Top 10 Board Games for the family to enjoy

Updated on April 15, 2015

Why Board Games, When We Have Technology?

If your family has a teenager, you might get the moans and groans whilst they are attached to some sort of electronic device these days. Have you noticed, less and less children go out to play these days? Yet people wonder why the children look paler, fatter and become anti-social!

In our household we have a range of ages (5, 13, 26, 33 and 70) and it's not always easy to come up with an activity that everyone is happy to participate with and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Movies these days aren't too child friendly, games consoles and the elderly don't mix and teenagers just want to be doing there own thing!

So here are our top 10 games, we dig out that we all have fun playing together!

10. Scrabble

This classic game is fun for everyone, there are many variations including more child friendly ones with pictures to guide them.

Not only is this game fun, but it can help with your children's' vocabulary, spelling and problem solving. You could also question your child in understanding the word and using it as a sentence!

Remember to keep a dictionary close by to double check words after they have been placed!

9. Pictionary

Who doesn't love to play this? Everyone can get involved, even having your friends round to have bigger teams!

Again, there are variations of the game to either make it more challenging or easier for the younger players. It can help with hand-eye coordination, reading, team work and can be great fun for everyone!

8. Cluedo

Admittedly it may not be suitable for children too young, but without words like "killed" or "murdered" you could alter it to "hid" and other substitutions and it can be a fun game to play.

Problem solving and communication skills are improved and who doesn't like to solve a little mystery??

7. Monoply

There has to be hundreds of editions of this game, why is it so popular? Simple, it's fun!

Children can learn to manage money, understand penalties and property development!

The children additions have card and electronic readers to help with figures, however the classic version could help improve your child's mathematical skills.

6. Trivia Pursuit

There are many versions of this too; some specialising on cars, television programmes, cakes, you name it. However, if you do have a classic one it may be time to buy one more up to date.

This will test your child's general knowledge, and even if they don't get many of the answers; they could learn who the President of America is and When WWII ended.

5. Chess

You can start playing this at a very young age, and it will help with many developing mental and life skills. Pre-empting moves, problem solving, strategy and patience.

Like every other classic, there are many variations and styles. Who knows if you become experts you could try 3D Chess!

4. Guess Who

This is fun for everyone!Communication is key!!

Of course there are variations, of the game; but it is one that can be enjoyed by everyone!!

3. Battleships

Watch and determine each players strategy and problem solving!! This is great fun for everyone; but please remember to be careful and mindful of the small parts!!

2. Card Games

It seems vague but, a pack of cards can give you endless hours of fun!

Playing games like snap, poker, matching etc the children could also learn magic tricks from it too!

1. Twister

Everyone has or should have this! It's not the conventional board game however it is heeps of fun!!!

Test flexibility, hand-eye coordination, balance etc

Why Not Give Twister a Twist?

Why not...

Have a board game night with all the family? Dig out all your games, not just these, get Dominoes, Connect 4, Snakes and Ladders etc and have fun! Invite family and friends over to join in! People of all ages can participate!

With snacks, drinks and music it could be a fun filled night...who knows you could end up playing other games or making your own!!

It doesn't have to be a rainy day, or held inside. Why not take it outdoors? Have a BBQ! Make it a regular event that the family can bond and have fun together without the need of spending a fortune taking them to extortionate places or playing video games and watching films!

These games don't cost fortune, shop around and they will last forever (granted you don't lose all the bits; but Ebay do sell spares).

Which is your family favourite?

Great List of Games! I personally played 9 out of 10 and enjoyed them.

PS: Scrabble I enjoyed the least because of my small vocabulary and bad spelling.
