release, both the consoles have impressed to some extent with their improved performance and ability to run more heavier games coupled with their improved graphical user interface (GUI) to navigate fluidly through the different functional offerings of the consoles. To sum up, the release of the next generation of consoles has set us up for an interesting 2014 ahead which will see a whole host of new titles being released that will test these new systems to their limit where gamers will be looking to get the complete experience out of their games, where only an immersing storyline will not make the cut.

With that said, now lets countdown the top 15 video games that you must play before the turn of the year;

15) Gears of War: Judgement

Date of Release: 19th March 2013

Platform(s): Xbox 360

Genre: 3rd person shooter

'Gears of War: Judgement' is the 4th installment in the Gears of War series which sees the return of Lieutenant Damon Baird and Private Augustus "The Cole Train" Cole who have also featured in previous Gears of War titles along with new characters Sofia Hendrick, Garron Paduk, Colonel Ezra Loomis and Karn. The game's storyline is played in flashbacks as Lt. Damon Baird and his team attend a COG military hearing due to the unauthorized use of a light mass missile which leads them to recall and explain the events that unfolded in order to clear their name with a death penalty hanging over their heads. The game also introduces 2 new survival and overrun game modes which replace the Horde and Beast modes known to the those who have followed the series from day one. Gears of War: Judgement earned mix reviews upon its release with some players criticizing the exclusion of the 2 classic multiplayer modes (Horde and Beast modes) while some praised the change the game has undergone. Even though it is an Xbox 360 exclusive, this shooter is one not to miss out on.

14) State of Decay

Date of Release: 5th November 2013

Platform(s): Xbox 360, PC

Genre: Open world survival horror

GameSpot Rating: 8.0

IGN Rating: 8.9

State of Decay is an open world adventure which takes you into a world ravaged by a zombie apocalypse where are you have to survive by any means necessary. The game puts you into the shoes of Marcus Campbell, a normal store clerk like any other who on his return from a fishing trip finds out that the world he left behind has descended into hell. The story then progresses with Marcus trying to find a way out of this zombie apocalypse with the help of other survivors. The gameplay mechanics that are displayed are very impressive to say the least with the silencers on guns breaking off if used for a long time and wooden sticks shattering into pieces if used often. The players are also able to drive cars to let off some steam from constantly being chased by zombies. Completing missions also triggers world changing events and the introduction of newer and tougher zombies which are harder to down all of which makes the game more challenging. The absence of an online multiplayer mode is a little disappointing along with the numerous glitches which see zombies glide through walls with ease but overall, the game does not fail to deliver a unique experience. A must play for all the zombie obsessed people out there.

13) Path of Exile:

Date of Release: 23rd October 2013

Platform(s): PC

Genre: Online Role Playing Game

GameSpot Rating: 8.5

IGN Rating: 8.8

Path of Exile is a free to play online role playing game developed by Grinding Gear Games. The game is set in a dark fantasy world full of mysterious creatures ranging from skeletons to vicious wildlife which can be found in every corner of the game's large map. The game follows a familiar pattern like many other RPGs as you are given quests by different AI controlled characters in game which when completed progress the storyline. The game takes inspiration from Diablo II, another famous RPG and adds to it elements which every RPG player is familiar with making the game a new adventure into the unknown whilst helping the player maintain familiarity with the basic controls of the game. The game allows you to choose and make your character from 6 different character classes, in addition to one more which is unlocked when you complete the game on normal difficulty. The game does have it shortcomings though as the player vs player mode only contains a limited number of content where players are restricted to waiting in long queues to join a game while staying only in a specific part of the map while waiting for their turn. Other than that, the game is one that will not disappoint any RPG player, especially if you can get your hands on it for free and require only an internet connection to play.

12) Defense of The Ancients 2 (DOTA 2)

The players must work together in order to demolish the other team's central structure (known as the Ancient) situated in their spawn area while at the same time leveling up their character to unlock more powerful attacks and spells on order to win. The 2 teams spawn in separate corners of the map which are linked withe 3 different pathways which connect both the sides with the rest of the map covered with forests. The players fight it out in order to enter the team's base and destroy their tower. Along with the players, there are AI controlled characters as well known as Creeps which also help the players in their attack on the opposing team. The 3 pathways also have 3 additional towers on each pathway which attack the enemy players and fend off their attacks. 11) Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

Date of Release: 30th April 2013

Genre: First Person Shooter

GameSpot Rating: 8.5

IGN Rating: 8.0

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is an expansion pack of the successful Far Cry 3 game developed by Ubisoft. The game is set in the year 2007 where the Earth has been ravaged by a nuclear war between the USA and the Russia. The game is based on a retro 80's theme with a futuristic and technological touch to it. The player takes control of a cybernetic super soldier named Rex Colt who must stop Colonel Sloan and his cyborg army from reverting the world into one which resembles the prehistoric times. The game implements a nice touch of symmetry between the hysterically absurd dialogues which can be heard in many movies from the 80's with the huge and explosive firepower which you are given to use. The other elements such as the old arcade game-type cut scenes along with the blood dragons which shoot lasers out of their eyes make it into an unforgettable experience and for just $15, the game delivers a lot of thrill and laughter for a bargain price.

10) Tomb Raider

The game is very interesting due to its adventurous gameplay which is heavily dependent on its well crafted story. The game also boasts good graphics which coupled with its unique storyline immerses the player in the character of Lara. Although the multiplayer aspect looks hurried and unoriginal, the game is definitely a step in the right direction and does no harm to its reputation.

Date of Release: 29th October 2013

Genre: First Person Shooter

GameSpot Rating: 8.0

IGN Rating: 8.0

Battlefield 4 is the latest installment in the Battlefield series which sees a significant improvement as compared to the previous titles. Even though the campaign mode fails to impress as it has done throughout the series with only a handful of edge of the seat moments, it's the multiplayer mode where the series has seen success and the developers have rung in a number of changes to make the game much more appealing and fun to play as compared to it's predecessors. The game introduces a brand new multiplayer mode named Obliteration mode where the 2 teams must battle for control of a bomb with the first team to destroy the 3 given enemy positions winning. Naval warfare has also been given emphasis to in Battlefield 4, introducing more technicality to the game and to offer more of a challenge. 6) FIFA 14

Date of Release: 24th September 2013

Platform(s): Xbox 360, PS3 and PC

Genre: Sports

GameSpot Rating: 8.0

IGN Rating: 9.1

The latest edition of the FIFA series sees some significant improvement from FIFA 13 in various areas which improves the game and makes it more fun and challenging to play at the same time. FIFA 14 has been improved to make it feel more realistic with the crowd more noisier than ever before, cheering and booing the opposing players more furiously as well as calling the referee to blow the whistle to end the game. FIFA 14 also introduces a somewhat re-worked gameplay where the players do not have a perfect first touch except a few which makes keeping possession of the ball all the more difficult. FIFA 14 also makes players focus more on building their attacks slowly and carefully with precise passes and waiting for the perfect opening rather than just kicking a through ball over the top to the striker every time, thus making attacking a bit difficult as compared to the previous versions. Doing skills during the match has also been made easier with players only needing to flick the right analog stick rather than a combination of the LT or RT with the right analog. The AI also has a stark difference with the AI controlled players more difficult to dispossess this time around. A new challenge in the famous series awaits and one which should not be missed out on.

The games takes you to various destinations across the world with most of the missions set in the Caribbean. The player will come across an array of structures including forts and jungles and can also hunt on both land and at sea. IGN Rating: 9.4

Bioshock: Infinite is set in the year 1912 in the fictional city of Columbia which is suspended in the air by balloons and blimps and is home to the elite class of people and where racism is at it's peak. The player takes control of a character named Booker De Witt, a man sunk in an insurmountable debt who is sent to the city of Columbia to rescue a girl named Elizabeth who has the ability to open tears in order to clear his debt forever. The game is heavily reliant on the characters which provide for a movie like experience for the player. The game takes the player into a fictional world where the elite white people reside in lavish surroundings whereas the black community is forced to work as their slaves with no future of reaching the levels occupied by the elites. The story follows a dramatic and thriller type of genre which lets you take control of both Jodie and Aiden, with each character having different characteristics and perks. 1) Grand Theft Auto V

Date of Release: 17th September 2013

Platform(s): Xbox 360 and PS3

Genre: Action Adventure

GameSpot Rating: 9.0

IGN Rating: 10.0

Grand Theft Auto V was undoubtedly the most biggest and highly anticipated game of 2013 which saw it sell copies worth $800 million worldwide in the first 24 hours since its release. The story allows you to play as 3 characters; Michael, a man under protective custody of the police who wants to forget his past, Franklin, a small time repo man wanting to hit the big time and Trevor, a disgruntled hot head who have stories intertwined with one another and will see them doing various missions with each other. The story follows up from a bank robbery gone wrong which sees Trevor escape and Michael presumed dead as they, along with a third member faced complications during the heist. The game has a lot of mature content which sees the 3 foul mouthing each other more often then not. This along with GTA V's open world is one to marvel upon which sees a variety of side missions with characters with extremely interesting narratives to which we have grown accustomed to in GTA series. I need not say more about the game which has taken the gaming world by storm since releasing it's first title.
