Best Video Games 2014

This is the second in the series tradition which I started last year, which I aim to keep going for some time, offering a well thought-out top 10 video games list for the year. 2014 has been an exciting year for gamers, as you may very-well know, as it is the first full year we have had complete access to the next gen consoles, with the introduction of the Xbox One and PS4.

However the list this year has changed slightly, as the list is now being done in countdown, from no.10 - no.1, rather than no.1 - no.10, as it is more exciting that way, with the excitement of a dramatic build-up to the no.1 video game this year.

The list this year has been done in mind of the next gen consoles, due to the excitement of its first full year out in the flesh, on the market for customers to buy. Interested in seeing last years list for 2013, then check out:

Here is 2013's best video games, including the hit titles we remember well, which left gamers gripping their controllers tight, for the gaming experience of the year. Also worth noting that these games are the safe titles to purchase, if your looking for a recent game release within the last year, which is cheaper, but still worth the money.

How I Chose the List!

Research! Research!... and more RESEARCH! That is how I chose this list, to be as blunt as possible.

The list is based on my personal opinion for which the top games this year are, as well as partly from the success of previously released titles before some of these sequel titles, to help determine whether or not some of these pending games should be put on this top 10 list, or not.

Some of the games in this list, I myself have personally played, but to offer a more realistic list, which is in all aspects useful, I have added 'pending release' titles (for 2014) as well as a certain few games I have not personally played (but have read many user reviews on, as well as storyline descriptions).

No.8 - Watch Dogs

Playable On: Nintendo Wii U, PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One

Genre: action, adventure

Release Date: OUT NOW- 27 May, 2014

A great game overall, with a difference! That is what I personally look for in the games I buy, and this game is just that, different. Looks a little like GTA 5 from first appearances, but trust me, when I say this game is not GTA, in any way, shape, or size. But something entirely unique, which demands credit for what it has achieved.

Reviewers seem to discredit this game by mentioning that it had a 2 year build up, which is bound to cause disappointment, but in all honestly, I'd only heard of this game on its release, so I had no expectations whatever, and I found the entire games experience to be my cup of tea! Like action-adventure games, then get ready for Watch Dogs.

Best word to describe Watch Dogs is a complete and utter PLEASURE- with pleasure being the word of course.

Its easy to get into, smooth from start-to-finish, allowing you to play as a hacker, which is done surprisingly well. A whole new concept which had not been done before this game, but rest assured there is plenty of ass-whooping to be done in the game, so its plenty fun to play.

  • Action- take the fight to the streets using weapons of your choice, to take control of any given situation you are able to also use the players hacking abilities.

The assassins back, in Unity, which has a whole new story, which seems like it could be the perfect addition to the franchise, as well as the perfect addition for the next-gen consoles.

Get some friends together for this release, as it has with it a co-op experience, which allows you to team up with 3 other players, to take part in a separate campaign which has been specifically created for the co-op experience.

Just another game to add to the pre-order list, as this is going to be a game we'll be playing again and again, as I'm sure we all remember doing back-to-back in the previous Assassin's Creed games.

An open world, with a story everyone's going to want to play, with all the things we love about Dragon Age. A once peaceful kingdom has turned into a land of evil, with dragons now darkening the skies.

No.5 - Wolfenstein: The New Order

Playable On: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One

Genre: action, adventure, shooter (first-person)

Release Date: OUT NOW- 20 May, 2014

This a feel-good first-person shooter, which brings to life everything a Wolfenstein fan could ask for as 'The New Order' is the best in the franchise so far, in my opinion.

If your into shoot-em-up games, then this one is a must-have this year, with a never ending amount of fun waiting to be had. Its never been so fun, shooting Nazi's quite literally limb from limb, as you can actually shoot enemies limbs off, if you get a good enough shot. This is something we don't see enough in first-person shooters today, so enjoy this game for what it is, a serious shoot-em-up game, awaiting your full attention.

A worthy addition to the video game library this year, and one game everyone has on their wish-list this Christmas (if they're into first-person shooters).

Please check out the 'Trailer' above for a taste of what to expect.

No.4 - Titanfall

Playable On: PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One

Genre: action, adventure, shooter (first-person)

Release Date: OUT NOW- 14 March, 2014

This is an all multiplayer game so Xbox owners must have Xbox Live. Developed by Respawn Entertainment, whose founders originally worked for Infinity Ward (developers of the Modern Warfare franchise), have created an online based world which feels a lot like Call of Duty, except with robot giants (known as Titans).

You play as Pilots which means fighting from the ground, with the typical assault rifles, which is plenty fun to be honest, in well-balanced maps, with whole variety to keep the gamer infused by different places to battle. The game holds up to a maximum of 12 players in each game, which is 6-v-6, which is enough, considering the fact that there are also Titans battling on the map, as well as additional AI characters.

A fan of Call of Duty? Then you'll immediately find yourself immersed into the Titanfall game, which has a distinct C.O.D.: Modern Warfare franchise feel, which leads one to believe that the Respawn Entertainment founders have kept true to their roots.

Please check out the 'Trailer' above for a taste of what to expect.

What to Expect!

Here is a list of the sorts of things which you can expect when buying this game:

  • Xbox EXCLUSIVE game- sorry Playstation owners, only available on Xbox (360, One) consoles (and for PC).
  • Multiplayer game-play (only)- campaign mode (online), which is similar to the normal multiplayer online mode, except with cut scenes, to give a back-story for the game.
  • Multiplayer game-play- normal multiplayer mode, with up to 12 players per game, which is 6-v-6, including additional Titans (robots), with additional AI pilot characters to all help players in the game.
  • Multiplayer game-modes- include attrition, last titan standing, hardpoint domination, capture the flag, and pilot hunter.

No.2 - Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare

Playable On: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One

Genre: action, adventure

Release Date: OUT NOW- 28 February, 2014

You've played the app, now its time to play the video game, which before you ask, isn't an arcade game, but in true-fact, a full game, which is a first-person shooter everyone's talking about this year, and with good reason too.

A lot of fun to be had playing this game, but do bare in mind, that in order to play this game, you do need Xbox Live (if you have an Xbox console), however, not to worry Playstation owners, as your online is and already active for FREE.

I personally own this game, so I can vouch for game buyers, that this a game everyone will be addicted to in the first 5 mins of playing. Although after reading a few reviews on Amazon, I heard a lot of people talking about how great it is for kids to play, which I can imagine is is, but remember, its a lot of fun to play if your an adult too.

This is harmless fun, without the blood or gore, with a difference to a lot of other first-person shooters out there, which I'm sure will attract a lot of shooter fans, looking for a game with a difference, like I was, when purchasing the game.

Please check out the 'Trailer' above for a taste of what to expect.

What to Expect!

Here is a list of the sorts of things which you can expect when buying this game:

  • Xbox owners only- Xbox Live required to play, not included with game.

No.1 - Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Playable On: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One

Genre: action, adventure, shooter (first-person)

Release Date: PENDING RELEASE- 3 November, 2014

As a Call of Duty fan of both Infinity Ward and Treyarch, who take it in turns each year, to develop the next, annually produced Call of Duty (AKA C.O.D.) game, I am anticipating this years C.O.D. game, which has been developed by Sledgehammer (co-developers of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3).

So, C.O.D.: Advanced Warfare seems to be a real pack-a-punch, heavy, shoot-em-up, type of first person shooter, as one might expect from a C.O.D. game. What's different about this Call of Duty title, which differs from that of its predecessors? Well, for starters, its been developed by Sledgehammer Games who have never before developed a Call of Duty game alone, which should make this game interesting.

Advanced Warfare brings a new era of combat, set in the future, where combat has changed dramatically, and by the looks of the game-play footage we have seen, it looks rather a lot like the game-play in the Modern Warfare franchise.

Set for release on 3rd November, 2014, we are certainly going to see the game-of-the-year, which will usher in a whole new feel to playing a Call of Duty game, like never before, on the next gen consoles.

Excited yet!

Not played Call of Duty before? Then not to fear, as there are plenty of great C.O.D. games which have been released in previous years, for you to buy now, like the Modern Warfare franchise (1,2 and 3), Black Ops franchise (1 and 2), and Ghosts (solo), which will give you a taste of the C.O.D. experience to see if this is likely to be a game for you, this year.

Please check out the 'Trailer' above for a taste of what to expect.

What to Expect!

Here is a list of the sorts of things which you can expect when buying this game:

  • All new multiplayer experience, allowing you to play alongside friends, and other people from around the world, to complete tasks, in different game modes, including team death-match, death-match, capture the flag, and plenty of other modes.
  • An advanced soldier- Exoskeletons, which evolve every soldier's combat readiness, making soldier's lethal on the battlefield, allowing players to use such abilities as enhanced movement, boost jumps, cloaking abilities, and bio-mechanics that provide strengths, awareness, endurance, and speed.
  • An advanced arsenal- A whole new arsenal and ability set, which uses next- gen consoles, which equips players with all new equipment, perks, technology, and vehicles like hover-bikes and drones. Players freedom is exactly what the new C.O.D. allows, bringing players the best online experience possible.
  • A well-planned, well-executed single player campaign with the voice of Academy Award winning actor Kevin Spacey who stars as Jonathan Irons- powerful man- shaping the future of war.

OMG! Really!!!

2014 has already seen a whole bunch of great releases on next-gen games consoles, which have tested the new consoles abilities.

That's great, isn't it? Well, sure.

But the problem we are facing, is something no-one can do a thing about... as we lay in wait for some of the most anticipated games titles which were supposedly set for release in 2014, but have not yet come to light with release dates.

Here is a list of the TBA games, which could not be added to the list as they have not been given any official release dates as of yet, which may mean, they are set for release in 2015. I now present the games (in no specific order):

  • Halo 5: Guardians
  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Tom Clancy's The Division
  • Battlefield Hardline
  • Resident Evil Revelations 2
  • Star Wars: Battlefront (remake)

Some may be disappointed that these games were not in the list, but sadly, their release date at this time remains unknown.

Summary...

These are the by far the best video-games which have, and are soon to be released this year. As the first complete year with the next-gen consoles out on the market, this has been, and still is, a special year for gamers, and more importantly gaming.

Getting that perfect game this year, has hopefully, just been made that bit easier, with the advantage of having next-gen consoles to play them on, which enhances the experience, and has helped begin a new era for gaming.

If there are any video-games which have, or are, to be released this year, which you believe should have been on this list, then please, do not hesitate to mention them in the comments section below. Any thoughts which you may have, or questions, again, please them in the comments box below.

Thank-you for reading, and happy gaming to all!
