The Ultimate Classic RPG Guide for New Gamers: Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume

Updated on August 8, 2011

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume is one those rare instances where a sequel can stand against the original. I'm not saying this title outshines the original Valkyrie Profile, but the entire game was reworked into something special all on it's own.Having played the original Valkyrie Profile helps you understand the story right away, but isn't necessary. You'll be able to catch up on the story as it progresses.

When the infamous Valkyrie decided to take Wylfred's father, it turns his entire world upside down. Distraught, his mother loses her sense of reality. Wyl's younger sister also passes soon after due to illness. Turning his heart to cold stone, he swears to take vengeance upon the Goddess of Death. Along the way, you'll find allies who can either be your friends or your sacrifices. Wyl is given the Plume of Destiny, in which you can sacrifice your partners to gain extraordinary powers. As you may have guessed, once a member is given to the plume, they are gone forever. Beware though, each person sacrificed has drastic effects on your game. The places you go, people you meet and all the allies you may find all change based on decisions that you have to make.

Covenant of the Plume has multiple endings that you can obtain. Similar to titles like Chrono Trigger and Silent Hill, these endings can range from "good" endings to "bad" endings. Mind you, it is extremely difficult to get the best ending your first time through. Watching each ending and playing each available character gives the title a huge replay value.

Battle is very similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, in the essence that it's your team vs. the enemy team on a field. You select where each unit moves and their attacks. The idea is to surround an enemy unit and chain each attack for big damage. If two fighters on your team are standing next to an enemy then both get the opportunity to attack simultaneously. Each character has their own special attack that they can utilize to help take down even the most deadly of foes.

Covenant of the Plume is about choices and making decisions. You have the plume, but that doesn't mean that you have to use it. Adversely, it's completely up to you which allies to sacrifice and when. Can you live without said character? How the game ends is ultimately up to you. This game truly defines the role playing genre. You are in control, and that is the way it really should be. We need more titles like this out there in the world.
