Fun Games for Family Game Night

Updated on November 12, 2012

Family game night is commonly made fun of in sitcoms as a boring way to spend time with one's family. In reality family game night can be fun activity for families to do together and help relieve stress built up during the work week.

Also if you simply need something to do with your kids to keep them busy one day any of these family oriented games will surely do the trick.

To get the most out of your family game night you need the best games. There are literally thousands of games made to pick from. Below I have compiled a list of fun family games for game night. The games I have chosen are games the whole family can enjoy.

Monopoly

Having sold over 200 million copies and printed in more than 20 languages Monopoly is one of the most recognizable games in the world, and it happens to be one of my favorites. It is a game of luck, chance and making alliances. Most monopoly games last hours and never get boring. Also if there are only two or three remaining players the players who have already been knocked out of the game can team up with the ones who still remain so nobody ever becomes left out!

This family games is best for families with children over the age of 12 because there are many rules that younger children may not fully grasp or enjoy, furthermore the math involved may be to difficult for younger children. Also, I recommended not having young children around when playing this game because there are many small pieces that may pose a choking hazard.

Jenga

Jenga is a game that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. The rules to Jenga are extremely simply: you simply stack the blocks in a 3x3 tower changing the direction of the blocks every layer, and each player removes a block from the tower without making it fall! The person who makes the tower of blocks fall loses. This game can be played with any number of players and you can customize the rules to fit your family.

Scrabble

Scrabble is the perfect game for a fun family game night. Whether played in teams or individually there is always an intense amount of competition in the air. Everyone will agree that this game is a blast however they may not agree on what actually counts as a word. An official scrabble dictionary may come in handy with this game to settle word challenges, which can be purchased anywhere scrabble is sold or may be found online. This game is perfect for families with children, however be warned that the small pieces may pose a choking hazard for children under 3.

Puzzles

Puzzles are a favorite activity of mine. They can be great for children of any age depending on the level of difficulty puzzle you decide on using. Puzzles with a low amount of pieces are great for young children and the pieces are usually large to prevent choking hazards, while puzzles with a large amount of pieces can challenge older children and provide hours of family fun and conversation. If desired your family may purchase puzzle glue to keep puzzles together after they have been put together indefinitely or simply take apart the puzzle for reuse.

Wii Games

Wii games are a great way to spend time with your family. There are many games for Wii that are a collection of mini-games and are specifically made for family night. The reason Wii is such a good gaming system for family night is because Wii requires you to be active in many games and many games can support up to 4 players.
